What is Your WHY?

It seems like a simple question, but in reality it can be difficult to answer. We are often asked WHAT we do - I'm a teacher, coach, counselor, assistant, child nutrition specialist, nurse, custodian, police officer, receptionist, clerk, administrator, etc. To actually articulate WHY we do what we do and where our passion comes from, that takes more time to respond. But it's so important to know your WHY and your PURPOSE. You may achieve success without purpose but you will struggle to achieve significance. I want every staff member to feel SIGNIFICANT.... because you are!


Here are some of our WHYS:

"To help students overcome barriers and succeed inside and outside the classroom."

"To help ALL students know they are valuable, deserve to be heard, heave my support and have the power to do great things. I believe strongly in hope and instilling that in students in good times and rough."

"To try to make a difference, no matter how small, in the lives of kids who don't think anything can be different."

"I want to show students that it's okay to be a nerd. I want to help students embrace challenges and difficult tasks instead of shying away from them. And I want to be a source of peace, hope, and joy in a world that could use more of those things."


I challenge each and every one of you to remember your WHY every day. Write it down so you can see it daily. Read it out loud so you hear it daily. Thank You To:

  • Charity Vash, Jennifer Gaw & all of our custodial crew for working this summer to clean the building and make sure it was ready for staff and students to return.
  • Bret Bass for addressing all building needs and finally working with facilities to get the air conditioning working throughout the building.
  • James Thorpe for taking care of the building and grounds so everyone in the community can be proud of Southport High School. Your dedication and hard work are very much appreciated.

Amy Peddie and our EL tutor/translators shared important information with our staff about how to best support our EL students in the classroom.

Our school nurses built connections with staff members, shared how they run the clinic, reviewed the health plan process, and ways staff can support in medical situations.

The main office staff explained the sub process, roles of the treasurer's office, what is available in the bookstore, and that you should really just ask Mrs. Tasker if you need anything.

Nicky Givens & Nick Stevens

The Athletic department shared information about what students need in order to participate in athletics and what sports are offerred at SHS. They encouraged staff to support our student athletes by using their badge to get into events for free!

Renee Buckel, Patrick Clark, Julie Fierce, Lamont Rascoe, Ngun Sung, Annie Thomas, Briana Unerwood & Christy Vance

The SHS School Counselors and Social Worker shared the ways in which they support the students and staff. They explained that they help students academically, socially, emotionally, and ensure they are planning for life after high school.

Jennifer Karushis & Janet Mitchell

Jennifer and Janet shared general informaiton about IEPs and where teachers can obtain more informaiton. They explained the services provided to students and Janet shared specific strategies for our DHH students and interpreters.

Mary Arnold & Shelly Smith

Mary and Shelly shared resources that are available in the LMC (Library Media Center). The explained how teachers and students can utilize the space and ways they can support them in the classroom.

Julie Conrad, Jake Fritz, Brooke Wingert & Courtney Worley

The SHS instructional coaches shared the department support breakdown and the admin/coach pairs for the 23-24 school year. The also gave everyone a copy of the NIET Teaching and Learning Standards rubric to begin the PD rubric review process.

With two new assistant principals, the Student Services staff shared information about themselves and their philosophy of student discipline. They explained that they are here to support teachers and asked staff to reach out if they need their assistance.

Serving in new positions at SHS this year, Joe and Eric shared their new roles and responsibilities with the staff. They explained that their main goal is to continue to support the staff so they can support the students.

Social Committee & PTSA

Thanks to the Social Committee and PTSA, the SHS administrative team was able to serve ice cream for the staff. The PTSA also provided Southport koozies as a gift for the staff, inspiring them that they "CAN do it"! It was a great time for our staff to connect.

Child Nutrition Staff

Thank you to Lynette Jenkins and the child nurition staff who served our 2,300+ students breakfast and lunch this week as they returned to school. They are short staffed and working hard to provide for our students so we want them to know how much we appreciate all that they do!
