NEWS FROM PHYSICAL EDUCATION!
Kindergarten
1st & 2nd Grade
First graders continue to make progress in all areas of class. The class was introduced to two scarf juggling and even progressed to three scarf juggling with a partner. A sea of colors filled the air as the scarves floated from the sky. In their striking unit, the students continue to work on volleying the balloon back and forth in small sided games. One day, I counted twenty-five volleys back and forth across the net. My head was spinning!
Second graders received an in-depth introduction into juggling scarves, beanbags, juggling sticks, and spinning yo-yo’s. They even learned to balance on a seesaw and juggle at the same time. The students also had the opportunity to play a 2 vs.2 game of paddle tennis against each other as they developed their ball placement and striking skills. Tennis Anyone?
3rd Grade
Our Third graders have continued to make giant steps in improving their jump rope skills throughout the year. Many of our students can now jump over 100 jumps in a row. The students are now playing modified volleyball and they are learning how to use a forearm pass to get the ball over the net. In the juggling unit, 3rd graders experimented with spinning plates, beanbags, clubs, balancing feathers, and a whole lot more!
4th Grade
The 4th graders really put their hearts into the Turkey Trot the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. All of the students felt so supported and it was incredible to see their hard work pay off. Fourth Grade classes are finishing up their volleyball unit and I have seen a tremendous amount of growth in just 2 weeks. Players are communicating with each other and their passes have come a long way. In November, juggling was a unit of study and the class discussed the origins of juggling and how it has developed over the centuries. The students also had the opportunity to participate in 7 different circus stations from around the world.
Things To Know
NO SCHOOL, WINTER BREAK BEGINS 12/25
Winter break begins 12/25; there will be no school for the week as well as on Monday, 1/1. School will resume on January 2nd.
GLOBAL CHILD SPRING REGISTRATION:
Please see the linked flier for information on Global Child, a program that introduces students to new languages. This program meets at Lilja after school once a week for ten weeks.
THOUGHTS ON THE HOLIDAY SEASON:
Our expectations around the holiday season are colored by our own fond memories, smiles on holiday cards, and Hallmark movies.
In truth, however, the joys of the season are paired with significant stressors for both adults and children. However, if we can adjust our expectations, preview expectations and new events, maintain important parts of the typical routines, and pay attention to their physical needs (real food, fluids, physical activity, and calming activity) then we can make the most out of all the opportunities this time of year brings!
WINTER IS COMING
A quick reminder that the weather is getting chillier each day! We will go out to recess in most weather conditions unless it is dangerous. Please help your child(ren) remember to bring/wear their cold weather gear to school each day, including a hat and gloves. When the snow arrives, in addition to hats and gloves, students will be required to wear snow boots and snow pants in order to play on the playground and fields. If you are in need of support in purchasing cold weather gear for your child(ren) please reach out to Courtney Simoni (csimoni@natickps.org).
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
At this time of year, we work to determine the number of children who will enter kindergarten at Lilja Elementary School for the coming school year.
Do you have a younger child at home or know someone who does? Will they be five years old by August 31, 2024? Are you a resident of Natick? If so, your child is eligible to start kindergarten this coming fall.
Please fill out the google form to let us know if you will enroll your child in kindergarten for the 2024-2025 school year by January 5, 2024.
