The Dragon's Tale
The Biweekly Newsletter of the Kaohsiung American School
2020-2021, Issue #15: March 29, 2021
Dear KAS Community,
Students have worked very hard this semester, alongside their teachers and families, and we are proud of their efforts. Students have accomplished many great achievements this term in academics, arts, and athletics! We are proud to feature KAS student athletes in this newsletter, and also provide some important updates about our school program. We also want to share a reflection about our time together overcoming this global pandemic.
The global story being told about Taiwan during the time of covid-19 is a story that all in Taiwan can be proud of - we have worked so hard and so well together to stay safe, keep learning, and keep living what feels mostly like a normal life.
At the same time, we need to start telling the ‘untold’ story of life in Taiwan during this time of pandemic. Even as we have stayed safe, within our community we have faced grief, loss, and the day to day uncertainty and anxiety just as in the rest of the world. It has been hard for all in our KAS community - students and families, faculty and staff, and our entire community.
It is important to recognize that even as we have come through this pandemic relatively well compared to the world, we are facing struggles as individuals, and also together as a community. This is a time when we can recognize and acknowledge the challenges that we face, and lean in to those challenges to uplift each other.
As we go off to Spring Break, we wish every member of the KAS community some rest and rejuvenation, and the chance to connect with family, friends, and loved ones. We aspire for the time ahead to be a positive time for the community, and we look forward to seeing students again on Monday, April 12.
Please enjoy this newsletter - it is full of great information about upcoming opportunities for parents within the school, updates and information from our College Counseling department, an update about our IB efforts, and a celebration of our student athletes.

What is Service Learning and why is it important?
Service Learning is an educational approach where students learn skills while tackling real-life issues in the community. IB requires service learning in all of its programs, and although as of yet, service learning has not been a focus at KAS, that is about to change as KAS hires its first Service Learning Coordinator and sets about to bring the entire KAS community together in the implementation of a strong, research-based Service Learning Program in both Middle School and High School.
What student aspects does IB want to develop through a Service Learning Program? These student aspects include undertaking challenges that develop new skills, discussing and planning student-initiated activities, collaborating with others, developing international-mindedness through global engagement, and becoming more aware of their own strengths and needs for growth. Student service learning projects will begin in the younger years with much adult guidance and monitoring, and as students mature and develop the necessary skills, students will initiate, plan, develop and monitor local and global community service projects.
More information about KAS’s Service Learning Program will be made available as students, staff, and community make progress. Comments and questions can be directed to Deborah Haines (dhaines@kas.ts)

We are in the final weeks of college admissions decisions - congratulations to our Seniors on so many acceptances! We will be finalizing a list of Class of 2021 acceptances and where students intend to enroll to share with our community later this spring. On April 28, the last day of classes for Seniors, we will honor our Class of 2021 for College Day in recognition of National Declaration Day. Seniors are invited to wear college t-shirts or hoodies of their choice and we will be celebrating them with cake during the high school break.
Please note that most schools will ask you to make a deposit as a confirmation of your commitment to enroll, typically no later than May 1. Check your admission offer carefully so you do not miss an important deadline to deposit. After you have been accepted and decided upon a university, you will need to notify the other universities via your student portal or however they have instructed you in the offer letter. You will be required to pay a deposit as a sign of commitment. The amount of this deposit varies from school to school and country to country but is typically $250 - 500 for the U.S. or up to $2,000 - $5,000 for Japan.
Double-depositing, where you accept admission and pay a deposit at two schools is not allowed. A final transcript will only be sent to the school where you decide to enroll.
If you are offered admission from a school where you were waitlisted after May 1 and you would like to accept that offer, you must notify the original university that you are withdrawing your commitment to enroll, and then make a deposit at the school offering you a spot. Your deposit will not be refunded.
Once you have been offered and have accepted a place at a university, you will go through the
process of obtaining a visa to study for the country wherein you plan to attend university. Visa
costs vary by country but can range from $0 to $550 USD. Universities are able to provide
guidance with the visa process; contact your admission officer for support and details. Make sure to get started immediately on the visa application. Universities in the UK may require a specific english proficiency test for the purposes of applying for a visa, called the iELTS UKVI. The U.S. and other countries have very detailed, specific requirements for visa eligibility that typically involve in-person interviews, fees, bank statements, photos, documents from your university, etc.
If you hold a valid passport for the country where you plan to study, you do not need to apply for a visa.

Class of 2022 Notes: Teacher letters of recommendation are a highly valued and important aspect of the university application process. Students should carefully select 2 teachers to write letters of recommendation, and it is suggested that students choose teachers who have taught them during G11. Some universities will allow an additional 1 - 2 recommendation letters. For UK schools, typically only 1 referee letter is required. Some schools do not require any teacher letters of recommendation at all - for example, Arizona State, University of California schools, and Purdue University. Most importantly, select teachers who know you very well and can speak to your academic potential and character.
Arizona State, University of California schools, 和 Purdue University。
In spring of your junior year, it’s time to start thinking about and planning your college essay or personal statement. College counselors will hold several workshops and writing sessions specifically for students preparing their college applications. English teachers will also work on the craft of writing, personal narrative techniques, and essay writing to help students write strong essays. Multiple resources and guides are also available for students to reference online and in the college counseling library. For most applications, the essay is about 600 - 650 words (4000 characters for UK applications).
