Art Class Highlight
Kindergarteners had fun making patterns of unique shapes by tracing their hands and overlapping them. This was a fun exercise in coloring and creativity.
Sixth grade is still working on their still-life drawing. They are turning out great so far. They have learned about shadow shapes, and next, they'll move on to rendering which is the final step.
Literacy Corner by Elise Farrell
This week, we are continuing our conversation how to determine which phonogram to use in a word! Lets take a look at two common phonograms, ai and ay. Both phonograms make the long /A/ sound, so how do we know when to use them?
Well, first and foremost, we know that English words do not end in the letter I, therefore, if we hear the sound /A/ at the end of a word, it cannot be ai, and must be ay (or ey, but we will discuss this phonogram at a later point). You will almost always find this phonogram at the end of a root word. For example:
Say
Day
May
Away
Clay
Stray
Dismay
Pay
Phonogram ai is used within the root word in place of ay. It very often comes before letters L, N, and R. For example:
Tail
Snail
Pain
Train
Hair
Fairy
Paid
There are a few more phonograms that make the /A/ sound, but as we learn their rules and the roots of the words, we can become confident in knowing which to use!
Book of the Week
Hatchet
By Gary Paulsen
This book is one that will have your teenagers on the edge of their seats! A favorite in middle school and even amongst high schoolers, Hatchet tells the story of a young man and his fight to survive after a plane crash leaves him stranded on a remote island.
