President's Message
Happy Fall,
October is here and conference is right around the corner. If you haven’t registered yet I encourage you to do so. We have a great line-up of speakers, you will be able to get your geriatric continuing education plus you will be on the beautiful river walk in San Antonio. In addition, we have vendors that are very excited to share their expertise with you. The hotel we have booked is beautiful and currently receiving a facelift. They hope to be finished with the majority of the work by our conference. They have given us a special room rate. TSNO has had to guarantee a certain number of reservations so please, when booking your room, ask for the TSNO block.
The Texas Education Agency has still not made a decision about the training required by HB 684. They have until December 1st. We will be sure and let you know as soon as we hear something.
As the weather starts to cool down and the students get in the groove of school it is time for you, the school nurse, to really shine. With your screening not only can you identify student’s with visual and hearing problems but you will see them face to face and be able to identify other potential problems. This is my favorite time of the year. They can see who their school nurse is and you can show kindness and caring to each student as you screen them.
By now you have probably identified who some of your ‘frequent flyers’ are. Just remember, they are there for a reason. It may not be a physical health issue but for some reason they feel safe coming to you. I encourage you to not think of them as ‘frequent flyers’ but to try to get to the real reason they are seeking you out. It may be something as simple as you were kind to them once and they feel the need for that again. It is so easy to get caught up in everything that we have to get accomplished that sometimes I forget to just be kind.

Power of the Purse
Power of the Purse is TSNO's state conference fundraiser. This year we are establishing the TSNO Disaster Relief Fund. This fund will provide assistance to nurses that have experienced a natural disaster.
Purse Donation: To make the silent auction process run smoothly, we will be collecting information electronically on your donations. Please go and "Sign up". You will have the opportunity to give a description and value of each purse.
Please bring your purse for donation to the conference registration desk upon check-in.
Supporting Students with Diabetes
The evidence is clear that early control of diabetes contributes to better health outcomes. It also contributes to better attendance and readiness to learn. Diabetes is one of the most common metabolic diseases in children. According to the CDC (2017), the incidence of diabetes in children and youth in the United States is approximately 193,000 and with Type 1 increasing. As a member of TSNO/NASN you now have access to a FREE and valuable diabetes resource. NASN has collaborated with the American Association of Diabetes Educators to make DANA (Diabetes Advanced Network Access) available for members. DANA is a website resource that allows school nurses to access information about diabetes technology, webinars, device training and much more. Begin your discovery today in shaping the future of diabetes care for your students.

REMINDER!!
Sunny Thomas Memorial Award deadline is fast approaching! All applications must be postmarked no later than October 15th. The purpose of this award is to promote continuing education for the school nurse. It provides up to $1000 stipend for one Texas school nurse to attend the NASN conference.
