Trident Leads
Term 2 Week 9 - 1st July 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
This week has been a hive of activity at Trident.
First of all, our Year Ten students took part in the Literacy Reading and Numeracy NCEA pilots on Tuesday and Wednesday. Their first digital assessment and attempt at NCEA, this was a significant event and one which took a lot of organisation and commitment from both the staff and students. We were delighted by our students’ response to this assessment; they were organised, self-disciplined and committed to the effort involved in taking both assessments. We are so proud of the attitude they demonstrated, that we are shouting them a pizza lunch next week!
Our staff too were amazing! Particular thanks are due to our literacy and numeracy leaders - Sarah Shaw and Steve Williamson,IT Coordinator - Shane Nychy, HODs of Mathematics and English - Tracey Webster and Nicola Bowe, DPs for curriculum- Ginny Bellamy and Caroline Reddish and the Principal's Nominee - Gary Walters. There were also so many other teachers who supported the effort through managing relief classes and being IT supervisors through the pilot. It is great for the school to have had the opportunity to see what Numeracy and Literacy will require under the new NCEA framework, and this experience can feed directly into our planning and teaching in our current junior classes.
Today we had the honour of welcoming Kiri Allan, our local MP to Trident. She came at the invitation of Kim Wilson, to talk to our Year 10 Whakapiki Ake Social Studies class about co-governance between Maori and the Crown. She was a lively and hugely knowledgeable speaker and despite the complex nature of the topic and its history, taught all those present - both students and staff - with clarity and optimism. We look forward to her next visit when we hope that she can meet with a greater number of students and staff.
This week on Wednesday Mike King came to Trident to present on Youth Mental Health to our Year Eleven cohort. Before his presentation he met with our guidance team, Paul Barr, Angela Barr and Molly Florence, to gain understanding of how we support our students here at Trident in their mental health needs. His key message from the event was the importance of helping friends in need to access help from the counsellors and others with the experience and skills to support them.
It is always interesting to welcome people to the school who come to share information and new knowledge and we are proud of our Trident students in that they are able to think critically and evaluate the information they receive. I am sure there will be some lively conversations this weekend with whanau for those students who were able to take part in all of the events described above.
Finally, a word of thanks to our Science Teacher, Erin Nolan. You know from your own students’ experiences at Trident how hard our teachers work, but this week has been particularly lively for Erin who took a group of Year Twelves to Hamilton to compete in Chemquest on Tuesday, then the EPRO-8 Team over to Hamilton for the semi-finals of the competition on Thursday and on Friday joined a national panel of Science teachers writing one of the new Science standards for NCEA. Erin is an example of a Trident teacher - committed, knowledgeable and focused on improving the opportunities for our students. We are lucky to have them all.
Have a relaxing weekend with whānau.
Ngā mihi nui,
Adrienne Scott-Jones

THE RONGOHIA TE HAU SURVEY
At Trident we want our school to reflect the identities, values, and priorities of our community through our teaching and learning programmes, sport, arts and culture, and leadership opportunities for students.
In order to achieve this, we have been working as a staff with Poutama Pounamu, a PLD organisation, which is supporting us in developing our teaching practice through their expertise in Culturally Responsive and Relational Pedagogies.
We are asking our whānau to take part in a short survey to gather your voice so that we can drive transformative change for our learners through Rongohia te Hau.
Rongohia te Hau, ‘Listening to the winds of change’, is a way of using evidence including survey responses from students, whānau and teachers, and observations of teaching, to inform and develop culturally responsive teaching and leadership across the curriculum.
Please share your experience of Trident as whānau, by completing this anonymous survey - Trident whānau survey 2022
Click here: https://waikato.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0IgSBckoryRFHRs to support us to provide your students with the best learning experience for their success.
Thank you to Mrs Reddish for her korero about why it is important we hear our Trident whanau voice. Please watch the video below
NCEA PILOT ASSESSMENTS
Congratulations to all our Year 10s who took part in the NCEA pilots this week. They showed excellent self-management and organisational skills - they arrived with charged chrome books and ready to work.
Well done for their mahi and focus.
PHYSICS TRIP
On the 20th of June Mr Wenzel and Mrs Shaw took a group of year 12 and 13 Physics students to Rainbows End. While there the students enjoyed a myriad of activities related to the concepts of Kinematics, Forces, and Energy.
