Featured Story: Kindergarten Roundup
Lake Shore Welcomes Class of 2038
We are grateful for the effort and enthusiasm shown in welcoming and celebrating our Class of 2038 Kindergarteners.
Over 150 students from the Class of 2038 received a warm welcome at our 2025 Kindergarten Roundup event. Future Tigers, Rockets, and All-Stars participated in readiness activities, bus tours, enjoyed treats, and signed commitment forms, while parents felt supported by our welcoming staff and current student leaders. The positive energy was contagious, bringing smiles all around.
Fourth grader Parker Thompson was thrilled to introduce his younger 4-year-old sister, who will soon be starting Kindergarten, to Violet's principal and teachers. He loves the school and is confident she will too.
Our students are the heart of our schools, and it was a joy to offer these educational experiences as we work together to prepare for their exciting first year of school.
LSPS provides a full day of comprehensive instruction in core subjects, including English Language Arts, reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. Students also enjoy specialized classes in STEAM, art, music, and physical education.
A special thank you to Superintendent Dr. DiPonio, Elementary Principals Mr. Barranca, Mr. Pittinato, and Mrs. Winiarski, as well as our teachers, support staff, student volunteers, student-athletes, and mascots for your outstanding leadership at this event.

People with the character strength of humor like to laugh and bring smiles to other people. And the best way to bring out the laughter and smiles is by reliving Spring Break 2025 through these photographs.
The Hachey Family and the Topalli Family enjoyed fun in the sun in Florida! Lakota & Luna Headrick from GSRP loved spotting animals at the Detroit Zoo. The Salera’s spent their time getting their vegetable garden started! Brian Wendling from Masonic Heights met Pro Bowlers and also visited Stahls Museum. The Bailey Family traveled to the Ann Arbor Hands on Museum. Violet Elementary's Scarlett Hogan played with her new soccer ball at the LSHS track! Sylvia & Norah from Masonic Heights enjoyed a day downtown on the people mover, family skate night, and laser tag with their cousins! Senior Lainey Catlin spent her final spring break of high school in Nassau! Bristol Biondo from Masonic Heights enjoyed a cruise to Mexico and Belize! Griff and the Hovis Family went to Kure Beach/Carolina Beach, North Carolina! They went on a private fishing charter and caught Red Drum and Black Drum fish. The Mahalak Family took a surprise trip to Universal Studios in Orlando, FL for the week. Evie (6th @ KMS) & Isla (4th @ Masonic) spent time riding rollercoasters, going to the waterpark, eating great food, and seeing many other attractions!
Time off spent with family and friends is valuable for strengthening relationships, reducing stress, and promoting overall well-being, offering opportunities for relaxation, emotional support, and creating lasting memories. Thank you for sharing your pictures with us!

People with the character strength of fairness believe that all people have value. They approach situations with an unbiased mindset and treat everyone with respect.
Coaches are always analyzing player performances, demonstrating skills, providing encouragement and honesty with both players and parents. They teach fair play to their teammates and opponents. This includes modeling and demanding good sportsmanship. Winning isn't everything. Accepting bad calls by refs, treating every player the same, and applying team rules to all players is. But there's one thing that is universally fair to all: Hard work.
Each new day is a new opportunity to improve yourself. Take it and make the most of it.
Track coach Ms. Phillips has provided her athletes with Spring conditioning opportunities after school. A workout was scheduled 2x per week during the offseason inside our upgraded and newly renovated, state-of-the-art weight room.
Video clip: https://x.com/myLSPS/status/1895429034756162034
Under the direction of James Rogers, LSHS head football coach, athletes complete calisthenics exercises, a form of strength training that utilizes an individual's body weight as resistance to perform multi-joint, compound movements with little or no equipment.
This Lake Shore Public Schools investment improves athletic performance and benefits overall health. It reduces the risks of injury, increases strength, contributes to agility, quickness, and power, and optimizes and improves movement.
Added to the weight room were new dumbbell sets, lifting racks, cardio equipment, kettlebells and therapy bands. Space has been optimized to include 12 stations for lifting. An outdoor turfed training area was added to allow athletes to work on additional exercises and include baseball and softball pitching.
It is our hope that our Strength and Conditioning Physical Education classes will explode with enrollment as students of all shapes, sizes, and athletic ability choose wellness through fitness.
Athletic Coordinator Rich Bowers would like to see all coaches take advantage of the weight room, which currently opens at 6:30am and is available well into the evening hours year-round. He said, "Our coaching staff and teams are required to use this facility for practice. It has become a norm and part of our culture."
We are truly grateful for our strong team of fall, winter, and spring coaching staff who teach moral ethics through modeling good sportsmanship and fairness: https://shoriansports.com/staff-directory

Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate Wellness Spirit Week (4/14-18) and Appreciation of Beauty & Excellence (4/21-25).

It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Anyone can report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees, or schools. Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While continually evolving and reviewed annually, on this Safety and Security webpage you will find a list of recent and current safety measures implemented by Lake Shore Public Schools to provide the safest environment for our students and staff.
Inspiration
Disney on Stage
We appreciate all of the hard work of our stage junkies!
Thank you to Rodgers Elementary's Drama Club for their entertaining performances of The Lion King Kids.
The Lion King Jr. follows Simba, a young lion cub destined to be king, who flees his kingdom after his father is murdered by his uncle Scar, eventually finding his way back to reclaim his throne and save the Pridelands.
Mrs. Kiefer has been running the Drama Club at Rodgers Elementary for 9 years. All of their shows have been Disney Jr. or Disney Kids productions, officially licensed through Music Theater International, in New York City. She wrote, "Although all of our shows have been amazing, I have to say that our production of Disney's Lion King Kids was by far my favorite the first time & it's back again! The music, the African inspired music, sets, and costumes...and that sunrise over the savannah! It gives us chills! "
Mrs. Snarski serves as her Co-Director and Co-Producer. They are so blessed to have Crystal Roy as our amazing Set Designer, and Mrs. Miranda Wiszowaty as our Backstage Managers. Mrs. Renee Atkins has also been on board this year as an Assistant Director! They also have many incredible parents who pitch in to help! They truly have an amazing team that puts on the show!
Kiefer adds, "These kids never fail to impress us! They are dedicated, driven, and so very talented! They are truly stars and they shine bright!"

A special thank you to LSHS Stage Crew members Ashley Geib, Hailey Magasark, Jimmy Sheen, and Genny Zielinski for running the lights, sound, moving props, and stage crafting.
Bonus: Theatre Director Raymond Flipek and the talented LSHS musical theatre students wowed audiences with Little Shop of Horrors in January. Now, they’re back and seeking your support as they captivate us once again with their upcoming production of The Little Mermaid.

