The Wildcat Week Ahead
October 16 - 20
Welcome to A New Week!
Hey Wildcats!
Happy Sunday, Wildcats! Yesterday, GIS and the GIS PTA held our first golf tournament to raise money for our book vending machine at Alburgh Golf Links. It was a fantastic success, and we will be hosting another tournament again, likely next fall. Thank you to our local businesses, DonnaSue Bakes, Robinson Hardware, Alburgh Golf Links, and Kraemer and Kin, for their donations, time, and energy supporting this event. And congratulations to the Island Boys, Jeff Martin, Mike Gove, Jim O'Neil, and Charlie Farrell, for winning 1st place!
This week, we start our new schedule. Providing robust support to students who demonstrate literacy, math, or social-emotional learning needs is essential to their success. Students will notice little difference; they will still have all of their Unified Arts, but when those Unified Arts happen, it might be changing. Teachers have worked to prepare kids, and we look forward to supporting more kids with their academic and SEL needs.
As always, thanks for all you do, and my door and inbox are always open,
Mrs. H

Halloween
Halloween is a few short weeks away. Kids are welcome to wear their costumes to school, but they may not bring:
- Fake weapons.
- Wear a mask, except for our Halloween parade.
- Have any amount of gore or blood as part of their costume.
- Expensive costume parts. We don't want anything to happen to costumes.
Kiddos should also be prepared to still attend PE, if they have it, and recess. Please pack a change of clothes if it's necessary.
Beanstack
GIS has a goal of reading 500,000 minutes this year!
You can access your kiddo's account by searching for Grand Isle on the Beanstack website or by using their Clever login. If you need help with that, please let me know.
Take Home Math and Literacy Games
We're starting to put together some math and literacy games for families to take home. These games will come in a pouch that you take which has an inventory list, instructions, and the game. You will be able to sign the games in and out in the front lobby. My hope is to have this up and running by November 1st!
Grand Isle Family Book Club
If you're interested in a GIS book club, fill out the form! K-3 families and 4-6 families will be provided age-appropriate books to read. Read the books and then come to our book club for an activity!
Please sign up before 10/20 so I can order your books.
Understanding Your Child's Educational Goals
Foundational Reading Skill #2 for K-3 Students
Skill #2: Teach students to decode words, analyze word parts, and write and recognize words.
Once students know a few consonants and vowels, they can begin to apply their letter– sound knowledge to decode and read words in isolation or in connected text. Students also need to learn how to break down and read complex words by segmenting the words into pronounceable word parts.
Teach students how to read a word systematically from left to right by combining each successive letter or combination of letters into one sound. This is called blending. Start with simple consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words that are familiar to students. (hat, cat, bed, etc.)
See an example below.
