Dear Friends
June 21, 2022
We hope you have a terrific summer!
Cascade View Elementary retires mascot
Andrew Gobin, Treaty Rights Policy Analyst for the Tulalip Tribes, and his family were present at an all-school assembly on the last day of school at Cascade View Elementary where they respectfully retired their school mascot – the Thunderbird – in Native American tradition.
Background: In late 2021, the school district began its work to align district practices of naming schools, including their mascots, with new state legislation to honor the rights, sovereignty, and dignity of First Nations, Indigenous, Native American cultures, tribes, and heritages. Specifically, for Cascade View Elementary the new law indicated that there shall be no use of Native American themed images, symbols, myths, cultural artifacts, or iconography that either proved to be derogatory, disrespectful, or denigrating. Consultation with area tribes to seek guidance and/or consent was also an important component of the law.
At Cascade View Elementary, since its inception as an elementary school in the district, they’ve been known as the Thunderbirds - an iconic and powerful mythological symbol within many Native American cultures, including those of the Pacific Northwest. In early 2022, Cascade View Elementary began its process of eliminating all use and images of the Thunderbird in its school and on its campus. With intentionality, they turned this process into a series of teachable moments for students, staff, and community as it presented for them an exciting and unique opportunity to re-define an identity through the discovery of a new school mascot.
In March, Cascade View Elementary students were charged with the direction of submitting their ideas, along with their reasons why, of the mascot they believed their school should adopt. 120 students submitted 81 mascot names (many were duplicates). In April, a committee was formed consisting of students, parents/guardians, and staff to review all submissions with the intent of “discovering” their new school mascot.
The committee engaged in processes to surface a mascot that represented a sense of pride, passion, learning, enthusiasm, curiosity, courage, and youthful fun! Cascade View Elementary is excited to share that moving forward they will now be known as the Cubs!

- Facebook - Today, 10,000 Facebook fans receive regular district updates through our district's Facebook page - www.facebook.com/snohomishschooldistrict. This site is just one of many ways we communicate with our students, staff, families and community. Although we are aware of other Facebook pages, please note that this is the only verified Facebook page of the Snohomish School District and is where official information is posted.
- School Messenger - Our district uses the School Messenger automated system as a tool for communication with our parents, families and staff. School Messenger works with the district’s student-data system (Skyward/Family Access) to notify families and staff through phone and/or email of emergencies, critical school and district messages, school/district closures, inclement weather, attendance issues, underfunded student meal accounts and other events/activities. The overall goal of using this service is for parents and families to receive critical information about Snohomish schools - especially information that affects their children - in a timely manner. As long as we have accurate primary phone numbers and email addresses on record for our students in Skyward/Family Access, families should automatically receive these messages when they are sent out.
