REFLECTION
Sunday's parable opens with two main figures. The first is a wealthy man dressed in fine linen and enjoying sumptuous meals. This is not the normal type of life for someone in the first century; this is who is part of the highest realms of the upper class.
The second man is opposite: homeless, diseased, and surrounded by dogs. In biblical times, dogs were not pets. They were scavengers, and their presence illustrates how hopeless the situation is.
The wealthy man could have helped the poor man, but he chose not to. Both men die and end up in opposite situations in the after life, but this time the poor man has blessings, while the rich man is in torment.
So far the parable has taught us three points. First, our actions in life have implications not only on earth but also after we die. Second, there is an afterlife that can bring peace or distress. Third, contrary to popular opinion of the time, one cannot determine one's relationship with God by one's material status.
As the parable ends, the father of the jews, Abraham, speaks to the rich man. Abraham tells him that his family will not be persuaded to take proper action toward the poor even if "someone should rise form the dead." This may seem like an odd phrase, but it is important for two reasons. First, the poor man's name is Lazarus. In John's Gospel, Jesus raises a man names Lazarus from the dead (see John 11:43-44). While this even brings many to faith, it causes others to want to kill both Jesus and Lazarus (see John 11:53; 12:10). Second, Jesus himself will rise from the dead, and people will not believe in Him. We know this is still true today.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Our WCEA preparation is well underway with a review of the Mission Statement and the SLEs. Surveys for Parents, Teachers, Students, and Clergy are currently being completed. Once the surveys are completed, a team will be reviewing the results for our main document write up.
School Family Mass – Our first School Family Mass for the year is Sunday, October 6th. Our sixth-graders are in the midst of preparing the Mass for that Sunday at 9am. We are encouraging all families within the school to attend the monthly School Family Masses.
Parent Survey - Thanks to everyone who has already completed the parent survey. There is still time to complete it if you have not already done so. We would encourage you to complete it at the Parent/Teacher interviews while you are waiting for your interview. We will have QR codes posted on the doors of the classrooms so that you can complete survey.
Parish Festival – A reminder that the festival is fast approaching and that all parents are committed to serve their hours over the festival weekend.
Halloween – Please remember only our assigned room parents will be allowed in the classroom with the students after the parade. If you are a room parent and you will be assisting with the Halloween parties it is a must to have been finger printed and have completed the Virtus online training per San Francisco Archdiocese guidelines. Contact Mrs. Cierra at info@ssfallsoulsschool.org if you have any questions.
Tardiness: New Policy – Tardy reports have been generated, and there are quite a few students who are habitually tardy. The optimum time of learning is in the morning and these students are missing out on key concepts. To combat this problem, we are instituting lunch time detention for those students who have three or more tardies. Every effort should be made to have children at school by 7:58 Monday to Thursday and 7:55 on Friday at the Church. There will be adjustments made in the Parent/Student handbook regarding the tardy section.
Parent/Teacher Conferences – Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held next week. I ask that you be here on time for our conference and stay within the 15-minute allocation.
Water Bubbler – We will be installing a water bubbler in the garden area for students when they have PE classes. It will make it easier for the PE teacher to send the students to the new bubbler than to go back to the locked school building. We will also be replacing the indoor corridor water fountains with new modern fountains.
Congratulations- Two of our second graders won prized in the SSFFD's Fire Prevention Art Contest. Congratulations to Austin Yee and Cheryl Ouyang for their wonderful posters.
SEE’s Candy fundraiser – You will be receiving information and order forms for See’s candy purchases for the holidays. We are offering this to you to assist you with your holiday gifts. Please complete the order forms and return to the office. – ENJOY!!! Please see attachment below.
God Bless,
Vincent Riener

Pacifica Beach Coalition's Coastal Clean Up
The 7th grade class had the opportunity to make a difference by participating in the Pacifica Beach Coalition’s Coastal Clean Up event.
The 7th grade group from All Souls Catholic School consisted of close to 20 dedicated students and parents. Our group helped out with restoring native habitat at the Linda Mar State Beach. This included everything from pulling weeds to spreading mulch. The site coordinator was very grateful for our assistance and was impressed with the work we all did that morning. The students received reusable metal straws as a token of appreciation for all of their hard work. We will be looking at participating in the upcoming Earth Day of Action event in April 2020. Please be on the lookout for more information.

BOX TOPS
Box Tops for Education was started by General Mills in California back in 1996, after the company decided they wanted to create a program to help support education and benefit America’s schools. All Souls has benefitted from this program over the years, receiving sports equipment, microscopes, and a variety of other educational items.
You can help by clipping the Box Tops off approved products you already have in your pantry. You don't need to clip the actual product UPC — just the Box Tops logo will do. From frozen foods to produce and household cleaning products, there are literally hundreds of opportunities to help, and each Box Top is worth 10 cents. Doesn't sound like a lot, but it adds up fast.
There are so many participating companies! Participating companies and product lines include General Mills, Green Giant, Totino's, Pillsbury, Old El Paso, Ziploc, Hefty, Juicy Juice, Betty Crocker and many more. For a full list of eligible items check the Box Tops for Education website at https://www.boxtops4education.com/earn .
Please see the flyer below for more details about new additions to the Box Tops program.
