Principal's Message- Reflecting on Meaningful Women in My Life
Dear Sandersville Families,
I have been fortunate to be surrounded by intelligent, motivated, and caring women throughout my life. Some of my earliest memories are ones of me sitting in the laps of both mamaws. When I was in elementary school, I remember seeing my mom meet her goal of visiting every house in Harrison County to ask for a vote for her as Circuit Court Clerk. Later that spring I saw tears of joy as she became the only female elected official for the county. As an educator, I have only had female supervisors and I owe so much to Jenny Dyar, Sandy Mefford, Julie Hawkins, Heather Bell, and Tiffany Marshall. They have pushed me and supported me in my role as principal. Finally, though we have a higher number of male staff members, over 85% of the Sandersville Staff are women and they do so much for our students and families on a daily basis.
Not even mentioning the impact of my wife and daughters, I owe so much to these powerful female influences. I love the fact our school and district celebrates Women's History Month. It is important for our students to know the perspective of women throughout history. This Friday, we will celebrate International Women's Day. We will wear purple to acknowledge and celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world.
Thank you for everything you do to support the success of our students at Sandersville. If assistance is ever needed, call the office at 859- 381-4980 or email matt.marsh@fayette.kyschools.us.
Sincerely,
Mr. Marsh, Sandersville Principal

PE Teacher and Author: Mr. Baxter
Dear Sandersville Families,
For years, my wife and I have dealt with the terrible disease Multiple Sclerosis. My lovely wife was diagnosed with MS 33 years ago. I have written a book about our journey through life and this disease. The book is titled 10 Dates Later : The Story of an MS Caregiver. If you know anyone struggling with MS, I hope this book will help. You can find the book on Amazon and it is available on Kindle. My wife and I are donating all of our proceeds from the book to the National MS Society. Thanks so much for your support.
Sincerely,
Mr. Baxter

Counselor Corner
Caring School Community:
Sandersville focuses on daily SEL (Social Emotional Learning) with our Tier 1 curriculum, Caring School Community. The program is designed to help children become caring, responsible members of their school communities and to grow into skilled citizens of a global society. It does so by:
Building caring relationships with and among students
Directly teaching social skills
Helping students acquire self-discipline through a caring and effective approach to discipline
Creating calm orderly learning environments through the use of effective classroom management practices
Ask your child what SEL topics they have learned about this year!
Monthly Character Focus:
Each class recognizes a student of the month who does an extraordinary job of portraying positive character traits. The following character traits are recognized: Respect, Responsibility, Empathy, Kindness, Teamwork, Fairness, Honesty, Cooperation, Integrity.
PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports)
What is PBIS? Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a comprehensive approach to implementing a positive and consistent student discipline system in schools. With PBIS kids learn about behavior just as they learn other subjects like math or science. PBIS is not a program or a curriculum. It is a team-based process for systematic problem solving, planning, and evaluation. The key to PBIS is being proactive in encouraging a positive school climate. It's also a way to have a school-wide approach in responding appropriately to misbehaviors in classroom and non-classroom settings. Sandersville implements research-based strategies to create a safe and productive learning environment where optimal teaching and learning can take place. Sandersville promotes positive behavior! Our schoolwide Guidelines for Success keep us focused on behavior expectations. We teach, model, practice and give feedback daily around these guidelines.
Students are recognized for positive behavior by class with Shark Smiles and individually with positive recognition certificates and quarterly behavior incentives. We use the FCPS code of Conduct to address misbehaviors and resolutions for individual incidents.
Technology Device Usage:
In a modern world we have the advantage of using continuously improving technological devices. It's important to remember to supervise your child, be aware of how they are using their device, and set healthy boundaries and rules. Commonsensemedia.org is a wonderful resource to get advice and tips on parenting and your child's technology usage.
DESSA:
Teachers will participate in the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA) on Monday, March 11th, 2024. The DESSA rating scale measures social and emotional skills that research has shown help students do well in school, at home, and in the community. Information gathered from the DESSA will be beneficial to your child's overall success inside and outside of the classroom.
Sample questions:
How often did the child keep trying when unsuccessful?
How often did the child offer to help somebody?
How often did the child get things done in a timely manner?
How often did the child work well in groups?
To learn more, or if you would like your child to OPT-OUT of this assessment, please visit the Elementary DESSA Information Page. If you would like your child to be included in the DESSA assessment, you do not need to do anything at this time. If you have any questions please contact the school's DESSA site lead, Ashlee Heeman, at ashlee.heeman@fayette.kyschools.us or by calling the school 859-381-4980.

Attendance, Excused Absences, and Education Enhancement Opportunity Reminder
With the start of the new semester, it is important to review the district policies around attendance and excused absences. The full FCPS Absence Policy can be found in the Student Code of Conduct that was sent at the beginning of the school year: https://www.fcps.net/conduct. Important points include:
- Any student arriving after 7:45 or leaving before 2:35 is considered tardy.
- Excuse notes should be turned in at the front office within three days of an absence.
- FCPS policy requires a physical note.
- Families of students accumulating multiple unexcused absences or tardies could have truant notices mailed by the FCPS Office of District Personnel (DPP).
Finally, Sandersville closely follows the guidelines outlined in the Education Enhancement Opportunity (EEO) form. Any approved EEO will need to very clearly meet all 3 criteria listed on the form:
- having an educational purpose
- having “significant educational value”
- including how the activity is directly related to one of the core curriculum subjects of English, science, mathematics, social studies, foreign language or the arts.
