Principal's Message
Hello Sabre Families,
We hope everyone has had a good start to the month of February and a chance to enjoy the amazing weather.
This month of February, the month of kindness, I wanted to highlight Sal as a community school, one that in the very nature of its name welcomes resident students of EIPS and, as well, a school that gives back to its community.
We have several programs both curricular and co-curricular that are giving back to the community. The first highlighted one is our circular food economy with the Culinary Arts program led by Miranda Higuchi and students. Miranda, a Red Seal Chef, has a working partnership with the Strathcona Food Bank. Essentially, the food bank brings food into Salisbury that they would not otherwise be able to easily use such as large cuts of meat, large melons and over ripe bananas. Then, the students utilize this food to make meals that are then turned back over to the food bank for distribution.
Another relevant program is the Environmental Studies class spearheaded by Andrew Harrison. This class takes on many environmental causes such as a school wide electronic waste and used battery collection and collecting gently used shoes for charity on Earth Day. As well, they grow the most amazing tomatoes for summer planting.
Linking Generations is a program that our leadership students participate in on a regular basis. Each week, students visit seniors at Sherwood Care Centre and participate in activities and great conversation enriching both student and senior lives.
For the past 2 years, Salisbury has joined with staff from the Stollery Children's Hospital, Strathcona Fire and Rescue, Canadian Heart & Stroke and the Stollery Hospital Foundation to provide students in Grade 10 with CPR training. Doctors, nurses and paramedics present to Physical Education 10 classes about the importance of CPR and AED use and have students move through scenarios where this knowledge is applicable. With this knowledge and experience, students have the understanding of what to do in a real world emergency.
Congratulations to Brock Doerksen and the Sal Robotics Team and Facey’s CyberFlex team, who teamed up as an alliance, and won the FTC Regional Championships and are on their way to provincials in March in Red Deer. It’s a multi level competition where students compete with their robots to complete certain tasks in a limited time with hopefully few penalties.
The season of play for basketball is almost coming to an end. Both junior teams were in Red Deer this weekend and both senior teams will be in Lethbridge on Family Day weekend. Many thanks to our volunteer coaches, players and supportive parents/caregivers for your fair play on and off the hardwoods. It is a long season and the nature of the game can make for elevated emotions, so your level headedness is appreciated.
This week brings us to Open House on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. for prospective students. We are very excited to showcase our school, amazing programming and staff. Come on out and enjoy the food, the energy, the students and the 50 years of grad composites. With your support, Salisbury has become a real school of choice that students and families are proud to be a part of.
Assurance Review
Each year, Alberta Education surveys parents/guardians as important stakeholders in their child's education. At Salisbury, it is parents/caregivers of students in grade 10. You may receive communication about the survey through the mail delivered by Canada Post. Inside is a parent notification letter, instructions and a random-access code to activate the online survey. The surveys are anonymous, and we appreciate the feedback that we receive from our stakeholders. This feedback helps to guide programming and educational decisions made at Salisbury and we have included the link below for your convenience. CLICK HERE to access the survey.
Graduation
There will be an additional day of Grad Photo sessions at Salisbury on March 1, 2024. The bookings will be opened February 1, 2024. To book, please CLICK HERE to access the booking page. You will not need to enter the booking ID, but enter in (Sherwood Park), and (Alberta), then select Salisbury. Bookings time will pop up once you have entered your student's name.
Our Entripy site for Grad Wear is having some technical and supply chain issues. When we have more information regarding ordering your grad wear, we will communicate this with you.
In closing, we hope you have a good Valentine’s Day on Wednesday and a good Family Day weekend.
Have a great week everyone, and please reach out if you have any questions.
