From Mr. Lucita
Let’s celebrate!!! What are we celebrating you might ask, well let me tell you. This was a historic weekend for the Johnson High School Band! This past Saturday we sent three students to the TMEA Area Auditions. These three students, Hannah Belden, Travis Miller, and Parker Taylor began this process by auditioning for the TMEA District Band in November. They placed high enough in those auditions to move up to the Region level, where they again placed high enough to advance to the Area level! Having three students advance to area is a huge reason to celebrate, however, we had one of those three students place high enough at area to earn a chair in the Texas All State Band!! Parker Taylor has earned a chair in an ensemble that places him in the top 2% of Texas High School Musicians. There were over 70,000 students across the state that began this process which culminates with the best of the best coming together to perform at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio in February! That is an awesome reason to celebrate!!
We have a few items to be aware of that will be here before you know it! Please make sure that you keep a close eye on the band calendar, it is your best source for events, rehearsals, and performances!
We are hosting a TCGC Winter Guard Contest at Johnson High School on February 29th. The JHS Band Booster’s have been sending out various invitations to either donate concession items or to volunteer to work during the event. This is a huge opportunity for our program, to not only raise funds as the host, but to also ensure that we are selected as a host for future events! We need everyone to help in some way! Please be on the look out for more emails and details and make sure you get involved in one of the ways offered!
There are 2020 Marching Season Percussion Camps starting soon. These are not required for our percussionists, however, they are highly encouraged as this is where students will have the opportunity to work on all aspects of marching band percussion. This fall we will have a drumline and a front ensemble and these camps are the first steps to ensure our success this fall. Again, please see the calendar for dates!
UIL Solo and Ensemble is February 1st at Hays High School. Those students that are performing at UIL will begin to rehearse with their Piano Accompanist starting Monday, January 20th. A detailed schedule will be emailed this week with dates and times for these rehearsals. The schedule is also posted throughout the bandhall. Every student will have two rehearsals of twenty minutes each with their accompanist. Students must have their solo prepared prior to the accompanist rehearsal. The time with the accompanist is to put the prepared solo and the prepared piano part together, not to attempt to learn the solo during that time. Parents, please help ensure that your student is prepared by having them perform their solo for you! Please do not forget also ensure that your student has paid their $25 accompanist fee prior to their first rehearsal. Those students not performing their solo at UIL do not have an accompanist which means you do not need to bring the $25. Those students will play their solo for one of the Johnson Directors. Every student in the Johnson Band will play a solo either at UIL or for a Director. These solos are crucial in helping each and every student improve as an individual musician!
Let’s have a great week as we continue on this journey of growth, develop and high standards for our Jaguar Band!
CALLING ALL CURRENT AND FUTURE JAGUAR BAND PARENTS!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! to host TCGC in February!
Calling all Jaguar Band Families! We need your help to host the Texas Color Guard Circuit competition in February! Color Guards from across the state will come to Johnson High School to compete in the Texas Color Guard Circuit competition.
Hosting a large competition requires a lot of help! The Jaguar Band directors have asked us for ADULT VOLUNTEERS to help set up on Friday, February 27th and help host the competition on Saturday, February 28th.
These volunteer opportunities are captured in the sign-up genius linked below. There are a lot of different types of opportunities for all to contribute! Sign up below and help us make a great first impression on our fellow Texas programs!
Please note that, because a schedule will not be finalized until closer to the event, TIMES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE!

We will also be requesting DONATIONS for concession stand items as the competition draws near. If you would like to get a jump on your donation, we are asking that families donate at least ONE CASE (12 count) of the following:
Flutes: Sprite, 12 oz.
Bb and Bass Clarinets: Dr. Pepper, 12 oz.
Saxophones (alto, tenor, and bass): Coke, 12 oz.
Brass (trumpet, french horn, euphonium, trombone, tuba): Chips (multi-pack, snack size)
Percussion/Double Reeds: Gatorade, 12 oz.
Color Guard: Candy (M&Ms, Snickers, Skittles, AirHeads, Trolli, etc)
*Once the semester begins, you can send your donation to the band hall with your student anytime before Friday, February 21st.
All profits, except for the bulk of ticket sales which go to TCGC and the merchandise sold by its exclusive vendor, will go to the Jaguar Band program. As you all know, it takes a lot of resources to support a growing and competitive program. Next year it is expected that our program will increase by 80 to 100 students!
Please help us maximize this fundraising opportunity so that the Jaguar Band’s 2nd year will be even more amazing than its 1st! Send in your donations and sign up!
Thanks in advance for the contribution of your time and donations!
Go Jags!
