Adversity -- no one wants it, but we all get it.

This year has been really great at teaching us lessons in dealing with adversity. The year has been difficult from the start and has not let up as we work to get our school and our students back on track. No one wants the adversity we are experiencing, but adversity does not care if we want it or not...it is here.

I know for sure that If we stop now, everything we have done up to this point has been for nothing. Even Seneca, the first-century stoic philosopher, recognized the role that adversity plays in our life: "Fire is the test of gold; adversity, of strong men."

Adversity testing our strength is a timeless truth. Humankind has dealt with, and been tested by, adversity since the beginning of time. Those who show strength in the midst of adversity have the opportunity to become great. Those who run from adversity are names that no one remembers. Adversity will always be there. We have handled it well during the first half of the year. How we handle this year will define our strength as a school!

Week 16: Grateful Friday Challenge

DECEM-WHAT??? I feel like when we get to this part of the school year, and we should have a firework-like celebration; perhaps the holiday lights count- and I should count my blessings. We’ve done it. We’ve made it to the last month of the semester. We are about to flip the calendar to 2022 and leave the craziness of 2021 behind. I think we have learned a lot of lessons in the past two years, a lot about teaching and education, a lot about students and empathy and apathy, and a lot about ourselves. We technically only have one more Friday with students after today, and honestly, it feels like December would never get here, but here we are. That in itself is something to celebrate.

It feels like when we get into this time of year; we go into turbo mode - we rush and rush, we try to cover one last topic, we try to make one last push to get kids a credit, we are on high alert for the hi-jinx that comes with teaching (or at this point rangeling) high schoolers. Sometimes we forget that in all the craziness that this time of year brings, some positives and wins happen along the way.

Today, let’s focus on, and celebrate, those positives as we begin to wind down the semester! Before you leave today, your #SHSGFC is to write down or make a mental list of 7-73 things that you did well this semester (obviously, if you have more than 73, keep going). There have been struggles, but there have also been important reasons to celebrate. It is essential to pay attention to all the good things that we make happen each day. Sometimes taking the time to notice the small things can make the most significant difference in our attitudes and lives!

Ms. Kohne's English 10 students are reading Shakespeare's, Julius Ceasar. Students are working their way through each Act and Scene of the play ensuring they understand what they are reading. As they listen to the play being read out loud, the class stops periodically to explain and discuss what is happening in the play.

Ms. Ancelet's Speech students are preparing for their final speech of the semester. The final speech of the semester is a persuasive TEDTalk. Students try to persuade their classmates about a problem, its cause, and a solution. Students Are beginning their research process and spent time in class talking about how to use formal research databases rather than just "Googling" sources.

Our School Counselors held a FAFSA Night on Wednesday evening to support students and families in completing the FAFSA. Experts from UIndy, INVestED, and our interpreters were on hand to assist during the night's activities. We had one of the best turnouts ever for this night!

The journey of the next football season begins how in Coach Frank's varsity football weights class. Students are working to get stronger throughout the remainder of this school year to prepare themselves for next year's season. Students are working to hit targets and measure their growth each class period they meet.

Mr. Coffman's Algebra students are beginning to work on systems of equations. Students have practiced graphing equations and now are practicing their math skills working through systems of equations where they are solving by subtraction. Students had time in class to practice their skills, ask questions, and get the help they needed to be successful.