The students experienced multiple G forces as they braved STRATOSFEAR, and POWERSURGE as well as Weightlessness as they plummeted from FEARFALL, to just name a few.
What a great experience for our students! Thank you to Mr Wenzel and Mrs Shaw for their planning of this trip.
BOYS' RUGBY REPORTS
Trident Boys' 1st XV v Te Taumata
The 1st XV went down 22-17 in a spirited game.
Down 14-0 at half time the boys showed amazing courage to fight back with tries to Mason Raynes-Turnball, Epa Ruawai and Rihari Biddle making the score 19-17.
Trident had lots of opportunities in the last minutes but just couldn’t cross the line. Te Taumata landed a last min penalty.
Coaches were really proud of the performance with stand out efforts from: Zion Wipaki, Kepariki Bruce, Zavier de Vries, Jack Clark, Mason Raynes-Turnball and Maxwell Wharewera.
U16 Trident Boys' v Whakatane High School
“A tough 38-38 draw for the boys against WHS at Trident. The boys dominated for the majority of the game, played some great rugby, showed their potential and were leading 31-12 with 10 to go before going off the boil and letting WHS come back to finish by drawing the game 38-38 on full time. Tough result, with some of the boys playing while sick, some real lessons to be learnt and implemented and potentially tough calls, but proud of the boys.”
EASTERN BAY REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY
Congratulations to our rugby players who have been selected from a larger training squad for the Eastern Bay U18 Boys’ rugby team.
These boys have been training since the 11th of May every Wednesday night at rugby park for a minimum of two hours.
They will be competing in the 2022 Youth Development Cup which is being held in Whakatane on the 21st and 22nd of July at Rugby Park. This is a premier representative rugby tournament for youth boys and girls of the Bay of Plenty region.
Participating in the tournament will be the U16 and U18 Boys’ teams from our three sub unions, Western Bay, Central Bay and Eastern Bay, as well as the Thames Valley U16 Boys', U18 Girls' and U18 Boys' teams and a Waikato Tainui Under 16 Girls' team.
Congratulations to the following Trident students who made the U18 Boys' team;
Epa Ruawai
Ethan Forbes (VC)
Ezrah Collins
Jhai Ngaheu
Kepa Bryce (VC)
Malachi Kurei
Maxwell Wharewera
Zavier de Vries
Zion McLarin (C)
GIRLS' U16 RUGBY REPORT
“A good game saw Trident take the win! 35-20
The second half saw some explosive breaks from Molly Byford and Reve Ngaheu with both players scoring in the game. Good distribution of the ball from both sides with Trident scoring from the wing in the last few minutes. There was a decent number of tackles and turnovers with both sides evenly paced. Limited penalties in the game highlighted discipline at the ruck, and good ball skills allowed the game to flow. Great to see so many new players having a go! Afterwards Tarawera High put on a hangi for the Trident players and whānau.”
RIKKI FITZGERALD - CAPTAIN 1ST XI GIRLS FOOTBALL
Rikki Fitzgerald was born and bred in Opotiki and is of Whakatohea descent.
Rikki plays centre back/defender in the Trident team that she captains. She has played football since she was 8 years old and enjoys it because it keeps her fit and she gets to play alongside friends.
Rikki has been in the 1st XI since she was a Year 9 and has also done well in other sports. She has made various BOP Rugby teams in both 7s and 15 a side and was a member of the Mount Marlins Women's club team that won the Baywide Premiership last year. Rikki has also played Rugby League and Basketball and was the Trident Junior Swim Champion as a Year 9.
Rikki’s achievements and leadership skills extend outside of sports as well. She has achieved Academic Excellence in Level 2 and is a School Prefect.
Rikki’s advice to Year 9 students is to “give everything a go and don’t be shy to put yourself out there”.
Interesting facts about Rikki “I have never dyed my hair and never moved houses in my life. I have 4 siblings, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. I have never been to the South Island.”

SCHOOLDOCS
Our school has been working with SchoolDocs to create a website for our policies and procedures. We are excited to announce that the site is now live and available to our school community.
The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies, which have been well researched and follow the Ministry of Education National Administration Guidelines. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc.
SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. Our board of trustees has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on them before they are implemented. We will advise you when policies are up for review and how you can take part in the review.
We invite you to visit the site at https://trident.schooldocs.co.nz (note that there's no "www."). Our username is "trident" and password "courage".
