We had a great week at RHS! I've had the opportunity to visit several classrooms this week and I'm very excited about our student's level of enthusiasm for their classes. Teachers are setting high expectations for our students and students are motivated and curious, a recipe for success! A special thank you to the families that attended Back to School Night this week. RHS will be hosting a Financial Aid Night on October 18th - details will be sent out soon.

Here is a great resource for families regarding financial aid:

MEFA (Massachusetts Educational Finance Authority) will be presenting a series of Financial Aid 101 webinars. The presentations will provide a helpful overview of the entire financial aid process. Sub-topics will include financial aid applications and eligibility, types of financial aid, and how colleges determine the details of financial aid offers. We’ll also highlight key features of the new FAFSA debuting in December.

Families can view webinar dates and times and register at mefa.org/events/financial-aid-101. A Spanish option is available here, and webinars will be recorded and posted online for families who are unable to attend a live event (so sign up even if you can’t attend).

Rockland HS will be holding Saturday School from 9-12 this Saturday, September 16th. While student attendance is voluntary, improving your grades during Saturday School is a fantastic opportunity! Students should ask their teachers what they can make up during Saturday School and then be sure that work will be left with the teacher working Saturday School in that department.

We want to ensure that each student and parent/guardian of a student enrolled in an AP course is aware of the terms and conditions of enrollment in an AP course.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are university-level courses taught in high school, for which students have the potential to earn college credit. AP courses are designed to challenge students beyond grade-level academics and prepare them for success in future advanced academics. AP course requirements vary by subject - please refer to the specific course syllabus.

Academic Credit for AP Courses/AP Exam Required. AP level credit will be granted to students who successfully complete the required coursework AND take the related AP exam in May. Any student who passes an AP class but does not take the AP exam will receive “Honors” level credit for that class. This change will be reflected on the student’s academic transcript.

A student who is ill on the day of an AP exam must call the AP Coordinator by 7:00 a.m. that day or no make-up exam will be ordered. The school must also provide A doctor’s note to document the illness.

Student Withdrawal from an AP Course. Students may withdraw from AP courses without penalty, if withdrawal is submitted within one week of first term progress report distribution. AP students who withdraw from a course after that date will receive a grade of “W” on their academic transcript. Please note: student withdrawals may result in an inability to enroll in other replacement courses of choice.

All students are required to join their AP Classroom online - this is done through their College Board account. Join codes were provided by AP teachers. Students must complete this or AP exams cannot be ordered. If students have issues with joining or questions, they should see me.

AP Exam Order & Payment

An AP exam order form will be emailed to all AP students in early October. If a student has not returned their AP exam order form with full payment by the due date of Tuesday, November 7th, exams will not be ordered for that student (at which point his/her schedule and transcript will be changed to reflect Honors credit).

Exam fees are $100.00 per exam or $40.00 per exam for students on free or reduced lunch. If you aren’t sure of your lunch status, please email me. If there is an extenuating circumstance that prohibits a student from paying for AP exams by the deadline, they should speak with me.

Here are some tips for AP course success from the College Board.

RMS & RHS will offer a late bus available to students starting next week. The late bus will pick students up at 3:30 PM and depart at 3:40 PM outside the RMS Driveway. Students must be a registered bus students and have a signed pass from a teacher, with the address included on the pass. Teachers all have special bus passes. The late bus is available for registered bus students on Tuesdays & Wednesdays.

The Massachusetts Bar Association’s Mock Trial Program offers high school students, from across the state, an opportunity to test their skills as lawyers and witnesses in a simulated courtroom competition. Throughout the competition, students learn about the fundamentals of the American judicial system and how it can impact their lives.
