The following tip will be helpful to parents of English learners who are supporting their children's learning at home. The amount of English the parents speak does not matter, as long as they can listen and discuss the newly discovered words with their child it will help to increase the child’s English language skills.
Create a Book of “English Words I Am Discovering”
Have students create a book at home to keep up with all of the new English words that they are introduced to in their classrooms. If you look through this book together it will help your child retain and learn the words to discuss their meaning in both English and in your native language. Help your child to find the like word (cognates) in your native language to compare it to the newly discovered English word.
Review the words by practicing both the spelling and definition and discussing the native language words they are similar to.
Practice using the words in a sentence or telling stories that week that use the new vocabulary, maybe find a story or video online that uses the vocabulary and discuss it with your child .
Use the words to play literacy games, such as hangman or charades.
To help them associate the new words with meaning, have them illustrate pictures to go along them as they add them to their book.
