The February Wellness Challenge Continues!
We hope you're enjoying Centennial’s 6th Annual WOW February Wellness Challenge! As a reminder, the Challenge runs through Friday, March 4, 2022.
Now, more than ever, it is important to take care of ourselves so we can be at our best every day! To get this Challenge going, you can find wellness resources on this WOW February Challenge slide with details as follows:
How the February Challenge Works:
Each Monday, think of a small wellness goal for yourself that you will try to accomplish during the work week. You can choose a new wellness goal each week or just one for the month.
Track your wellness goal all week and work towards accomplishing your goal at least four (4) times per week.
Fill out your WOW Weekly Form every Friday throughout the month of February (through March 4th) so it can be entered into weekly building drawings!
Your building WOW Rep will also send encouraging emails and reminders.
Yes, There are Prizes!
Prizes include weights, yoga mats, inspirational note cards, water bottles, neck warmers, stress balls, etc. all provided through our Unfinished Learning Staff Wellness funds.
All weekly entries will be eligible for a districtwide drawing with eight chances to win a $50 HelloFresh gift card at the end of the challenge.
Participation Prize: The building/department with the highest participation percentage will be awarded the Wellest Award Trophy to be proudly displayed in your building as well as lunch provided for your whole staff from Panera.
Here's to a healthy & well February (and beyond)!

Centennial's Taylor Narayanan published in Nationally Recognized Journal
One of Centennial's Speech Pathologists, Taylor Narayanan, was recently published in the American Speech-Language-Pathology Association Journal Perspectives. She co-wrote the journal article "Self-Reported Confidence and Knowledge-Based Differences Between Multilingual and Monolingual Speech-Language Pathologists When Serving Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Populations".
The article focuses on factors associated with multilingual and monolingual speech-language pathologists' knowledge base and confidence levels when working with clients who are culturally and linguistically diverse.
To learn more about what inspired Taylor to study this topic and more, read the brief Q&A below!
What interested you most about this area of study?
When I began studying to become a speech-language pathologist (SLP) I noticed how white and linguistically homogeneous that the professors as well as the student body were. When applying for graduate school, I also noticed that there were very few bilingual certificate programs. I wondered if this was reflective in the greater body of speech-language pathology professionals around the country. Spoiler alert: it was. I was also curious about what factors support confidence in SLPs' ability to work with students/clients/patients who speak languages other than English.
What were some key learnings for you?
The main factors that most correlated with confidence included having experience training with multilingual SLPs or to become multilingual SLPs, as well as having experience working with multilingual students/clients/patients. In order to have access to training with multilingual SLPs, we need more multilingual SLPs! There is a greater systemic issue of a lack of representation in the field that needs to be remediated, so that speech-language pathology can include a wider variety of perspectives/approaches to the assessment/treatment of communication and swallowing disorders.
How does what you learned/study help you in your current role with students?
I learned through reading research articles that speaking even a small amount of the client's language can engender trust. I would encourage anyone who is working with students who speak a language other than English to try to learn a word or phrase in their language (or have that child or a family member teach it to you). This is a way that we can show students and families that we see them, that they are valued, and that they are welcome.
Congrats, Taylor, for this noteworthy accomplishment and for sharing your learning and insights with us!
