HERGET HAPPENINGS
February 2022
Principally Speaking...
Greetings!
As we are at the midpoint of the 3rd quarter, we are thankful for all the hard work put in by our students, teachers, staff, and parents/guardians. We encourage all families to use this point in the year to check grades on Home Access Center and remember to save the date as Virtual Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday, February 23 from 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Registration for conferences open February 11 for signup. Communication with teachers is one of the best ways to support your students' growth; if you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out for support. How to Register Here
We urge students to take advantage of the After School Homework Club to complete homework assignments, catch up on any missing work, and get extra academic support. After School Homework Club is a great resource and is open every Tuesday and Thursday one hour after school with Mrs. Devlin and Mrs. Andrews.
Spring picture day for 6th and 7th graders is Tuesday, February 15; 8th Grade formal pictures will also be taken on this day.
We continue to be thankful for parent support! Please continue to join and support our PTA, currently, we have 41 staff members and 43 parents.
GO Huskies!
Ms. Larry,
Principal
Black History continues to be celebrated to honor the achievements and hardships of historical and contemporary Black Americans.
Lonnie Bunch, Founding Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, said, “Black History reserves the memory of the past as well as the culture of an entire group of people. Moreover, it empowers members of that culture to retain their traditions while continuing to make a positive difference in the world.”
The 2022 Black History Month's theme is Black Health and Wellness. This focus will celebrate the contributions and breakthroughs of Black professionals as well as speak to the cultural richness of those “non-traditional” health and wellness practitioners.
Lunar New Year-February 1, 2022: Year of the Tiger 🐅
Thank You A+ Foundation!
For the second year in a row, we would like to thank our friends at The A+ Foundation for gifting us one dollar per student to be used to support our school this year with any programs or special events.
The A+ Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that supports and assists alumni and raises money to enhance the opportunities of the students and staff of School District 129. The goals of the A+ Foundation are to enrich the curriculum of West Aurora School District 129, inspire excellence in students and staff, expand opportunities for community involvement, and foster alumni connections.
The A+ Foundation works hard all year to raise funds and put these dollars to work in our schools. Along with their commitment to AP, Hall of Honor, Excellence in Education, and our Fund-A-Need grants, this program is another way to support the great things we do in West Aurora.
TEACHING & LEARNING
February - the shortest month that seems to be packed with so many things!
This month, we continue our focus to make a Commitment to Dialogue. But, as we look at the indicators in the district commitment, we, as a building, will really focus on the highlighted indicator and think about what our instructional intention is for the lesson, unit, activity and how we can best plan out “deliberate opportunities of planned dialogue.” To do that, Teaching and Learning will focus on how we plan and initiate questions and responses to further our student understanding.
Commitment to Dialogue (Exploratory Talk)
Exploratory dialogue underpins collaboration between all learners. Talk is exploratory rather than cumulative or disputational
High-quality dialogue enables students to generate ideas and think more deeply
Everyone experiences deliberate opportunities of planned dialogue leading to meaningful learning
The learning environment and culture of each classroom enable students to take risks in their thinking and dialogue.
This month, Herget Celebrates Black History! During this month, we will celebrate, acknowledge and highlight the achievements, works, and contributions of Black Americans. Students will see and hear about individuals and events through announcements, posters throughout the building, conversations they may have in class, and through Schoology posts.
Just as January’s newsletter explained, February continues a few things that started during that month, for example…

8th Graders Meet With West Aurora High School Counselors
SCIENCE
6th GRADE
Sixth graders are finishing up their study of the Structure and Function of Organisms where they are learning all about cells and how they come together to form organisms. Students are also exploring the characteristics of all living things! Next, students will be exploring The History of Planet Earth.
7th GRADE
In the month of February, 7th graders will learn how sound and light waves travel. To begin the unit, students will learn the difference between a transverse wave and a longitudinal wave. They will also understand the difference between frequency and amplitude. Students will model the various waves in class with materials and create drawings.
8th GRADE
For the month of February eighth grade science, students will continue their exploration into genetics and inheritance of traits. They will use Punnett squares to determine the probability offspring will inherit certain traits. Students will also explore asexual and sexual reproduction and they will get a chance to watch a planarian regeneration through asexual reproduction.
SOCIAL STUDIES
February. Ahhh, the season of love! Love is in the air this February and there certainly is not a shortage of it here at Herget. This month the Social Studies teachers wanted to share with you what we LOVE the most about teaching Social Studies. Mrs. Curgino and Mrs. Olsen love having students back in the classroom full time this year. Students are able to explore past and present events through the use of technology and in-person conversations! Watching students make connections between cultures and traditions, both past and present, is incredible!
