Belmont Elementary: A PAWSitive Place to Learn!
Listen. Do.
Our school-wide behavior goal right now is to BE a great Listener, then DO what needs to happen next. Listen. Do. Although this seems pretty simple, you might be surprised at how hard we have to work at it on the daily. While some children have well-developed executive functioning skills, others do not...yet. This makes self-regulation, awareness of surroundings, planning for action, and being socially aware of how one's own choices affect those around them negatively impacted. So we simplify. Here are our current Learning Targets for Listen and Do. The expectation would be that all students can independently, with minimal direction, be successful in each area.
Listen: I can listen for a quiet signal.
Do: I can stop when I hear a quiet signal.
Listen: I can listen with my whole body.
Do: I can turn and face the speaker.
Listen: I can listen when others are talking.
Do: I can take turns listening.
Listen: I can listen to directions.
Do: I follow the directions given.
Listen: I can listen for details.
Do: I can ask clarifying questions.
All of these steps are necessary in many school, home and other community settings to ensure that your child is able to function safely in their environment as a positive contributor to their own success as well as to the success of those around them.
Want to help your child from home? Practice these learning targets at home and when you are in the community as a family. Is your child really doing what you ask them to do? Are they listening to their siblings and friends? Celebrate all of the positives, and gently correct the mistakes. Every Bulldog can learn these skills to help our classrooms keep moving along smoothly. Being a great listener and doer shows that students are Ready to Learn!
Will Your BE Bulldog Be in the Bee This Year?
That's up to you as a parent! If you have a 3rd, 4th or 5th grader at Belmont, please talk with them about whether or not they'd like to be a participant in this year's spelling bee. We no longer conduct classroom spelling bees, but instead, have opened the bee to all students who live for and love to spell fun words! Mrs. Barcus, our spelling bee coordinator, will make sure that every child signed up by December 15th has a practice list in their hands by December 20. That will allow for plenty of practice time before Belmont Bee on Tuesday, January 16 at 2:00pm.
Our building champion will represent Belmont at the Johnson County Spelling Bee. So exciting!
If your 3rd-5th grade child would like to participate in the school bee, they are welcome to do so. Parents may opt-in their child using the form link below.
CLICK HERE to sign your 3rd, 4th or 5th grade word-loving student up for the school spelling bee by Friday, December 15!! Practice spelling lists will be sent home with students by Wednesday, December 20.
Our BE Spelling Bee will be held on Tuesday, January 16 at 2:00 pm in the cafeteria. Parents of spellers are welcome to attend!
