Educator for the Future PD Day

New teachers will meet at MIS/HPMS and continue their learning from the August New Teacher Academy, also focusing on the Educator for the Future profile. Teachers will be divided into elementary and secondary groups and have a half-day of Designer of Instruction training, including a student panel. The other half-day will be focused on Marzano's work as a Skilled Assessor. New teachers have been pre-registered for their sessions. They will receive a separate New Teacher Academy email.

All HPISD paras-professional and professional staff will meet at HPHS for their Educator for the Future PD Day. The day has been planned to help educators grow in their knowledge and skills focusing on the attributes of the Profile of the Educator for the Future. Our goal is for all sessions to align with the following attributes listed in our Profile of the Educator for the Future.

HPISD educators are

• academically prepared,

• designers of instruction and facilitators of learning,

• skilled assessors and

• critical and innovative thinkers.

Clerical staff will have the opportunity to participate in workshops and sessions designed to meet the needs of their work. Clerical staff will receive a separate email from Judye Gremm with information about their sessions and registration instructions.

3. Go to “Workshop”.
4. Select “Course Registration”.
5. Select “View Courses by Category” where you will find A Learning Day - January 19, 2016 courses listed. Click on the laptop icon .
6. Select your 8:45 Break-out Session.
7. Choose the “Register” option at the top of the listing.
8. Return to “Course Registration”.
9. Select your 10:30 Break-out Session by following steps 5-8.

• Listen and Learn - Primarily a one-way interaction between presenters and audience.

• Lecture - Presentation with one or more presenters addressing a seated audience.

• Panel - Presentation with a designated moderator facilitating a discussion among two or more panelists on a particular topic.

• Participate and Share - Moderated interaction either between presenters and audience or among participants.

• Interactive Lecture - Lecture featuring audience participation and interaction with the presenters during the session, such as collaborating on a document, creating a web 2.0 project or participating in a presenter-led backchannel, poll or other activity.

• Explore and Create - Extensive interaction between presenters and audience.

• Hands-on Workshop - Hands-on sessions that provide for more personal, in-depth exploration of a particular topic, tool, or resource in a smaller group environment.

• Bring Your Own Device - Session focused on exploring new resources or developing new skills through extensive hands-on activities using participant's own devices.

• Twitteriffic - Teachers will create a Twitter account and participate in various tasks so that, by the end of the session, they will have an understanding of how to use Twitter to grow a PLN. Twitteriffic will be offered during Session 1 and Session 2.

• Amazing Race - Teachers compete in teams as they complete challenges to receive additional clues and continue in the race. Prizes will be awarded. Amazing Race will be offered during Session 1 and Session 2.

• Learning Cafe - Demonstration-style presentation delivered in an open, multi-booth environment that enables presenters to engage their audience in more intimate one-on-one and small group conversation. Instructional materials vendors will be invited to participate in the Learning Cafe.

• Swap Shop - A Swap Shop is an interactive workshop that fosters the sharing of ideas and practices. The Swap Shop is designed for staff to take a few minutes to informally share interesting teaching, learning and assessment practices. It also enables participants to swap ideas associated with the theme of ‘The Educator for the Future’ and engage in opportunities to ask and answer questions. Ideally, you will share your ideas, get some insights into how your idea could be improved and also pick up a few more ideas for inclusion in your teaching. Topics will be shared prior to January 19.

Donalyn Miller has taught upper elementary and middle school students in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and was a finalist for 2010 Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year. In her popular book, The Book Whisperer, Donalyn reflects on her journey to become a reading teacher and describes how she inspires and motivates her middle school students to read 40 or more books a year. In her latest book, Reading in the Wild, Donalyn collects responses from 900 adult readers and uses this information to teach lifelong reading habits to her students. Donalyn currently facilitates the community blog, The Nerdy Book Club and contributes to Scholastic Book Fairs’ Reader Leader. Her articles about teaching and reading have appeared in publications such as Education Week Teacher, The Reading Teacher, Educational Leadership and The Washington Post.

Mark Fontenot is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the Lyle School of Engineering, and he is the Founding Faculty-in-Residence of Loyd Residential Commons at SMU. He serves as Director of First Year Engineering Design program in the Lyle School. His research interests are in the area of engineering education focusing on the measurement of individual innovative behavior and fostering the creative and innovative capacity of undergraduate engineering and computer science students. In addition to teaching and research, Professor Fontenot has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards at SMU including the inaugural recipient of the Provost’s Teaching Award (2013) and the Rotunda Professor of the Year Award (2012).

HPISD Teachers - Many of our break-out sessions are offered by our own HPISD teachers and administrators who will share instructional strategies and innovative practices used in their classrooms. We appreciate these willing volunteers who are making a huge contribution to the success of this day.