Seventh-grade students are wrapping up their studies in developed and developing countries. They have analyzed data and examined standards of living in various countries throughout the world. In addition, they have worked on problem-solving current issues that would help people around the world raise their standard of living. For the remainder of the third quarter, we will bring a novel study to our classes while we focus on conflict and how conflict affects all parties involved. Our class novel Refugee focuses on the ideas of survival and courage as told by the narrator.
Eighth-grade teachers love that the kids at Herget Middle School are AMAZING! The eighth-grade teachers also love that “there is always something interesting going on in the world!” Worldly events make for numerous teachable moments! 8th-grade students have been focusing on the causes of the Civil War and how the war impacted American society and government.
As you can see, it doesn’t matter the grade level or the content, Social Studies teachers at Herget LOVE what they do each and every day!
PHYSICAL EDUCATION/HEALTH
The PE Department will start Fitness Testing at the end of January and the beginning of February. The data collected will move with the students as they progress to West Aurora High School. This will provide the students with valuable information as they continue their fitness journey not only through school but in life.
Please remind your student, as will we, that these fitness tests are just a starting point and not to get discouraged at their results. This is a big puzzle we are putting together and this is a starting point. By collecting data now in middle school, we will help the students improve in all areas of fitness and provide them with the skills they need to continue on this journey. Health class will also provide valuable information also. Please contact your student's PE teacher if you have any questions or concerns. JCullison@sd129.org, CThornton@sd129.org, JWindle@sd129.org, and LEastlick@sd129.org.
ATHLETICS
The girls' basketball and dance team season is underway! You can check out the schedule for the girls' basketball teams at the 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade level at https://il.8to18.com/herget/home. Our amazing dance team performs at halftime of the first home game played at 7th and 8th-grade girls basketball games. The 7th and 8th grade basketball season will finish with the City of Lights tournament against all the other Aurora schools.
Spring sports information will be released sometime in the middle of February. Spring sports include 6th/7th/8th-grade boys and girl track and field, 7th/8th girls soccer, and 7th/8th boys volleyball. Spring sports will start the week of March 14th. This information will be released on Schoology on the athletic website. You must be registered online at https://il.8to18.com/herget/home and have an up-to-date sports physical on file in order to participate in spring sports.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
This quarter we as the 7th grade ELA department will be focusing on Argumentative writing and research. The students will be formulating and writing arguments based on researched-based articles. With every argument there are always two sides to every story, the students will have to choose a side and defend that side.
The students will learn the importance of a good hook, to grab the reader’s attention, as well as figuring out what information is important and crucial to developing a well-written argument following the CER strategy. The students will also be learning about the importance of telling both sides of the story by including a counterclaim and how to rebut that claim with a strongly worded rebuttal based on evidence and facts. The art or Argumentative writing is an important skill that helps develop young minds to be fact-based thinkers and confident debaters.
Also, this month we are infusing African American accomplishments, advancements, and the struggles that the African American people have endured and that are still very present today. Change is key and eminent to the advancement of us as a country and as a people, education is the starting point to that change. So, we will be incorporating studying poetry, speeches, and music that were instrumental in leading our country towards change. We also will be looking forward to the next quarters' topics of poetry, drama, and our final novel study for the year.
HEALTH OFFICE
Herget Huskies continue to promote healthy lifestyles. Masks continue to be worn, keeping a safe distance of 3ft-6ft from others is encouraged and frequent handwashing and good hygiene are advised. A healthy mind and body are needed for productive learning. We have been documenting COVID vaccines as submitted. I want to remind families to talk to their doctor regarding personal concerns. This link has some good information regarding COVID Vaccines available in Kane County. COVID-Vaccine
Students are encouraged to describe their symptoms clearly and explain their needs. We talk about “letting your doctor know” when necessary. This is an important skill for our middle schoolers to begin to learn. A brief break, temp check, and back to class from the health office can result in a five-day stay home period. Please know that we continue to follow IDPH and Kane County guidelines. Thank you for helping us keep your students safe by keeping students who feel ill home.
Regarding doctor visits, health office staff are preparing letters to be mailed home with individualized notices for all eighth-grade students. All eighth-graders are required to have a complete physical exam prior to ninth-grade entry. This is an early reminder to make those appointments. Please take these notices with you when taking your student for his/her ninth-grade physical exam. Students at all levels are excited to prepare for sports participation. Remember that a valid school physical exam can be used for sports for one year from the date of the exam. Please do not hesitate to call the health office with questions.
On a personal level as your school nurse, I can report that I have chosen to receive the COVID vaccine and on November 7th I received the booster dose. I can share that it is peace of mind for me to have this vaccine protection.
