High Performance Learning School
Introduction by Miss H Nutting, Assistant Headteacher
This half term involves assessment of learning for all year groups, and I am keen to share with you how assessment works at CHCS. As students learn new skills and acquire knowledge throughout the term they are encouraged to complete independent study to ensure that they commit new learning to long term memory through retrieval practice.
Retrieval practice happens at the start of all lessons across schools where students participate in low stakes quizzing in order to identify gaps in learning. We also practice this in our maximum learning sessions where students build excellent revision and independent study habits.
At the start of the new half term, students in years 7, 8 and 9 took their first assessments of the year. In addition to the usual information regarding your child’s progress, you will also have the percentage that they achieved in their assessment and the year group average.
Year 10 and 12 also underwent assessment, the first ones of their new qualification journey.
Teachers will use these to decide a ‘working at’ grade from their first few months of the qualification and a predicted grade for their final grade at the end of year 11/13. Year 11 and year 13 are completing their first set of mock exams this year, giving them the experience of the real exams, from the seating down to the routines of revision before the exam.
I hope that this half term has provided your child with a positive experience of assessment at CHCS and am looking forward to teachers providing them with the feedback that they need to improve further in the Spring.
Sixth Form Open Evening
Thank you to everyone who attended our Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday, 30th November. It was wonderful to see new faces and many familiar Year 11 faces at the event, including their families who attended.
We hope everyone enjoyed the session, got all the information they required from the presentation and their engagement with the subject teachers and current sixth form students. If you require any more information, please email us at coltonhillsschool@wolverhampton.gov.uk. We look forward to welcoming them back to Colton Hills for their Post-16 journey.
Extraordinary Winter Fiesta at Colton Hills School - Year 13 Business Studies Students Take Charge!
Amidst the winter cheer, our diverse school community came together for an unforgettable night organised and orchestrated entirely by our Year 13 Business Studies students. As part of their comprehensive Unit 4 on Managing an Event, these budding entrepreneurs orchestrated a vibrant and lively school disco that radiated with excitement and community spirit.
The event was a resounding success, with students reveling in the festive atmosphere, enjoying refreshments and capturing cherished memories through Polaroid pictures. The energy was infectious, and the sense of togetherness was palpable throughout the night. Through their hard work and dedication, these students managed to raise an impressive £380! Half of this generous sum will be donated to UNICEF, supporting their vital humanitarian efforts worldwide. This contribution stands as a testament to the students' commitment to making a positive global impact.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the teachers and Year 13 students whose unwavering support and dedication ensured the seamless execution of this fantastic event. Their guidance and enthusiasm were pivotal in making the Winter Fiesta an evening to remember. Congratulations to our Year 13 Business Studies students for their remarkable achievement and for showcasing the power of unity and community within our school. Your dedication and passion inspire us all!
Climbing for Community
An avid adventurer, Mr Malhi set off on this two week expedition with a group of friends and even managed to fly the Colton Hills flag the Himalayas. Mr Malhi added: "I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for all the generosity & support towards Birch Thompson Memorial Fund Charity's sponsored Everest Base Camp climb. Your donation means more than words can express. Your belief in the cause fuels my determination to reach new heights, quite literally & figuratively. Together, we're not just climbing mountains; we're breaking barriers & creating positive change in the world. Your generosity inspired me every step of the way. Thank you."
Biology in Action
Fabulous Ms McClure, our Head of Science and Sixth Form, did us proud again at the latest #BiologyinAction workshop in Manchester on 20th November. Ms McClure has presented in previous years and and this year is no different, as she delivers a session on exam revision tips.
