Hello North Rockland Families,

Nothing could slow the Red Raiders down this week! Although it was a short week, our students and staff still accomplished so much.

I'm happy to say that our school's are all buzzing with constant learning, exploration and discovery. Part of the reason this year has been so successful is that we all are treating each other with empathy, care, compassion and respect. Reflecting on that sense of community and how much we have relied on one another during this pandemic has really brought our students and staff so much closer.

The District was proud to hold our special Veteran's day ceremonies, events, and lessons. All our Fieldstone Middle School students successfully launched their rockets and our modified football team there closed out their season undefeated with six straight shutouts. Dedicated learners at West Haverstraw Elementary volunteered, they cleaned up the Greenway in Haverstraw and collected thousands of plastic bottles to be recycled. Our drama, orchestra and band have all been relentlessly practicing and gearing up for tonight and tomorrows' performances of "All Together Now." It's quite an exciting time in North Rockland.

As of now, the District has begun planning for our end of the year traditions and celebrations. We want everyone to be able to not only participate in these events, but to enjoy them and feel a sense of normalcy. I remain optimistic that although events may not be the same in structure, they will be close to what we are used to this past year. So please stay tuned more information will be coming.

As always the health and safety of students and staff is and remains our top priority. Even with positivity rates falling from where they were at this time last year, we are not letting our guard down. As we approach the winter season, we truly appreciate your patience and understanding given the unique circumstances we are facing. Wearing a mask, hand washing, making good decisions and keeping children home if they may be sick or have been exposed is essential, crucial and vital to the continued success of in person instruction.

All Together Now - A Musical Revue

The North Rockland High School Drama Society is proud to present the global event, All Together Now, a revue of songs from hit Broadway musicals.

Ticket prices will be $15 for adults, $12 for students and senior citizens. Performances will be on Friday November 12th and Saturday November 13th at 7 PM. Each performance will run approximately 80 minutes. Tickets can be pre-ordered at nrhsdra-ma.booktix.com or in-person upon arrival on the show dates.

In an effort to accommodate parents and limit capacity in our schools, NRCSD is hosting Hybrid Parent Teacher Conferences. While we know face-to-face conversations are a better option for some parents, we also understand the convenience of a virtual conference is more desirable for some families. Parents will be able to choose how they want to schedule their P/T conferences either in person, via Google Meet, or through a phone conference. This will serve to offer parents the option that works best for them while also reducing the number of visitors in our buildings for this event.

Begin the ignition sequence! 3.. 2.. 1.. BLAST OFF!

Taking “one small step for man, and one giant leap for man kind” is how 7th graders in Mark Milisci's class at Fieldstone Middle School spent their day. Students set up the softball fields as their official site to launch their rockets NRStrong!

NRTogether learners closely examined each model rocket's three flight phases: powered flight, coasting flight, and recovery. Completing a full aviation cycle tests out the air craft's design, construction, launching, and operation.

After setting the launch angle and factoring in the windy weather students predicted where their rockets would land. For bonus points on their grade and well.. the glory, team members tried to catch the projectiles as properly deployed parachutes slowed their fall back to earth. The day revealed that we've got some future engineers and possibly pro catchers in our mix.

NRCSD's Veterans - This year, with the help of our learners at Thiells Elementary School, we put together this video highlighting the service of Veterans currently working in the District. We are so proud to honor you today and everyday. Thank you! Watch the video here

It takes a special person, with a big heart, to volunteer to bring sunshine into the lives of others. One of the greatest gifts you can give, is your time.

Recently, our North Rockland Board of Education President, Rich Fernandez was recognized and awarded 2021 Outstanding Volunteer during the Rockland Development Council's annual Philanthropy Day.

"We're not going to solve all the problems, but we can always lend a helping hand" explained Rich while excepting the award for all he does, everyday, to help so many in our community.

We are so proud in NRCSD to see Rich be recognized for the incredible and selfless work he does on a daily basis and for the wonderful leader he is. Kudos!

Led by Coaches Jones, LoConti and Mahon, the NRCSD Modified Football team at Fieldstone Middle School closed out their 2021-22 season, UNDEFEATED!

With an impressive record of 6-0 our junior athletes proved the Red Raiders can't be beat. You don't stay undefeated without great defense, in a rare six shutouts the team also completes their season without being scored on by opponents. Congratulate the team here.

The national day of recycling is led by Keep America Beautiful, an organization that makes it their mission for a “country in which every community is a clean, green, and beautiful place to live.” They holiday is a perfect opportunity to look deeply at the impact we have on our environment, recycling habits and find ways to increase our participation in reducing our carbon footprint.

NRCSD has pledged to go green this school year and to recycle more in honor of America Recycles Day coming up. Just take a look at the initiative our dedicated learners are West Haverstraw Elementary have taken on this month!

After volunteering and cleaning up the local Haverstraw Greenway, student's were really inspired to get more involved. They decided to host a school-wide plastic bottle collection contest by grade level! All week learner's have been thoughtfully bringing in bags and bags of plastic bottles to be properly recycled. We learned that recycling just 1 plastic bottle saves enough energy to run a 100-watt bulb for 4 hours, creates 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than would be created when making a new bottle. Recycling plastic also saves twice as much energy as it takes to burn it and it only takes 5 recycled plastic bottles to make enough fiberfill to stuff a ski jacket.

We have already collected over 3,500 plastic bottles during this contest! We also compiled some simple ways that you can join us in our mission and recycle more!

1. Say no or reduce your use of plastic bags.
2. Support restaurants, stores and businesses who are reducing their use of single-use plastics.
3. Set-up recycling bins in your home, workplace or at events.
4. Always chooses reusable, when it come to bags, bottles and packaging.
5. Buy upcycled or recycled products.
6. Donate or recycle your e-waste.
7. Put out corrugated cardboard and paper on recycling pick up days.
8. Try to minimize food waste and recycle during the upcoming holiday season.
9. Donate or recycle clothing and textiles.
10. Get the whole family involved
    

November is traditionally a time to give thanks and give back to the community in North Rockland. We will be posting our school's annual food drives here as they begin. Thank you in advance for you generosity and participation.

On November 2, 2021, following the Food and Drug Administration’s emergency use authorization (EUA) on October 29, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) endorsed the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice’s (ACIP’s) recommendation for children ages 5-11 to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. This is the first authorized vaccine to be permitted for use in this age group. All children ages 5 to 11 are now eligible to receive a two-dose primary series of the pediatric formulation Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, effective immediately. Parents or guardians with questions about the vaccine are encouraged to talk to their child’s pediatrician or another trusted healthcare provider.

The Rockland County Department of Health (RCDOH) is participating in New York State’s #VaxToSchool campaign! Starting October 19th, youth ages 12 to 17 will get a gift card with a first and/or second COVID-19 vaccine at a RCDOH COVID-19 vaccination clinic.

Sun River has informed us that they are providing immunizations, COVID-19 vaccinations, physicals, and child health insurance assistance. ***NRCSD continues to work tirelessly to ensure that all health and safety protocols are working effectively. It is incumbent upon each and every one of us to make sure all safety protocols are followed at all times—in and out of school— so we can mitigate the spread of COVID-19. We must work together in partnership—schools, families, and students—and be mindful of the great responsibility we all have to protect ourselves and those around us. This virus can be present without any symptoms. That fact alone can lead to the unintentional infection of others.
