NEWS & UPDATES FROM SM NORTH
Shawnee Mission North Student Council Receives Top National Award
Overland Park, KS April 6, 2023--For its exemplary record of leadership, service and activities that improve the school and community, the Shawnee Mission North student council has been recognized as a 2023 National Gold Council of Excellence by the National Student Council (NatStuCo). The NatStuCo program is supported by its parent organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
This is the second year in a row for North to be recognized, but the first with the gold standard. The reward is built on a portfolio of service, community outreach, reflection, and governance.
“Exceptional student councils are a hallmark of exceptional schools,” said NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe. “The SMN council has taken student leadership to the next level, creating a culture promoting scholarship and citizenship that resonates far beyond their team. I’m delighted to recognize their hard work with the National Gold Council of Excellence Award for their commitment to service, leadership and uplifting the voices of their peers.”
A student council must meet a variety of criteria to earn the National Council of Excellence Award. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings and a democratic election process, the councils must have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community. Learn more about the award here.
The Junior Class Student Council will be having a fundraiser on Tuesday, April 11 from 4-8 p.m. to support the class with expenses for prom. In store please show the flyer when ordering, or say “I’m here for the SMN fundraiser.” If you are ordering online use promo code: GIVEBACK. Thank you for supporting the Class of 2024!
On Friday, May 5, Shawnee Mission North will host North Relays Track and Field competition which is the premier High School track event in this region. To minimize the impact on instructional time, and alleviate traffic congestion, we are adjusting the schedule for Friday, May 5. We would also like to stress that, as it has been all year, students be picked up in the front circle drive that day. Buses will leave at regular time. The schedule for the day is included below.
L1- 11:40-12:05
L2-12:10- 12:35
L3- 12:40-1:05
Seminar 1:10-2:40
And also switched the order of classes just a bit:
Dear SMSD Families,
We are coming to the end of another successful year in the Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD). This time of year is full of celebration for all that has been accomplished, along with feelings of nostalgia over what will be missed as students and staff move on to what comes next.
I am writing to share the dates for the end of the 2022-23 school year in the Shawnee Mission School District:
- The last day of school for Pre-kindergarten (Pre-K) students will be Monday, May 22, 2023.
- The last day of school for K-11 students will be Tuesday, May 23, 2022 (early dismissal)
We are close to the finish line, but there is still important work to be done. Let’s dig deep and finish the year strong. Thank you for all you do to support the education of your children. Together, we are One Shawnee Mission!
Sincerely,
Dr. Michelle HubbardSuperintendent
SMSD Parents of Junior and Senior Students,
As we connect students to Real World Learning experiences, we have an upcoming opportunity for students to directly explore work experiences in businesses throughout our community.
We are hosting a Career Expo. The event will be Thursday, April 13 at the Shawnee Mission School District Center for Academic Achievement at 8200 W. 71st Street, Overland Park, KS 66204.
- A session will be held for graduating seniors from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. This will be for members of the Class of 2023 who are looking for work opportunities following high school.
- A session for current juniors will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. This will be for juniors looking for internship opportunities in the fall of 2023.
Buses will be available at each high school, or students may drive from their home high school. Students have received information on this event and may sign-up using the link below. Students must use their district laptop and student email to access the sign-up link.
Student Sign-up LINK (no parental access)
Some of the more than 50 participating companies include HCA Healthcare, Honeywell, Garmin, and Quest Diagnostics.
We recommend students wear business casual attire (slacks, collared shirts, skirts, dresses) and bring a resume if they have one, although this is not required for participation.
Through internships, students have the opportunity to earn a Market-Value Asset (MVA). This is a part of Shawnee Mission’s Real World Learning efforts and the goal that by 2030 every Shawnee Mission student will earn an MVA by the time they graduate.
If you have any questions, please contact your Real World Learning counselor at your student’s school:

HEALTH UPDATE
To those families who are contacted through the remainder of the school year, by the nurse’s office staff.
We will be excluding students we have identified as missing required vaccinations until they receive them. We have exhausted our efforts at getting those done.
To prevent a delay in enrolling in the fall, those students who are missing any vaccinations will be called to the nurse’s office and parent/guardian will be called to pick them up.
If you believe you have a student in need of a required vaccine please feel free to call 913-993-9704 or 913-993-6916.
There are community based supports that we may recommend so that your student may remain in school.
We are here to help!
Notes from the NURSE
You may have recently heard news reports about increases of illness including allergies this spring, as is typical with this time of year. In SMSD, we have begun to see increases in absence due to illness; with a few physician diagnosed illnesses and many generalized symptoms.
One of the most important things to help decrease the spread of illness is for those who are not feeling well to stay home. If your child has a temperature of over 100.0 or has vomited or has had diarrhea, they must stay home. Students may return to school when they have been free from fever (without medication), vomiting, or diarrhea for 24 hours.
Your child may also be ill, but without these symptoms. They may have a sore throat, headache, cough, or generally not feel well. If you suspect illness, please keep your child home. If in doubt about sending your child to school, contact the school nurse or your child’s doctor.
Weekly Schedule Reminders....
Please always check the school calendar for the most up to date schedule SMN Calendar
- April 12, 13, 14: Actor's studio: Scenes from Shakespeare
- April 18: Charity Picnic (modified schedule: seminar in afternoon)

Our school district has selected the Student Insurance Plan from K&K Insurance Group to make reliable coverage available to parents. If you don’t have other insurance, this plan may be a resource to consider. Additionally, even if you have other coverage, this plan can help fill expensive “gaps' ' caused by deductibles and copays.
