Thank You!
Dear LISD Families,
This was Staff Appreciation Week and the PTSA organized a delicious lunch with MANY treats for us on Tuesday. Thanks to all the parents and guardians who contributed to the spread in both the elementary and secondary break rooms. We definitely felt appreciated!
We hope you all have a lovely weekend. The annual plant sale is Saturday at 10:00, so come on out to find all your favorites AND support Lopez Island Farming Education. Tomorrow is going to be a beautiful day!
To all you mamas out there, and anyone else in a mothering role, Happy Mother's Day!
All our best to you and your family,
Mary and Martha

Students will show pictures and talk about their experience on Monday, May 15th from 6:00 - 7:00 PM in room 17 (science room). Open to the community. This is a great time for interested students to learn more about the Japanese Connections program and the potential to participate next year.
Life in the Library
Life in the Library! It's been an active, busy spring. We've hosted two learning labs a day and the yearbook committee once a week. Over 25 students were using this great space when this photo was taken.
With the year coming to a close, it's time to round up the books! If you've seen your student's books looking lonely or collecting dust, please help get them back to school. Notes will be going home the first week in June for students having two or more books out. If you have questions about your students books, please email Deirdre at dsteinbrueck@lopezislandschool.org.
All year long, students have been enjoying the gift of reading! From Mr. Tetu's genre studies, to science fair research, to Kindergartners enjoying a picture book, to weekly class read alouds in the library. There's a space for relaxing, working and reading. This is truly a K-12 library! Since the beginning of school, almost 3,500 books have been checked out. The third graders are by far the most active in the library; they have checked out 767 books over the year! Way to go third graders!
The last week of book checkouts will be May 30-June 2. After that, all books need to be returned. Thank you for your support in this effort. Ms. Deirdre
The Trades Fair
The Trades Fair was in Seattle May 5 and was attended by 26 Lopez students.
Interview with Graduating Senior, Tara McDonald
What’s your earliest memory at LISD? I came here in 6th grade and I remember walking around and eating lunch with Jenny and Scarlett by the Rishi Center.
What clubs/athletics/extracurriculars have you been involved in? I’ve been in the French Club and played volleyball and basketball. I also joined the track team in the spring that Covid hit, so it never happened.
What is one positive memory from your time here that you’ll carry with you forever? Volleyball! I’ve played since 6th grade. The actual sport is so fun and I loved traveling on the bus with teammates, practicing after school…just everything.
Finish this sentence: “I cannot live without…….” Redbull!
What is the most creative excuse you have ever used to get out of school work? I once said that I was helping a friend move….but I didn’t really have a friend who was moving. I also once said that I was picking someone up from the ferry and that never happened either.
What is one piece of advice you have for incoming high school students? Try to stay on top of it so you don’t get behind. Once you fall behind, you have to work on the current stuff and the late stuff, and it’s a lot.
What is the most meaningful assignment ever given to you by a teacher? In English 10 with Ms. S, we read Nickle and Dimed. We had to go a month without something that is usually in our everyday lives. I didn’t eat meat for a month, but it was cool to see what other people chose to do. We just gave it up for a month but for some people, this is how they live every day.
What’s the most important quality in a friendship? Why? I think loyalty because, even when you have ups and downs, you always have their back and you’re always there for them.
In 10 years, I will be… I want to be rich so I’d have no financial burden. I also want to live somewhere warm.
Who/what do you find inspiring? My big brother. He has been through a lot and it seems like he doesn’t ever catch a break, but he pushes through. He has wanted to be a rapper for a long time and keeps working on it every day.
What song summarizes your feelings about graduating from high school? Next Thing You Know by Jordan Davis.
What are your plans after high school? I’m going to take a gap year to work in a restaurant in Seattle. Then I’d like to go to college but I’m sure where yet and I’m not sure what I’ll study. I’m hoping to figure that out in the next year.
What is one important life lesson you learned in kindergarten? My first day of kindergarten, my dad got in a car accident on his way to meet me at school. I guess the lesson is, “You never know what’s going to happen in a day!”
