Chisholm represented her Brooklyn, New York-centered district in the U.S. House of Representatives. Four years later, she became the first Black candidate for a major-party nomination for President of the United States.

- 30 Ways to Say Yay Winner this week, Mr. Alex Curran! Mr. Curran works hard with our large 8th grade class to ensure their success. He builds quality relationships with students, and supports their grades, attendance, and behavior each day through his role. As athletic director, Mr. Curran is highly visible at events, and takes on a hands-on approach to making sure McMillan shines when we host or are at events. Mr. Curran knocked the Marisett invite out of the park this year and last year, and looks to continue to learn and grown to make events at the MAC like this even better! Mr. Curran leads in the classroom as well through his great conversations with staff about coaching, and believes that students at McMillan are STUDENT- Athletes, where student always comes first. Great leadership/work Mr. Curran!

- 30 Ways to Say Yay Winner this week, This past year, Ms. Johnson has a been a mentor to one of our students who needs additional support. She has worked really hard building a relationship with this student and setting high expectations for them. I have seen some awesome growth from this student! I appreciate that Ms. Johnson is always willing to give this student the breaks and extra support they need, and it always helps them get back on track. I can tell that Ms. Johnson cares about this student's success. One time, this student told me that Ms. Johnson was a great teacher because she "respects me like I'm a human being." Thank you for supporting our kiddos who need that extra love and care, Ms. Johnson!

- Mr. Eaves works hard as a security guard in our building on second floor, and has quality relationships with students. He holds himself to high standards of behavior and wants our students to be in class, and learning. As a wrestling coach, Mr. Eaves knows his students both in and out of school, and supports that academic achievement of his students. With good attendance, a perceptive outlook on his role, and one who has a smile on his face, Mr. Eaves will help all feel safe, secure and in place at McMillan. Thank you for all you do Mr. Eaves!

Being safe at McMillan is job one. Do not open any door for any human to get into this building. All adults have keys and cards, and all students must enter and check into the door. Officer Aquazzino does door checks 4 x daily to ensure we are secure. Do your part, and never prop a door open.

- Black History Month continues at McMillan! Recognizing noteable leaders and contributions to our world: 1940: Hattie McDaniel is the first Black actor to win an Oscar.
For her role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind, McDaniel won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1940. Seven decades later, when Mo’Nique accepted the same award for her role in Precious, she paid homage to her predecessor in her speech as well as in her dress: a blue gown with gardenias in her hair, a nod to McDaniel's Oscars attire.
