Dear KFCS Families & Community:

November is National Native American heritage month. In honor of this month, the Klamath Tribes youth council is sharing daily facts pertaining to Native history, culture and contemporary native issues. The goal of Native American Heritage Month is to spread knowledge and awareness of the history and issues effecting indigenous people in the United States with native and non-native people to dispel negative stereotypes while sharing the resilient Native American cultures.

Here are a few National Native American Month Facts;

• There are five hundred and seventy-four recognized tribes and over two hundred non-federally recognized tribes in the continental United States and Alaska. While some of these tribes share similar customs and languages, each are separate nations with unique cultures, languages and customs.
• The state of Oregon is home to nine federally recognized Tribal Nations; they are the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siusilaw, The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, The cow creek Band of Umpqua Indians, the Coquille Indian Tribe and the Burns Paiute Tribe.
• Klamath County, Western Lake County, Northeastern Modoc County and Northeastern Siskiyou County make of the Aboriginal Homelands of the Klamath Tribes. The Klamath Tribes are a sovereign, federally recognized tribal nation comprised of three tribes; The Klamath Tribe, Modoc Tribe and the Yahooskin Band/Norther Paiute Indians.
• Indigenous people in the U.S. were not granted citizenship until June 2, 1924.
• Tribes in the U.S. today operate as sovereign nations. Tribal sovereignty refers to the right for tribal governments to govern themselves as independent nations and regulate their own affairs.
• In 2021, Secretary Deb Haaland from the Laguna Pueblo Tribe made history as the first Native American to serve as a U.S. Cabinet leader.
• In 1978, the American Indian Religious Freedom Act was passed to restore and protect the rights of Native American, Alaska Native and Hawaiian people to practice traditional ceremonies, cultural practices and traditional spiritual beliefs.
• The Klamath Tribes are led by the Klamath Tribes General Council, consisting of all-enrolled tribal members age eighteen plus every three years. The general council elects a ten-member Tribal Council to represent them as their Tribal government.
• As of November 2022, the Klamath Tribes have just over 5,800 enrolled citizens. Approximately half of those tribal members live in Klamath County, many more Klamath tribal descendants also live in Klamath county and beyond.

Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, 2022. Please do not forget to set your clocks and watches back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night. We can all enjoy an extra hour on Sunday.

Healthy Klamath has asked us to be a part of this challenge, along with countless other establishments in the community. There will be awards and prizes for the challenge, community fitness classes and events you can attend.

Klamath Falls City Schools Music Department hosted a combined concert this past Tuesday at Ponderosa Middle School.

The two schools put together a Harvest Festival Concert featuring all Ponderosa and Klamath Union choirs and orchestras.

Congratulations to the Klamath Union High School cross country team after the school's girls distance team won back-to-back Skyline District Championships, and the boys team took second place.

Both teams will run in the OSAA State Championships tomorrow (Nov. 5) in Eugene.

In the district meet, Isabela Coffman had Klamath Union's best time for the girls team and earned second place with her time of 20:24.4. No Pelican finished bellow the 15th spot in the 31-person race.

The KU boys team also had a second-place finisher as Carter Harmon was the top Pelican runner and penciled down a time of 16:14.4.

KU Girls Soccer

The Klamath Union girls soccer team had a strong finish to its season by upsetting No. 15 Seaside in an OSAA State Championship Play-in game at Broadway Field in Seaside.

The Pelicans held the Seagulls scoreless in the state playoff qualifier and won, 2-0.

Klamath Union's season came to an end in the first round of the state playoffs this past Wednesday and fell to No. 3 Gladstone, 5-0.

The Skyline Conference this year proved to boast some of the strongest teams in all Class 4A play as four teams (No. 2 Hidden Valley, No. 9 Henley, No. 16 Mazama and No. 14. Klamath Union) all made the state championships.

The Pelicans finished their season 2-5-1 in the Skyline Conference and 7-8-1 overall. Though finishing fourth in the conference just below Mazama, the Pelicans ended with a higher ranking in the state playoffs after their upset win against Seaside.

The girls soccer team will say goodbye to seniors Hataya Richardson, Alexis Dahm, Margot Cross and Samantha Pope.

Dan Stearns and Klamath Union Digital Media have come up with a clever way to thank our many employees at Klamath Falls City Schools.

The graphic design class at KU came up with a design on a t-shirt to say "thank you" to our KFCS staff and all the hard work done at the district.

The first two "thank you" t-shirts are for KFCS Payroll Lead, Tanya Thornton, and Payroll & GL, Charity Roach.

The new district website has an Alumni page for graduates of KU. This past week, six KU alumni sent us updates on their lives since they graduated. Take a look on the KU Alumni page on the district website. And, if you are an alumni, be sure and send us YOUR update!
