Newsletter - Week 7 Term Two

Dear Parents,

Well, what a wet week we have just had, and also with this colder weather we have had many of our children home sick with colds, flu, sore tummies etc. If your child is unwell please keep them at home.

We still have our hygiene protocols in place with children sanitising as they enter the school and when they enter their classrooms. Children in years 4, 5 and 6 are still wearing masks when indoors. If your child gets Covid or someone in the household does, please let us know.

The Young Vinnies had the finals of their St Mary’s Talent Quest on Monday. Congratulations go to Klara Konyves (1)James Alemann & Indie Fraser (2) and Kieran Groves (3). Thanks to Mrs Todd and the Young Vinnies team for organising this great event.

The Rippa Rugby Tournament was played today, having been postponed twice.

Our Year 5/6 team was placed second, and our Year 3/4 team was placed third. These teams now qualify for the Bay trials.Thanks to Jill Dinnis for coaching/managing the Rippa teams. Thanks to all the parents who helped today too.

The Interschool Cross Country was held yesterday at the Springfield Golf Course. Congratulations to these students who gained placings in their age groups:

Mateo Parra Rodriguez (2) Xavier Parata, (4) Louis Mathis, (7) Alana Thomson(7).

Thank you also to Mr G for taking the team to the Springfield Golf Course, and also to the parents who accompanied the students to the event. Thanks also to Shanelle in the office who was the behind-the-scenes organiser.

Our Chess Teams have done exceptionally well in the three tournaments that they have played over the last ten days. Students have played in Taupo, Hamilton and Tauranga. In the last tournament they played over in Tauranga, one of the teams came in second, by one point, against Year 7&8 teams. In Taupo, our team came first overall, and individuals came 1st, 2nd, 3rd. And in Hamilton our team came second overall. A number of our students, together with our team, have now qualified to compete in the Nationals later in the year. Claire Delos Santos has been placed top girl in all three of the tournaments. What fantastic results!

Thanks to Mr G for the awesome job you do coaching and encouraging our Chess players.

Lachlan Popata won the Principal for the Day raffle and he will be taking up his position on Friday. He has a rule that he is allowed to implement for the day and he has decided that children may wear mufti on Friday at no cost.

Lori Norton from Rotokawa School has been appointed as our new Learning Support Co-ordinator, starting at the beginning of Term 3.Lori has a passion and a lot of experience in the special needs area.

Melissa Elvidge from Otonga School has been appointed to start our new entrant class from June 27th. Melissa is a team leader at Otonga and is very well regarded as a teacher.

We look forward to having Melissa and Lori on our staff and I am sure you will make them feel very welcome.

I am in Dunedin this week at a NZ Catholic Primary Principals’ Exec meeting and won’t be back until next Wednesday.

We welcome you to our next whole School Mass on Thursday 23rd June at 9 am. We will be celebrating the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus that began beating in the womb of Mary still beats today in the glorified humanity of the Risen Christ. In the heart of the Lord, we experience the overwhelming mercy of God and His infinite desire to be in a relationship with us. One way is to talk with the Lord and share your heart with him in prayer.

Short prayers, known as aspirations, have always been a part of devotion to the Sacred Heart. They are ‘sweet sayings’ that we whisper to Jesus out of love for him. Some well-known ones are: ‘Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in thee.’ ‘Sacred Heart of Jesus, make my heart like yours.’ You can say these anytime or anywhere.

Holiday Steam Camp

During the upcoming holidays we are hosting a FREE Steam Camp at school. Year 5/6 students are invited to register and attend the two days.

We will explore technology, including drones, robotics and other technologies. Scan the QR code on the poster or click on this link to register. Numbers are limited, so get in quick.

If you are attending your child/childrens' sporting events and have some good photos to share, please send to sports@stmarysrotorua.school.nz with a notation about the occasion.
