The Cardinal Way

As we get closer to Spring Break, I find myself looking forward to a bit of time off. I am ready for a slower pace and for a little more time to rest. But, I have also found myself doing something I hate...wishing for time to pass quickly. I dislike when I catch myself wishing days of my life away so I can get to a certain time, a certain opportunity, or a certain point of success.

I think it is important for us to notice how often we are looking for more, rather than relishing in what we have been given in the amazingness of today. At times, we want the past to be changed, we want it to be more, better, or different. We might find that sometimes we catch ourselves longing for the good old days and a chance to have more time, even one day, at some period of the past. Conversely, we dream of times to come and want the future to unfold for us exactly as we expect or to happen now.

When you are longing for the past to return or the future to happen now, you are ultimately neglecting today. There is no way to be fully present in what you are doing or be grateful for all you have if you want something other than what you have the opportunity to do right now. It reminds me of the famous Bil Keane quote, “Yesterday's the past, tomorrow's the future, but today is a gift. That's why it's called the present.”

If you treat today like anything other than a gift, you are wishing your life away. All you have is what you do each day. The gifts you receive today have an expiration date, you only have them for a short time, so make the best of each day regardless of the setting, or your personal opinions on how things should come to play.

Regardless, enjoy your time each day. Whether that is a day at work, a day at home, or a day on vacation, it is a gift -- treat it as such!

• the music department for their extra efforts with students in ISSMA. Over the past few weeks, our students in all music programs have received numerous Gold and Gold with Distinction ratings at competitions!
• Athletic department for hosting the Winter Awards Banquet this week.

Congratulations to the DECA and FCCLA clubs. Each of these groups has participated in competitions in the past week and have had great success! Thank you to Mrs. Neville, Mrs. Quinlin, and Mrs. Rettig for supporting these programs.

Week 28: Grateful Friday Challenge

Hey! Yippie! We did it! Another great week in Perry-dise Township is almost finished. Every day we get to interact with kids and teach something we are passionate about is truly a reason to celebrate. We are well into the month of March and Selection Sunday is coming up fast!! Dang, it’s a great time to be alive! I can’t wait to fill out brackets, cheer for the underdogs, and celebrate wins for my favorite teams!

So, I looked up other reasons to celebrate in March on this website: National Day Calendar. This got me thinking… if March 11th is a day for recognizing meteorology, tamales, chia seeds, chips and dip, puppies, and a near miss …what else makes today worth celebrating? So this is your #SHSGFC challenge: Make the last day worth celebrating in your classroom. Post a sign outside your door with what you are celebrating inside in your classroom based on today’s lesson.

Here are some possibilities to get you thinking:

In Math: Celebrating 3.14, because honestly... Who doesn’t like pi?

In English: Celebrating the verb, because you can’t do anything without it!

In History: Celebrating history where stories are told and never get old… just kidding they get older every day.

In Science: Celebrating the proton...they are always so positive!

In PE: Celebrating the only subject that makes your heart race.

In Special Ed: Celebrating our differences while finding our strengths.

In Art: Celebrating pottery! Let’s get fired up!

In Music: Celebrating where it’s okay to get into a little bit of treble.

In World Languages: Celebrating the smile... a language we can all speak fluently.

In FACS: Celebrating the skills that pay the bills.

In Business: Celebrating investments, they always get my interest.

With banners flying as we go…

Mrs. Posadas' AP Spanish students have been working on a Genius Project in class.Students could pick anything they were interested in or something they wanted to investigate. Some students cooked, one student investigated the effects of sleep deprivation on the body and how to have better habits. A student did a day in her life as a dancer, and one student explored salsa and went to a Mark Anthony concert. Below is one of the videos from her students.

Over the past couple of weeks, Mr. Francis and Mr. Lundsford have support our students in their Spring Play performances. Participating in Theater in the Round, the students have put on six great performances of Brothers Grimm. You still have two chances to catch this great performance after school and this evening. The show is outstanding! We hope you can come out and support our students.

Mrs. Gearhart and Mrs. Schnepp's students have been working on a PBL unit to promote the RDM Blood Drive. Students were able to share their learning this week in the IMC. Students to move around the IMC and learn more about the upcoming Blood Drive through these educational and promotional materials created by Biology students.

The School Counseling Office hosted our first Mock Interview Day this week for our students. Students could sign up to participate and practice their interview skills. We had 11 community partners that volunteered their time to interview our students! The students that participated had a great experience and were appreciative of the opportunity.

Mrs. Jordan's Early Childhood Education II students created and made bulletin boards designs for an elementary school. THe students then created these bulletin boards for their site classrooms at the Early Childhood Academy and Homecroft Kindergarten Academy. We appreciate the partnership with Mr. Osborne and Mrs. Pleak at these two schools!
