The Llewellyn "Friday" Flyer
October 12, 2023
Dear Families,
At Llewellyn we believe in Building Community and this means supporting our community in both the good times and in times of strife. The recent attack on Israel has us all reeling, but we know that many of our community members are affected by this violence at an even greater scale as harm and fear for the lives of loved ones is palpable. Please know that our staff, counselor, Miss Brittany, and our mental health professional, Miss Cassie can offer sensitive trauma informed care for your child if needed.
I also want to pass along a few resources from the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland that may help you to support your child during this time:
SUPPORT SUGGESTIONS AND RESOURCES:
Responding to antisemitism in the schools: Who to contact in Portland
“Helping Children Cope After a Traumatic Event" which can be found Here in English. For those of you with Israeli families, a Hebrew-speaking guide is Here
ADL’s guide on having family conversations about difficult topics: https://www.adl.org/education/resources/tools-and-strategies/table-talk
For Jewish parents struggling with how to talk to their children about what is happening in Israel, here is a guide broken down by ages: https://www.kveller.com/how-to-talk-to-kids-about-whats-happening-in-israel-right-now/
Sincerely,
Principal Pam

Welcome Julia Montejo!

What I like about Llewellyn
My name is Julia and I am one of the 2nd grade teachers at Llewellyn this year. I have been teaching for 8 years and spent most of those years at Atkinson Elementary before coming here to Llewellyn. I have really enjoyed being part of the Llewellyn community and am looking forward to learning more about the community, students, families, and sharing my love of old music and ukulele with my students. Outside of work I live at home with my husband and 2 and a half year old daughter (and a 3 year old black lab, named Georgia). I like to spend time baking, swing dancing, playing music, and traveling abroad. I am also an avid reader and will finish a new book every week. I am excited to be part of the Llewellyn team!

News from the PTA
Welcome back everyone!
PTA Happenings
What a lovely weekend it was! It felt like summer for a few days and we hope you all took advantage as much as possible. There were so many soccer games and pumpkin patch visits from what we heard. And on Saturday several Llewellyn families showed up for our Harvest Festival. A HUGE thank you for the many hands that made light work assembling 15 raised garden beds; it was a monumental undertaking. A dozen volunteers made the day a success with crafts, pumpkins, activities, refreshments, and community cheer. The biggest garden lift is done, but there are smaller work parties in the garden over the next few months to finish the space. Email Renee at Reneecbwilkinson@gmail.com if you want to stay in the loop.
Our annual PTA Charleston Wrap fundraiser is still going strong! Don’t forget to stock up on wrapping paper for all your holiday gift giving, and get some really nice gifts for all those people on your list. We’ve earned just $2,000 and we still have over a week left! If you haven’t already, register your participant online by going to registercw.com and enter our Organization ID 11592. Our top three sellers will win a gift wrap bundle and students will accumulate prizes based on the amount of sales they bring in. The deadline for the sale is October 20. If you have questions about registration or are having site issues. please contact parent volunteer Kili Fern at kiliandethan@gmail.com
Gear has been ordered! We are hoping to get it to you the week of October 23. Once we receive the order we will inventory and then bag them up for each family and send them home with your student.
Volunteer Opportunity!! We have two wonderful opportunities for you to get involved in our amazing Llewellyn PTA. We are in immediate need of a volunteer to head up the volunteer committee chair on our board. This person would be in charge of overseeing all committees and making sure they have volunteers to head up events and to navigate Konstella in order to communicate with committee chairs, create signups and post announcements. The second is the lead committee chair for our Read-a-thon fundraiser in January. We are still building this new committee and look forward to sharing the details soon. Please email llewellynpta@gmail.com if you are interested in being a part of either of these positions. You would have full guidance and support from our board and we look forward to working with you to help our students to continue to get the resources and support that they need in the classroom.
We have a PTA meeting coming up on October 17 at 7 p.m. in our Llewellyn library. We are hosting a speaker from Moms Demand Action, a gun safety organization and Ms. Caroline Coholan, 3rd grade teacher, will give us an update on the teacher negotiations. We will also be discussing our budget and some projections we have for programs going forward. We will have a raffle for vintage Llewellyn gear for Llewellyn families and community members who join us. Please join so we can hear from our community. We love to hear your feedback and ideas on how to make PTA even better.
Any room leads or parent volunteers that want to learn about how to use all the machines and resources available to PTA around the school can come early at 6:30 and we will have someone here to give you a quick tour and show you how to utilize them.

Empoderando Familias (Empowering Families)
Upcoming Event - Empoderando Familias (Empowering Families)
This free Spanish language event represents a collaboration between all three counties in the metro area and Portland Public Schools. Empoderando Familias is focused on giving Spanish speaking families access to information about parenting for prevention of substance use. Strategies that are going to be highlighted include how to advocate for yourself in English speaking systems, setting boundaries for your kids that help them to grow up healthy, and how to maintain relationships and connections through the teen years. The event will also cover information about commonly used substances among youth. The Multnomah County event location is McDaniel High School. See this FLIER for more details!

GO WARRIORS!!
From the Llewellyn Cafeteria
Just a heads up that Tuesday 10/10/2023 was the last day of the 30-day grace period for meal applications. Families can submit a meal application online any time via SchoolCafe (www.schoolcafe.com/pps or download the mobile app) or use a paper application (available from the office). However, online is the quickest way to apply. Applications will be processed using the date received so the sooner we get them, the better. I encourage all Households to submit a meal application as income guidelines for Oregon are much higher than the Federal income guidelines.
What happens if a meal application is not submitted or is denied?
If students on the grace period purchase a meal, meal charges would begin Wednesday 10/11/2023 and onward.
Families can prepay for school meals via cash, check, or online via SchoolCafe (5% fee).
Families can bring meals from home or purchase meals elsewhere.
If circumstances change where they meet the income guidelines, they can submit a meal application any time during the school year.
How does the Oregon EIG Reimbursement Program work?
Oregon Department of Education (ODE) reimburses participating schools for the reimbursable breakfasts and lunches they serve at no charge to students from households with incomes greater than 185 percent, but not more than 300 percent, of the federal poverty level.
Once again, I encourage all Households to submit a meal application. Income guidelines for Oregon are much higher than the Federal income guidelines.
