Celebrated Author TJ Klune Visits Shepaug
Shepaug Valley School was incredibly lucky to have author TJ Klune stop by and talk to students about his novel The House in the Cerulean Sea. TJ also took the time to meet with students to sign copies of the book and discuss details of his novels and creative inspirations.
Eighth Grade Leadership Field Trip
During the eighth-grade leadership education trip to Steep Rock, students worked to develop strengths as leaders and to increase their awareness of their own and others' leadership styles. The trip was part of a Leadership Education sequence for eighth-grade students that will include the selection of Spartan Ambassadors, and eighth graders who will serve as formal leaders of the middle school this year. This trip, on September 26th, was a joint effort of Shepaug Valley School and Outside Perspectives, a nonprofit organization.
Senior Project Spotlight
Cody Guldi - Lure Making
Cody Guldi was excited to start his Senior Project, because "it's a place where the sky is the limit" for students. His project is called "Lure Making," and for him, it's "a good opportunity to explore a different side of fishing," which is a longtime hobby of his. Cody plans to create a variety of lures, including making jigs and improving the durability of soft plastic. He will also explore 3D printing molds for soft plastics. He will be evaluating the lures based on how they perform in the field.
Aurora Wescott - Mortuary Science
Aurora Wescott is new to Shepaug this year. She says Senior Project "kind of scared me at first. I didn't realize how much of a big project it would be." She may be the first Shepaug student to design a project around mortuary science. Aurora will explore the different ways people plan for a funeral, including cultural variations and the process of embalming. She has already started interviewing professionals in the field and is eager to learn and share more.
Varsity Soccer Qualifies for States
Congratulations to the Shepaug Spartan Boys' Varsity Soccer team for qualifying for the CIAC State Tournament! Coach Jim Stinson is extremely proud of the balanced offense and defense as well as the level of teamwork and leadership during this fall season. Let's Go SPARTANS!!
From the Counseling Department
During this past month of September, we have had 16 college and university admissions representatives hosting information sessions in our College and Career Center (in the Library) for juniors and seniors. As students engage in the post-secondary planning process, these sessions allow them to learn about a variety of programs and ask questions directly to admissions representatives who review applications.
We will continue to host representatives throughout October and November. Students can view the schedule for college visits and register for the sessions through their Naviance accounts. Once registered, all students should get a pass from guidance prior to the session and check in with their classroom teacher for approval. If you have any questions about the visits, you may reach out to Mrs. Roush at roushl@region-12.org or your school counselor.
