Black History Month & Beyond
WCCUSD Libraries promote and celebrate diverse books all year long! During Black History Month, books by Black authors and with Black characters take center stage. Check out the great Black History Month & Beyond collection in Sora! Free books, 24/7.
Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers: Read Across America
Celebrate Read Across America this year with fun and engaging read-aloud books from the library. Use the library catalog and library staff to help select books. Even though Read Across America falls on March 2, read-aloud benefit kids of all ages, year-round. Listening to books builds fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Ask your library staff for great recommendations.
Reading Graphic Novels Builds 21st Century Skills
Every librarian knows that kids LOVE graphic novels, but adults worry that students should be reading "real" books or chapter books instead. In the article Why You Should Encourage Your Child's Love of Graphic Novels, the author explains the many benefits of graphic novels. She concludes by saying that the best way for kids to become better readers is to READ--no matter what they are reading! (In fact, graphic novels have a higher percentage of rare or more complex words--53.5%--than other children's books at 31%, and even adult books at 52.7%).
Before the Oscar, our libraries had the book!
Hair Love won the Oscar this year for best animated shorts--but did you know it's also a book? You can find it in several district libraries, as well as your local public library. Share the book and film with students of all ages and backgrounds!
