If symptoms resolve (fever free for 24 hours and symptoms are improving), isolation ends after five full days (returns on day 6)
If symptoms persist (fever or other symptoms have not improved), school exclusion continues until fever-free for 24 hours, and other symptoms have improved.
Neither a Negative test nor medical note is required for a return.
If you're Positive for COVID and Asymptomatic
Excluded from school/activities for at least 5 full days (day 0 is the day of the positive test).
If no symptoms develop, isolation can end after 5 full days (returns on day 6)
If symptoms develop within one week of the positive test, the 5-day isolation period starts over with day 0 being the first day of symptoms.
If symptoms resolve (fever free for 24 hours and symptoms are improving), isolation ends after 5 full days (returns on day 6)
If symptoms persist (fever or if other symptoms have not improved), school exclusion continues until fever-free for 24 hours and other symptoms have improved
Additional Precautions For Those Returning from COVID+

If You Are A Close Contact - Quarantine
Who DOES NOT NEED to Quarantine?
Adults (excluded 18+ students) who have completed the primary series of COVID vaccines AND have received all recommended vaccine doses, including boosters*.
Students ages 5-18 who have completed their primary series of COVID vaccines (2-weeks post second shot).
Persons who had confirmed COVID within the last 90 days of a positive test.
*For the purpose of quarantine, someone is considered "boosted" upon receipt of the booster dose
Who DOES NEED to Quarantine?
- Staff who completed a primary series of COVID vaccines but have NOT received a recommended booster shot when eligible.
- Staff who have not completed the primary series of COVID vaccines.
- Students who have not completed the primary series of COVID vaccines.
During Quarantine
Excluded from school/activities for at least five days (day 0 through day 5) after the last close contact with a person who has COVID. The date of the exposure is considered day 0.
Individuals must be tested no earlier than day five after the last contact. The test can be PCR, Rapid, or home test and provided to the school nurse. This protocol goes beyond the NJDOH recommendations and will be revised when the current surge of cases subsides.
- If the test is positive, follow isolation recommendations
- If the test is negative, you can return on day 6 (no medical note needed)
What About Household Settings?
- If the test is positive, follow isolation recommendations
- If the test is negative, you can return on day 11 (no medical note needed)
If the person with COVID cannot stay away from others in the home, then the quarantine continues for an additional five days following the COVID+ person's isolation. Reminder, those fully vaccinated are not required to quarantine unless symptomatic.
