THE WOODLANDS HIGH SCHOOL FINAL EXAM EXEMPTION POLICY: Seniors are the only
students in the Fall semester that may be exempt from final exams for half-credit courses which have a final exam, not a midterm. Students must maintain a 90-100 class average for the semester (18-weeks) and have no more than 3 absences for the semester or have an 85-89 class average for the semester (18- weeks) with no more than 2 absences for the semester. In addition, the following criteria apply as well:
1. Seniors must meet the criteria listed above and the discipline requirement listed below. Seniors may be exempt from all their final exams both in the Fall and Spring semesters. Seniors may not be exempt from midterm exams in the Fall semester.
2. Underclassmen are not eligible for exemptions from final exams or midterms in the Fall
semester.
3. Absences include all days missed: Excused and Unexcused. Pre-approved absences, funerals, DOC’s, and hospital stays count against exemptions. School field trips, athletic events, UIL events, HCPs (health care provider - student attended school part of the day), PREs (present), GLOs (grade level office), ECLs (election clerk), CTZs (citizenship), NATs (naturalization), CVs (up to two College Visits) and religious holidays are not considered absences.
4. A student granted a final exam exemption must still attend that class during the final exam period and must be present the entire duration of the final exam period to be considered exempt. Students who check out early during a final exam will forfeit the exemption and will receive a grade of Incomplete for the exam. Failure to attend will result in a zero or an incomplete for that course.
5. Any student that has served SAC, DAEP, or OSS while enrolled in a course during the semester of the final exam is not eligible for a final exam exemption for that course.
6. To ensure that all students have the opportunity to complete their exams in a distraction-free environment, the attendance office will not be doing early checkouts during exam periods. Parents and students should plan accordingly so that students remain in their exam period the entire duration of the exam period (both mid-term and final exams).
ATHLETICS:
BOYS BASKETBALL: Boys Basketball has begun! The Woodlands Highlanders basketball team had their first practice of the season on Wednesday, October 30th. In order to be introduced at the Rebounders Club 31st Annual Golf Tournament on the afternoon of October 30th, the varsity players all had 5:00 am wake-up calls with practice starting at 5:30 am. Then on Monday evening, November 4th, members of all the Highlander varsity and sub-varsity teams were introduced to the public. The night started with a bagpipe performance to get the crowd fired up. That was followed with several raucous performances by the Highlanders cheerleaders. Then the lights went down, the strobe lights went up, and with music blaring, each team member was introduced via spotlight coming through the cheerleading tunnel. The 2019-20 season will be Coach Dale Reed’s 15th year leading the Highlanders basketball team. Coach Reed’s teams have qualified for the district tournament in each of his 15 years and hope to do the same this year. Preseason scrimmage games will be held on Saturday, November 9th at home and Monday, November 11th at Grand Oaks High School. Then the Highlanders’ first game of the season will be on Friday, November 15th at home against Alief Elsik. Come support these guys as we try to make the playoffs for a 15th consecutive year. Schedules can be found on our website at www.highlanderbasketball.org
See you all there.
Go Highlanders!!

COUNSELOR'S CORNER:
Generation Texas Week: CISD will be celebrating Generation Texas Week November 18-22. All of our campuses in our feeder zone have a fun filled week planned with many different activities. Some of the campuses will be doing daily dress up days to promote future awareness about colleges and career opportunities. A few of the campuses will also be doing door decorating contests.
On our campus, we will be encouraging students to think about their future beyond high school. Some of our activities will include posting college facts around the building for students to learn about colleges. On Wednesday, November 20th, we will ask our student body and staff to wear their favorite college shirt and/or jersey. For seniors, we will encourage them to wear a shirt or jersey that represents one of the colleges that they have applied to this year or they have an interest in. Then, throughout the day, the students will hear information from each of their teachers about their college alma maters. Our goal for the week is to give students information about the many opportunities available to them after high school.
District Presentations: Student Assistance Services, the Westchester Coalition for Drug and Alcohol Free Youth and Conroe ISD present:

Parents in our district can attend either event:
Tuesday, November 12th, at 6:00 pm in the Conroe High School Main Campus Auditorium
Or
Wednesday, November 13th, at 6:30 pm at Oak Ridge High School Main Campus Auditorium.
Remember, this presentation is for adults only!

TWHS ART TRUST: Have you ever noticed the 44 works of art by established Texas artists that are permanently displayed in the hallways at school? This is The Woodlands High School Art Collection and we are celebrating our 10th anniversary! This collection of art works has been selected and purchased by our students. Each year we add new works to the collection and our next selection process has begun. Submissions open on October 1st and will be accepted until November 8th for consideration into our collection for 2020. We invite established Texas artists who have had work accepted into a juried show and are over 18 to submit works to be considered for acquisition in 2020. Click HERE to learn more.
After November 8th, our student committee will narrow down the works submitted to 12-15 artworks that will be voted on by the entire student body in late January. Posters of the artworks will be on view in all classrooms by mid-January and the original pieces will be displayed in the cafeteria just prior to voting. The students will purchase as many as possible of the pieces that receive the most votes on January 30th.
The artworks are purchased through funds set aside by Student Council from the Homecoming Dance, however, the framing, lighting and conservation of these pieces need funding. Consider helping with that funding and show your support for The Woodlands High School Art Trust by joining our "One Hundred Friends of Art." Our goal is to have 100 arts supporters make an annual donation to support our cause. Donations are tax deductible and start as low as $10!! Visit our website to make a contribution: www.twhsat.org
The Woodlands High School Art Trust (TWHSAT) a 501(c)3 organization, was established in 2011 to help maintain, conserve and display the student-selected, student-purchased collection of established artists at The Woodlands High School. The vision for the TWHS Art Trust is to see the art collection grow each year and to have it extend through the hallways of the high school. We offer FREE tours of our collection to schools and other groups by appointment.
For more information on The Woodlands High School Art Trust please visit our website: www.twhsat.org or contact Susan Cosculluela at twhsat@gmail.com