The plot revolves around Ariel, a mermaid, falling in love with a human, Prince Eric, after she saves him from drowning. In the story, humans and mermaids are not allowed to interact with each other. Ariel visits Ursula the Sea Witch, who agrees to turn her into a human, and she must kiss Prince Eric within three days so she can belong to him forever.
Innovation
Never Stop Questioning
The most important thing is to never stop questioning.
Science labs allow students to interact directly with the data gathered. They get a first-hand learning experience by performing various experiments on their own.
In Mrs. Honold's Forensics class at Lake Shore High School, students conducted fiber burn tests to see how various natural and synthetic fibers react to a flame. Students burn small samples of each fiber and observe the flame behavior. Key observations included color of the flame, odor, residue, and burning speed.
Mrs. Clow and Mrs. Kemner's 8th grade science classes at Kennedy Middle School completed a balloon car lab. This experiment demonstrated Newton's Third Law, which states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. When the air was released from the balloon, it pushed in one direction (the action), and the car moves in the opposite direction (the reaction).
At the elementary level, Ms. Wilson's 2nd graders at Rodgers completed a Skittles experiment, a simple science activity where the sugar and food coloring from Skittles dissolve in warm water, creating a colorful rainbow effect as the colors spread and separate. Students practiced observing and documenting changes in the experiment, enhancing their scientific observation and recording skills.
High Touch High Tech delivers quality STEM activities for kids. Their educational and enriching programs for all students at Violet Elementary ignite a child's natural curiosity about science, and help to build problem-solving skills, self-esteem and the confidence to try something new.
High Touch High Tech scientist Rocket Ryan converted Mrs. Husek's elementary classroom at Violet into a Living Laboratory, fostering a lifelong love of science. This honorary All-Star has worked with Lake Shore for 14 years!
Rocket Ryan discussed how matter matters with 5th grade students and designed stations that helped them use teamwork and collaboration to understand how adding energy causes molecules to spread out. Students began with a simple evaporation race and ended with homemade slushies. These were ingenious lessons that caused many smiles and laughter.
Video clip: https://x.com/myLSPS/status/1906737749736014107
Science labs provide a hands-on experience where students can actively participate in experiments. This practical approach helps them better understand theoretical concepts by directly observing and interacting with the materials and processes involved.
Robotics
Robotics is one of the most exciting fields of study today, and the best part is that Lake Shore Public Schools students are diving into it like never before. Robotics isn't just about building cool machines—it's about exploring technology, solving real-world problems, and working as a team.
At the secondary level, Broken Drill Bits, Lake Shore High School's robot, finished 33rd out of 40 teams at the FRC Ferndale event and 26th out of 40 teams at their second event hosted by Wayne State. Well done, Simon Kozak, Charles Kozak, Lily Benson, Lucas Hoffman, Lincoln Hoffman, Madison Pelak, and Rini Zelenak!
Team Captain Simon Kozak is proud to be part of the team for 6 years. He said, "I love creativity, problem-solving, and the overall competition. Ideas branched off the original kit and, with little time and materials, we created a crafty design and name for our robot: Howard."
In addition, 9 Kennedy Middle School recently attended a Square One Robotics Competition at Oakland Community College. They were joined by some elementary friends! Mrs. Wolenski explained, "It was about V2X, which is the computer coding for autonomous vehicles." We're so proud of your efforts, Jaxson Herring, Vincent Parrinello, Titus Rose, Jayden Giannetti, Nathan Schoof, Dennis Tikkanen, Nolan Garbacz, Kalix Loumanis, and Maxson Pojeta. Violet Elementary received a 1st place in STEM Stewards for a poster they created prior to the competition.
Mrs. Clow said, "Super proud of them this was a great learning experience as it was their first time came really close to winning a trophy!"
Their mission is to empower the youth to learn engineering skills and processes while implementing business management principles through hands-on experiences.
Market Day
Our 2nd graders at Masonic Heights Elementary have been working hard on creating paper products to sell during their Market Day. They've created store fronts to share our products as well. This is their big project for their Economics unit, raising money for the Lake Shore Family Assistance Program.
All items were priced $0.25 to $1.00. Customers (staff and families) paid with quarters as students are learning about quarters and counting change in their math unit.
The 2nd graders came up with a variety of ideas such as Hannah's Motivational Bananas, Sophia's Sweet Strawberries, Logan's Lucky Origami, William's Ninja Stars, and so many more! Charlie's Carnations were scented with real perfume! Sports fan Ricky Glover sold paper footballs; His favorite Detroit Lions player is Wide Receiver Jameson Williams. Zac Angst plays travel baseball with his Bulldogs team. This inspired him to create paper baseball mitts.
Mari made colorful bookmarks. She thoughtfully explained, "I love to read and my favorite series is Dogman."
Video clip: https://x.com/myLSPS/status/1909640573280985304
In 2025 our 2nd grade donated all of the proceeds, $825.65 from Market Day, to the Lake Shore Family Assistance Foundation. We are so proud of their hard work and generosity and appreciative of staff for organizing this project! Way to go, Tigers!

Athletics
Athletics Website
We have built an online home for our athletic department. Our goal is to bring our athletic programs to life by sharing schedules, scores, and social media while ensuring our athletes get the promotion they deserve. Visit the Shorian Sports website for 24/7/365 access to the information you have always wanted and follow along with our sports action.
We have partnered with Kroger to help fund our athletics. Please read this letter from our Athletic Coordinator Rich Bowers.
