NEWS & UPDATES FROM SM NORTH
Seniors and Senior Parents/Guardians,
The year is flying by and we want to remind all of you about some important dates and information pertaining to Seniors.
Dates to highlight and remember:
April 28th, 2022 (7 am) Senior Honors and Awards
- This will be an invite only event for the seniors and a set number of family. Please mark your calendars if you applied for a SMN based scholarship. We will invite those being recognized and more details will follow when those Honors and Awards are finalized.
May 13th, 2022 Seniors’ Last Day
May 18th, 2022 (7:00PM) Graduation
- Graduation is planned to take place outdoors at the SM North District Stadium. A move indoors or a makeup will be determined if inclement weather causes a change to the original schedule.
There will be more communication coming as graduation approaches. When we send these emails we will use the subject line of SMN Senior Email #1,2,3 etc. so you can be sure to know the order of communication. Until then, please be aware of a few items that could be road blocks for graduating.
Academic Achievement: It is extremely important that every Senior knows where they stand academically and the classes they must complete to satisfy all graduation requirements. Check with your counselor if you have concerns.
- Financial Accounts must be in good standing: Please know that the current year fees must be paid in full to be able to participate in the graduation. Previous years and/or outstanding fees must be paid in full to receive your diploma. To avoid any issues please make sure you pay all current year fees no later than Thursday, May 6th.
- SM North has been and will continue to send email notices to those with unpaid balances at the beginning of each month.
- You can reference your fees and payment history on your Skyward account.
The Senior Finals Schedule has not yet been finalized. We will share that schedule at a later date.
We are in the first week of the final quarter here at the Brick House ……. FINISH STRONG!!!
SM North Administrators

4th Quarter After School Tutoring
Students are invited to stay after school on Mondays and Wednesdays in the Learning Commons for after school tutoring. Five staff members are available for support, including one teacher from each of the core subjects- math, ELA, science, and social studies. Free meals are available for all students at 3:00pm in the cafeteria and free rides home within the North area boundaries at 4:30pm. 4th quarter dates begin on March 23rd.
No Parking on Foster
The Overland Park Police Department has received many complaints about several cars violating the "No parking" signs on Foster. The no parking signs apply to both sides of the street on Foster at Johnson Drive. While we understand construction near the fieldhouse makes dismissal meet ups difficult, there are plenty of legal parking spaces in the lower lot just east of the tennis courts. Our community residents who live in the area are having a difficult time getting to their driveways safely at dismissal time. OPMC 12.04.096 parking in violation of a sign is a $60 citation. Please pass this information along to anyone who picks up your student as we would like to avoid unnecessary tickets to our school community.
Thanks, SRO Covington

REQUIRED VACCINATIONS
Thank you to all parents who have turned in updated vaccination records for our SMN students! We still have quite a few students who are missing at least one vaccine. It’s crunch time everyone.
We must have updated immunizations for our students on file before the end of the school year!
Please help us out in the nurse’s office and send any updated vaccine records to valsnow@smsd.org .
PLEASE, if you’ve been emailed or contacted by phone about a missing vaccine, students must have them done before they may enroll in school in the fall.
Our Johnson County Health Department is a good resource for updating vaccines, as is Walgreens, CVS, Mercy and Truth Clinics.
Vaccines can also be obtained at our Health Partnership Clinic at SMW on Thursdays during clinic hours from 11am to 3pm
If you need help contacting any of these businesses, please call us at 913-993-6907 or 913-993-6916.
Stay warm and healthy everyone!!
And, as always, thank you for sharing your amazing children with us!!

NEWS FROM STUDENT SERVICES
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Students must pass their classes with a D (60%) or better in order to receive credit for the class. Students not attaining credits are in danger of not graduating with their classmates. Effective the 21-22 school year, the district will no longer reclassify students. We wanted you to be aware that even though students’ grade levels will progress from 9 to 12, this will not necessarily mean your student has enough credits to meet the graduation requirements. Per the SMSD Program Planning Guide, below is the chart of the minimum number of credits students must earn in order to remain on track to graduate with their classmates.
- Students will advance forward in grade level based on the number of years they have been in high school. Beginning with the 2021-2022 school year, students will no longer be required to meet a minimum credit threshold to advance to the next grade level. However, students must meet all graduation requirements in order to graduate. The following chart should be used as a guide to evaluate whether a student is on track for graduation.
GRADE LEVEL CREDIT GOAL
End of Grade 9 - 5.5 credits
End of Grade 10 - 11.5 credits
End of Grade 11 - 16.5 credits
End of Grade 12 - 23.5 credits
You can find your student’s progress with their Graduation Requirements on your Skyward home page under “Graduation Requirements”.
Summer Programs are posted on the SMSD website:
If you have questions or your student is behind on credits, please reach out to your student’s Academic Counselor by email or phone.

ATTENTION 10th GRADERS!
As a follow up to the demonstration in November, some North students have been meeting with administration to develop some plans to continue encouraging a positive climate in our school. Along with starting a new club, W.I.N.G.S. (Withstand, Influence, Notice, Gather and Speak), the students have organized an opportunity for 10th graders to learn more about sexual harassment.
During Seminar on one of the following dates, 4/12, 4/14, 4/26, or 4/28, you will have the opportunity to attend a presentation on sexual harassment, presented by professionals from MOCSA (Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault). One 45 minute presentation will take place in your seminar classroom, with your seminar classmates, and will allow you to still have time for schoolwork or related activities. If you do not wish to take advantage of this opportunity, please let your seminar teacher know as soon as possible, and we will have an alternate location for you to report. The partnership with MOCSA will continue next year, and will allow more students to have opportunities to learn more about other subjects.
Please plan to attend one (or more) of the WINGS meetings coming up (4/6, 4/13, 4/27, 5/11)- they will be right after school in Room 186. This is a great opportunity to get involved in a movement to bring about positive impacts on all of us at North. If you have any questions, please contact Gwyn Heidrick, Social Worker, 993-6927 or gwynheidrick@smsd.org

Student Recognitions
This past weekend North FIRST Robotics Team 937, now affectionately known as the “Nerd Herd”, competed at the Greater Kansas City Regional FIRST Robotics Competition. Our final rank belies the actual success and performance of our robot. All of this was possible not because of some over-involved engineer or programming adult volunteers helping our club – as is the case for so many clubs – but because of our tireless, industrious, ingenious, persevering and go-getting North students.
Maya Routh (senior, president)
Robin Whitlock (junior, safety officer)
Damaris Shobe (senior, build team lead)
Gabriel Kendle (sophomore, build team lead)
Gabe Schmitz (sophomore, programming team lead)
Carver Simonelli (senior, marketing team lead)
