Principal's Message
Hello Springwater Community,
October is here and we are wrapping up our first 6-week grading period this week. And it is a unique week: no late start this Wednesday due to the PSATs and there is no school on Thursday or Friday October 11th and 12th.
Our 6-week grading periods are the perfect time to check in with your student about their academic progress. For students who are failing courses, we will reach out to parents to problem-solve and create a plan to get academically back on track.
New this year: Progress reports are no longer mailed out. You can access your student’s progress report through StudentVue/ParentVue. If you’d like a paper copy, please contact the office and we will mail it to you (or you can swing by the office to pick it up). For more information, including a link to ParentVue, see “Report Cards Online” in this issue of Titan Times.
Student Course Progress Guide is here: We have finalized a quick reference guide that aims to answer the critically important (but often confusing) question: Where and how do I find information about my student’s academic progress? The addition of Google Classroom over the past several years has been a wonderful tool for teachers, students, and parents. However, it has also created confusion, at times, when students and parents try and locate student academic progress information. For example, when should a parent look in Synergy ParentVue/StudentVue and when is it best to look in Google Classroom? The guide will help point parents and students in the right direction so they can efficiently and accurately stay on top of their student’s grades and assignments. We will be discussing and referencing this document at November conferences but we wanted to share it out with you as soon as it was ready to go. Feel free to use it or disregard it. If you have questions about it, please feel free to email or call the main office. The link to the guide and additional information can be found within this issue of Titan Times.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your student’s teachers, the main office, or me by phone or email if you have questions or concerns. We are here to support you and your student.
Sincerely,
Ryan Blaszak

Financial Aid Night
On Thursday, Oct 11th at 6:30pm we are having a Financial Aid night at Springwater Trail High School. We will be in the computer lab answering questions and helping you fill out your student's FAFSA. FAFSA stands for "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" and is a critical step to ensuring your student has access to all the government aid (grants, work study money, and loans) available for post-secondary education.
In order to be fully ready for this evening, your seniors will be asking you for their social security number so they can complete the FSA ID #, which needs to be completed prior to completing the FAFSA. The FSA ID # is an electronic signature verifying the student's name matches the submitted social security number. We also ask that you bring your 2017 taxes for easier filing.
If you are a parent of a middle college senior, I will be sending you an additional email, explaining the step you need to take to be ready for Thursday.
We want to provide you with the all the support you need to complete your FAFSA. If you have questions or concerns, please email Linda Centurion at centurion@gresham.k12.or.us or call 503-261-4611.
Attention Senior Parents
Senior Parents Needed
For Parents
Mediocrity and risky behavior may have become more the norm for today's adolescent, but there are things parents can do to nurture their children’s commitment to a positive life path.
Academic Support Mondays, Tuesday, and Wednesdays
Additional academic support is available at Springwater Trail High School, on Mondays and Tuesdays from 2:30pm-3:30pm. This additional time will allow students to utilize school resources such as the library and student computers for homework, studying, reading, etc.
Transportation home at 3:30 is available on Mondays but students MUST sign up in the office prior to noon on Mondays to receive a ride home.
Students will need to have their own transportation home on Tuesdays.
Wednesday school is also available every week and we encourage students to utilize this time to meet with their teachers, retake quizzes, and get homework help. Transportation home at 3:30 is available but students MUST sign up in the office prior to noon on Wednesdays to receive a ride home. If you have questions regarding after school support, please call the office at 503.261.4600.
Fall Festival - October 26th
Immunization Report
The State of Oregon now requires schools to notify parents of their immunization exemption rates for each required vaccine. These rates will now be posted on our school’s website, in our school office and sent home to parents twice a year. The rates attached are the exemption rates as of last spring. Schools are required to publish this information twice each school year. Approximately the second week of March we will post the updated rates. These new rates are collected and tallied in mid February.

If the student is going to be out more than three days, you can call the office or email your student's teachers with a request for homework. If your student is going to be out of school for extended period of time due to a vacation or some other event, please have him/her complete a Pre-arranged Absence Form. Looking Back at Our Graduates
Neva Ryan
What are your plans for this year: Going to Mt Hood Community College working on getting a transfer degree to Western Oregon. Also working in the book store at MHCC.
What do you miss about STHS: The community and the "smallness of the school"
Advice you would give current STHS students: Your grades really do matter for all 4 years of High School. If you are wanting to go to a 4 year college make sure you focus on your grades. Your grades will determine if you will be accepted to a 4 year college.
Kendra Giard
What are your plans for this year: Currently working and trying to find a job in a trade that would suit me best.
What do you miss about STHS: The people and the teachers. They are all so friendly and helpful.
Advice you would give current STHS students: Don't slack. Once you slack you cant get back very quickly.
Aaron Whistler
What are your plans for this year: I'm planning to continue attending the Oregon Institute of Technology, where I'm working towards a Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering. Hopefully by the end of the year I can start looking into internships in the tech industry.
What do you miss about STHS: I miss the teachers. OIT has great professors that are very skilled in their fields, but they often move quickly through material, and it is harder to get individual attention. It is more possible to ask questions during lectures here than other colleges, but I miss the ability to come into a class almost any time I need something and having someone to help me.
Advice you would give current STHS students: Don't just breeze through classes or jump through the hoops of high school. That strategy works to get good grades, but it is terrible when you actually have to apply what you learned. Just because you ace a test or an assignment does not mean you will always be able to. The things you are learning in high school may not seem important now, but every subject you take in high school teaches a skill that is very useful in higher education, and it will save so much time and energy learning it now while you have the resources and staff there to help you versus relearning it in college on top of the other difficult things you need to master. This is true for all of the classes you take in high school, not just the ones you think will apply to what you want to do after high school.
If you're planning to go to college, make sure you pick a degree that applies to many fields that you're interested in. If you try to overspecialize in one place, and find that you either don't like it or that there aren't enough job openings, you will end up wasting both time and money. If you pick a degree that applies to many career paths, you open up so many opportunities for yourself, and you'll have much more freedom in what you end up doing. Instead of thinking of majors as a direct stepping stone into a specific job, think about a major as a dive into a pool. You can dive into a shallow pool or a deep pool, but if you dive into a shallow pool then you will hit the bottom and have no where else to go.
Electronic Flyers
Gresham-Barlow Distict has launched a new electronic flyer tool called “Peachjar.” This service allows us to “go green” and will ensure that every flier is delivered to each household. Peachjar will provide flyers directly to your computer, tablet or mobile device.
To view school-approved flyers, simply click the Peachjar button on your school’s website.
