TVUSD Reopening Community Update

A Message from Superintendent McClay
Dear Families,
As I shared last week, our county case rates are dropping at a rapid pace and making way for us to return to on-campus learning. On Tuesday, Riverside County's rate dropped to 28.8, and we see this as excellent news! Our new target in California for grades TK-5 is less than 25 cases per 100,000 residents. The middle school and high school target is less than 7 cases per 100,000. Both require remaining at that level for five consecutive days.
Based on the current trends and believing we will achieve the state-established targets soon, we are preparing to welcome students back to campuses on the following dates:
Grades TK-5 - Beginning March 15, 2021
Grades 6-12 - Beginning April 5, 2021
This is the news we have been hoping for since March 2020, when we were forced to close our schools and begin distance learning. TVUSD prides itself on fabulous educational experiences, and we want our TK-12 grade students to have the option to return to on-campus learning. That has been our goal these past eleven months, and we are thrilled to be getting so close. Of course, students will be able to remain in an online learning model if preferred.
Elementary Grades TK-5
For elementary students, we are working diligently to finalize classroom placements using the program selected by each family in the fall. We recognize that circumstances and preferences may have changed since parents made these selections. Therefore, via email on Monday, February 22, there will be an opportunity to adjust the learning model you selected for your elementary student.
The elementary timeline is as follows:
- Friday, 2/19 - Elementary families will receive site-specific information to help visually understand what the return to on-campus learning within the AM/PM model will look like.
- Monday, 2/22 - Elementary families will receive electronic communication to confirm their previously selected program. The communication will ask you to reconfirm or change your choice by Friday, 2/26.
- Monday, 3/1 through Wednesday, 3/3 - Sites will revise class lists as necessary and align staffing. The goal will be to make as few class assignment changes as possible.
- Thursday, 3/4 and Friday, 3/5 – Families will be notified of their students’ assignments.
- Thursday, 3/4 through Friday, 3/12 – Staff and families will have time to make daycare, drop-off/pick-up, and work schedule modifications as needed.
- Thursday, 3/11 and Friday, 3/12 - These will be asynchronous learning days, so teachers will have time to prepare classrooms.
Childcare for Elementary Students
Please know that staff has worked hard to ensure we will have programs available in regard to before and after school childcare with the AM/PM learning models. Detailed information about TVUSD childcare options for staff and families of elementary students will be provided prior to Monday, February 22.
Secondary Grades 6-12
Though the target to be allowed to re-open middle and high schools is a bit lower, we are confident that trending will continue to improve and have established April 5th as our secondary re-opening date. Secondary site-specific information will be distributed to all grades 6-12 families and staff within the next few weeks. We are thankful that the changes we made to the second-semester schedule align with preferences collected by our families in December, so we do not anticipate significant adjustments for grades 6-12. Again, more information and options regarding secondary will be shared within the next few weeks.
As always, we thank you for your continued patience. While it has undoubtedly been challenging for everyone, we are optimistic and hopeful that a return to in-person learning is within reach. The road ahead will continue to present obstacles, but we are confident in our safety protocols and very excited to welcome our students and staff back to in-person school!
I look forward to seeing you soon!
Warmly,
Jodi McClay, Ed.D.
