Huntsville City Schools News & Updates: Jan. 9, 2025
HCS to Close on Friday, Jan. 10, 2025, Due to Winter Weather
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – (Jan. 9, 2025) – Huntsville City Schools (HCS) and district offices will be closed on Friday, Jan. 10, 2025, due to the onset of hazardous winter weather. This decision prioritizes the safety and well-being of our students, families, and staff members.
Activities: All after-school programs, athletics, and extracurricular events previously scheduled for Friday evening or the weekend will be postponed to a later date.
Access: HCS buildings and facilities will be closed on Friday and remain off limits throughout the weekend so HCS crews can ensure buildings and grounds are safe for operations.
Attendance: Students and employees should not report to campuses unless otherwise directed by their supervisors.
E-Learning: No e-learning sessions will take place.
Plans for Monday, Jan. 13
While the district hopes to resume normal operations on Monday, Jan. 13, 2025, district leaders will assess conditions on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025 and issue a decision by 5 p.m. on Sunday regarding school operations for Monday.

District Announcements
CTE Applications Close on Jan. 17
The HCS Career and Technical Education (CTE) application is open through January 17, 2025. The application is for current 9th-11th grade HCS students who wish to attend a CTE travel program during the 2025-2026 school year.
Students and families will need to log in with the student's HCS/Clever email accounts to be able to access the CTE Application. For any application-related questions, please reach out to the CTE Counselor for help.
HCS M2M Applications Close on Jan. 15
Majority-to-Minority (M2M) applications are open until January 15, 2025 for the 2025-26 school year. Please be sure that you have your student's 10 digit student id (SID) number when filling out the application. Also, your student needs to be the majority at their home school. If you have a student going from elementary to middle school or from middle to high school, you will need to reapply.

If you have a student that is currently on a M2M in Elementary School and going to Middle/Junior High School for the 25-26 School year you will need to reapply.
If you have a student currently on a M2M in Middle/Junior High School and going into High School for the 25-26 School year you will need to reapply.

BOE Recognition: 9th Consecutive Title for Huntsville High Swim Team
Superintendent Clarence Sutton and the Huntsville City Board of Education recognized the Huntsville High Men's SwIm Team as AHSAA State Champions.
Two HCS Teachers Awarded the Jenice Riley Memorial Scholarship
The Alabama Humanities Alliance is proud to announce the recipients of the Jenice Riley Memorial Scholarship. This competitive award supports Alabama’s dedicated K-8 educators in developing innovative history- and civics-related projects that inspire and educate their students.
2024 Riley Scholars Recipient
Alana McNeil, 3rd-grade teacher at Farley Elementary School, won the award for an engaging project, “Mapping Our World”, that combines math, reading, language skills, and critical thinking to teach students the art of map-reading.
2024 Riley Scholars Recipient
Shatia Howard, Kindergarten teacher at Lakewood Elementary School, won the award for “Diverse Friends, Happy Hearts.” This heartwarming initiative celebrates diversity and promotes acceptance among young students through literature and interactive projects.

College Night for Parents & Students on January 14
Students and parents of students in 9th-11th grades are invited to meet college admissions representatives to learn more about a variety of college opportunities.
Attend break-out sessions on college related topics including:
- Applying to College
- Paying for College
- Why GPA & ACT Matter - Including ACT Changes
- Athletic Recruitment/NCAA Eligibility
- Understanding Military Benefits
This event will take place in the Freshman Academy at Huntsville High School.
Next Public DAC Meeting Set for Jan. 23
A Desegregation Advisory Committee (DAC) Public Meeting for the HCS District will be held January 23, 2024, and you're invited! This meeting will be held in-person at Columbia High School at 6:00pm as well as virtually via Facebook Live on the Huntsville City Schools Facebook page.
This meeting is designed to keep the community informed about the Desegregation Advisory Committee (DAC) and the implementation of the Consent Order, as well as provide an open forum for the community members to ask questions and provide feedback regarding their experiences with the implementation of the Consent Order to the DAC members. (per section 9 pgs. 83-85 of the Consent Order).

2025 Curriculum Showcase to be Held February 8
The 2025 Curriculum Showcase will be held in the VBC East Hall for parents and students to experience all the career tech pathways that HCS has to offer.
Middle schools, high schools, HCS departments, colleges, and local businesses will also be in attendance. There will be breakout sessions for AP and honors, magnet, and dual enrollment.
There will also be stage performances from across the district and JROTC color guard will lead the curriculum parade!
