Kaikōura Suburban School

Term 3 has started with a buzz of activity happening both inside and outside of school. It was a fun and informative trip for Piwakawaka going to visit the local Kaikōura fire brigade. For Toroa a bittersweet end to the last week having the ski trip postponed due to poor weather conditions. Fortunately, Miss Watt had booked a postponement day for the 2nd of September - we all look forward to that.

The Whale Run committee have made great ground in the planning of the event on September 10th 2022. Currently we are looking for sponsors within the community to donate spot prizes, money for event and food donations. If you would like like to offer sponsorship or donations of any kind please let us know. For businesses that make donations and/or sponsorship the Whale run committee, marketing team, offer a shoutout via our social media facebook and instagram pages.

If anyone is heading to Blenheim we have a donation of two family swimming passes from Stadium 2000 for the event and we need someone to pick these up for us, for the Whale run. If you can do this please contact me: 021 024 68839.

The new toilet refurbishment is getting closer to being signed off and approved. Once we have this underway we will share the plans with the community.

On Wednesday the Piwakawaka Class visited the fire station as part of their fire wise unit. Martin and Brendon talked to us about the role of a firefighter, how to phone for help in a fire emergency, and they showed us the equipment they use. We were lucky enough to have a turn squirting the hose. It is really important that every family has working smoke alarms in their house, a fire escape plan, and a safe meeting place. This might be something you could revise as a family.

Connections to Commonwealth Games

This week the Tītī Class have been following the Commonwealth Games closely and learning of past and present competitors that have represented New Zealand in the Commonwealth Games.

Two members of the Tītī Class, Jacob and Scarlett Smith have got a close connection to a very special past Commonwealth games competitor.

Neil Lowsley, Jake and Scarletts Granddad competed in the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games in the 3000m steeplechase and the 5000m race. Neil didn't place in the top three but had a special participation medal from the games and his uniform that he wore that we were lucky enough to see first hand.

Who knows, we may see some future competitors come from Suburban School.

Over the past couple of weeks in Toroa class, we have been focusing on being kind and respectful.

We talked about how this might look in the classroom, school and wider community.

We were challenged to think about ways that we could show kindness and be respectful throughout each day.

We have also been loving maths, diving into fractions and our basic facts.

There are more exciting adventures and cool learning experiences to share in the coming weeks!

In the Toroa class end of term auction, there are a variety of different vouchers to be won.

One of the 'terms and conditions' of the vouchers is that students must reflect on their day!

The students below have reflected on their time in each of the roles from term 2.

We did the roll in the morning, then we did the waiata (Kobi’s song suggestion, man in the mirror by Michael Jackson). Afterwards we chose 2 fitness games out of the suggestion box, havoc and just dance. For reading we did normal rotations but for teacher time with me the students drew a book cover.

In math time we also did rotations. The kiwis did prodigy and math buddy. The strawberries and blueberries did prodigies and teacher time. For teacher time I got the students to do math survival tag. It was easy.

Writing was mixed. I got the class to write a story about an image and then they got to do free writing. The class worked well and was fairly quiet.

To finish off the day we had a class game of team tactics.

I felt my day went pretty well and it was very fun. It was so interesting to see things from the teacher's perspective.

When I was assistant teacher for the day I helped Miss Watt by folding papers. I then had to do lots of photocopying, and I accidentally did too many papers.

It was a fun day and I hope I can become an assistant teacher for the day again some day.