Take care,
Elizabeth Silva RN-CSN (630.301.5243)
LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER
Blind Date With A Book is officially underway! Starting February 1st we’d like to “fix you up” with a blind date- a book of course. After all, we ARE a library. Will your “date” be fiction or nonfiction? Will it be funny or informative? Maybe a mystery or a true crime? With each book is a “Rate-a-Date” slip. Simply say whatever you want about your date. You won’t hurt our feelings or the books. Return the “Rate-a-Date” slip to the library front desk and choose a treat from our candy jar! Happy dating!
Mark your calendars! Our Spring Book Fair will be here before you know it!! It is scheduled for March 7- March 18. Students are able to make purchases at any time throughout the course of the fair. Scholastic accepts cash, check, and credit cards. This book fair is a huge fundraiser for the LMC. It is the primary reason we have so many new books in students’ hands. I am so proud of the reading climate our students have created at Herget.
Battle of the Books for students and staff is just around the corner. Make sure to have your books read by the beginning of April! Let the best team win!
Reading Support
Support Writing at Home
Over the last decade, research has shown that reading and writing are more interconnected than we ever thought. As we read more and more, we gain a better understanding of text structures and language, and that knowledge can be transferred into our own writing. As we write more and more, we gain a better understanding of the writing process, and that knowledge can be used to improve our analysis of other authors’ writing.
Supporting a student’s reading habits at home doesn’t require much more than providing a quiet space, time, and some fantastic books to get lost in. Many parents, however, find supporting their students’ writing habits a bit more intimidating. Here are a number of fun and meaningful ways we can support our students’ writing development at home:
Create a family journal where BOTH you and your student can record your shared and individual memories (your student treasures your words more than you probably know)
Write letters or group emails to your extended family or friends with updates on your lives or questions about theirs
Assist your student in writing thank-you letters when they receive a gift or help from someone
Write a poem or limerick for your student once a week/two weeks/month and challenge them to write their own in response
Begin a personal diary, have your student do the same, and set aside at least 5-10 minutes in your night to record your thoughts or feelings from the day (be careful not to violate the privacy of each other’s personal musings or you may risk losing interest in the practice)
Write an online review together of a product you purchased, a movie you watched, a recipe you tried, a restaurant you ate at, etc.
If your student asks you to buy something for them or for permission to attend an event, have them write a proposal as to why it’s important to them or what they can gain from it
Write competing stories based on a photograph or your favorite work of art
It is important that our students not only see themselves as writers but also that they see us as writers too. Practice, practice, practice, and remember to have some fun!
ELECTIVES
In honor of Valentine’s Day Herget’s elective teachers would like to share what they LOVE ❤️️ about their content area?
- Señora Medeles loves to share the culture of the Spanish speaking world with her students in addition to the usefulness of Spanish in everyday lives.
- Madame Washer I love the diversity of the Francophone world. I love to discover new French singers and music.
- Dr. Glogowski loves to hear and see choir and ukulele students enjoy performing music together.
- Mrs. Metallo loves to watch confidence grow as CTE students learn how to use tools and equipment they’ve never used before.
- Ms. Buettner and Mrs. Hunt love watching band students experience success as they learn to perform increasingly challenging music as the year progresses.
- Mr. Skly loves watching all of the lovely students develop a love for ART!
MATH
Math classes have been hard at work as we continue making our way through our respective course curriculums. We love seeing the students' efforts pay off and are amazed by the growth and progress of all of our students. We continue to emphasize the importance of attendance and hard work in order to become the best version of ourselves. We can all be great math students - we just have to persevere.
As parents or guardians you might have your children coming to you seeking guidance on different assignments from math class. When this happens, do you find yourself unable to help your child and do you find yourself thinking, “What do I tell my child when I don’t remember ever seeing this type of mathematics when I was a student?” or “I was never good at math, how can I possibly help my child?” If so, here are a few helpful tips, taken from this NCTM blog written by NCTM President J. Michael Shaughnessy, that might make the next time you sit down to work with your child more successful:
Work together as a team with your child. It is important to ask your child to share what they know and to explain how they are thinking about the question. This approach might help you as the parent remember a strategy but it might also get your child realizing they know more than they thought they did!
Be creative in finding resources that will help you - you can Google a topic, you can browse the NCTM website for helpful resources, or you can watch helpful videos you find on YouTube.
Remember everyone can be good at math! There is no math gene, no one was born being bad at math...it just takes perseverance and a positive attitude!
Be positive! Thank your child for taking the time to ask for help and encourage them to keep working hard and seeking help when they need it.
Additionally, on nights when your child doesn’t have homework or finish their homework early, practicing basic facts is always beneficial. Integer operations and multiplication/division facts are always excellent topics to practice no matter what grade your child is in. Here are a few websites that are quick resources for practicing these skills:
Here is a Valentine’s Day Challenge for you to try with your child - have fun!!
