February 2023-2024 Newsletter
Principal's Corner
Dear Ptarmigan Families,
2024 started out with an amazing pep assembly organized by our Student Council. During the assembly, they introduced our mascot C.A.R.L. the timber wolf. C.A.R.L. is part of new Missions statement which is:
“Inspiring all students to be Compassionate, Adaptable, and Resilient Life-long learners.”
We continued our busy month by celebrating our 2nd quarter success by holding our awards assembly. The hard work of numerous students were recognized.
A big thanks to those families that were able to attend our Family Literacy Night. We had several activities that support how parents/guardians can help their student increase their reading proficiency.
There is still time for families and/or community members take time to provide input on their child’s teacher or Ptarmigan administration. Please use the following link to provide feedback.

Administration from: https://www.asdk12.org/Page/14912
Please continue to remind your students to dress for the weather! Students in ASD go outside for recess until it gets colder than -10 degrees.
Let’s have an amazing rest of the quarter!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Ramey

NEWS FROM NURSE JULIE
As we move into February, I wanted to retouch on the topic of snow gear. With the recent lower temperatures and frequent moose visitors, there have been several days that we had a safety concern for recess outside. However, when temperatures allowed and outside was an option… many had fallen out of the habit of bringing snow gear or items had been misplaced.
Please check in with your child that they have all the necessary items: hats, gloves/mittens, heavy coats, snow pants, and boots. While we have extras in the health office, often there are too few pants or boots to provide items to many. In fact, if you have used (but in good repair) snow boots or athletic shoes in 4-10 (adult sizes), we would be happy to sort and put them to good use.
Additionally, I wanted to highlight an amazing service offered through ASD that can bridge the gap for those without alternative health insurance. School nurses in the district can open a visit with a Nurse Practitioner via telemedicine with parent permission (consent once for the school year). The visit can then pull insurance information that is available, or the service is free to those without coverage. This allows the school nurse to assist the care provider in diagnosing and prescribing – acting as eyes and ears – allowing prescriptions or referrals to be made during school hours. Parents have access to the provider notes, instructions, and recommendations. Additionally, the child’s designated primary care provider will receive a copy of the visit notes as well.
For more information, or to provide “pre-approval” to use this service when needed, visit:
https://sites.google.com/asdk12.net/healthcareservices/healthcare-services/telemedicine
As the school nurse, I would contact the parent/caregiver by phone prior when the illness or event might benefit with a tele-med visit – then the parent/ caregiver would then express approval or coordinate with their chosen provider. Please ensure that the office has the most current information and emergency phone numbers on file.
This may be an option for your family if you do not have a primary care provider, if securing an appointment is challenging, or if transportation is a burden.
Please let me know if you have any questions about the service!
This is an amazing resource for our students and families in need.
Sincerely,
Julie Craft DNP, APRN, FNP-C

~ Meet our Intermediate Resource Teacher, Ms. Mira Khu ~
Hello Timberwolves! I’m Mira Kristell Khu and most of my students calls me “Ms. Mira” or “Teacher Mira”. I’m from the City of Gentle People… Dumaguete City located in the Philippines. I am part of cultural exchange program for teachers from the Philippines. Teaching has always been my passion and I was once a little teacher to my classmates back in Elementary. Since my college days it has been my dream to practice my profession as a Special Education Teacher in Alaska. I really appreciate Alaska’s natural beauty and the locals living in it.
Previously, I worked at Kongiganak, a rural school located in Lower Kuskokwim for a year as Intensive/Resource Teacher for Pre-K to Senior High. Now, I am genuinely grateful to be part of Ptarmigan resource team. The Ptarmigan Admins, Staff and Students has warmly welcome me to be part of the school family.
On the other hand, I love animals! Back home I have one cat (Garfield), four dachshunds (Milo, Emily, Rocky, Muna), one Japanese Spitz (Pringles) and a bunny (Thumper). I recently got engage and will be living with two tuxedo cats (Sam and Dean) in the future. I love to cook food especially Filipino recipes and making some yummy sweets. I like to travel and learn different culture may it be food, language, and historic artifacts. I love to watch scary movies and I’m a Harry potter fan. If I have some time, I like to play PlayStation or Nintendo. Most importantly spending time with my family even though we are far apart.
As a teacher I always remind myself with this quote: “All kids need is a little help, a little hope and somebody who believes in them” by Magic Johnson. All kids are unique in their own, some kids’ improvement needs patience, kindness and the consistency of support will make them bloom in their right time
Hello from the Art Room! Youth Art Month is coming up March 1 – April 7th. Around Anchorage there will be several exhibits featuring student artwork from the Anchorage School District.
Youth Art Month
During the month of March, The Anchorage Art Museum, Loussac & Muldoon Library, 5th Ave Mall, and Ed Center will be hosting exhibits for Youth Art Month. Artwork created by students in the Anchorage School District will be displayed in each of their buildings. The kickoff event will be March 1st, 6-9 pm and the artwork will be displayed all month. It is a wonderful celebration of what students are creating around town. Four students from Ptarmigan will have their artwork included! I hope you take time to visit the exhibits, it is a wonderful display!

"Notes" from the Ptarmigan Music Room
Love is in the air! Music helps us express our emotions. Share music you love with your students this month. Help them actively listen to your favorite love songs.
On February 5th our fifth-grade classes will be attending “The Orchestra Moves” an interactive concert with the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra. They will be singing, playing, and moving with the Symphony. What a great opportunity for our fifth graders to create music with the orchestra.
Our fourth graders will begin working with recorders this quarter. They will be going on a musical journey with “Johnny Jazz”. Johnny Jazz is a comic book character who learns the recorder and helps save the world from Dr. Tritonian. I have a recorder for each student. I highly encourage each student to purchase their own recorder so they can practice at home. Yamaha, Angel, and Descant are all good brands. They should range from $9.00-12.00 each. You can purchase them on Amazon.com or locally at:

Third graders did a great job at their performance in January. They will continue to work on their singing voices as we add a unit on ukulele playing this quarter. Primary grades continue a playing, singing, and moving journey in the music room.
Choir practice has begun. Students are preparing for a comical presentation of “Lighten Up”. It is full of fun and funny songs. They will present it to the school and family on March 27th. Mark your calendars for this celebration of humor.
