Classroom Happenings at CPE
Kindergarten
In our bustling Kindergarten classrooms, little mathematicians are joyfully diving into the world of addition and subtraction, unraveling the mysteries of numbers with enthusiasm and curiosity.
But the adventures don't stop there! Our budding readers are taking their first steps into the magical realm of literacy. From sounding out words to unlocking the secrets of reading, each day brings new triumphs as our young scholars embark on their literary journey.
As we mark the upcoming 100th day of school, we can't help but celebrate the incredible growth and accomplishments of our vibrant students. A hundred days of laughter, learning, and friendship have paved the way for a future filled with endless possibilities.
Excitement is building as we prepare for a special field trip to the historic Old Davie School House in February. This hands-on experience promises to be a journey through time, where our kindergarteners will immerse themselves in the rich history that surrounds them.
Together, we're shaping bright futures and creating memories that will last a lifetime! 🌟📚✨
1st Grade
First grade had a magical time on our field trip on January 11th. The musical performance was awesome. During the past few months, we have been working hard to master the required standards. In ELA, students have been learning about short vowels, blends, consonant digraphs, narrative writing, expository writing, opinion writing, and story elements. In math, students are working to become experts in adding and subtracting within 20, counting by twos, fives, and tens, analyzing graphs, and working with fact families. We are looking forward to the second half of the year. The 100th day is approaching, and we can't wait to celebrate! What's coming up in our learning future? We will be learning words with a CVCe pattern, vowel digraphs and diphthongs. Reading comprehension will be a focus. In math, we will be beginning to add double digit numbers, measure with rulers, and discover geometry.
2nd Grade
Math: Read and write numbers from 0 to 1,000 using standard form, expanded form and word form. ** Don’t forget to have your child read for 20 minutes nightly so they can take an AR quiz at school the next day**
3rd Grade
Third grade is having an awesome year! As everyone knows, third grade is a mandatory retention year, so we spent the entire first semester ensuring students gained knowledge on the basic facts and improved on their reading skills through reading and math small groups and centers. We learned about where the food we love so much comes from and had the opportunity to engage with the animals who produce some of our everyday foods like eggs during our field trip to Miracle's Ranch. We are now going into the second semester which begins our "Crunch Time" period. The FAST PM3 test is in May, which is only a few months away. It is essential students are in school daily. We have targeted small groups in both reading and math to close the gap in students weakest area in their learning. As we work on instruction, we will also build students self-confidence. Let's go CPE Third Graders!!! Homework is essential to enforce learning and to give parents an understanding of how they can assist their child in their learning.
4th Grade
5th Grade
Hello fifth grade families! The students have been working hard to gain proficiency in all subject areas. The Friday i-Ready Treat Cart and our Science and Math competitions have created academic enthusiasm for all of the students.
March 19th, fifth grade students will travel to Broward College’s North Campus to Junior Achievement Biztown. This field trip is the culmination of the economics curriculum that will be taught during February and March. Parent volunteers are needed for this student lead experience. If you are interested in volunteering for this exciting field trip, please call the front office at (754) 323-5300 and leave a message for Ms. Potter in regard to this amazing opportunity. You may also CLICK HERE to begin the online BCPS Volunteer Application.
As part of our ongoing efforts to reward our students for demonstrating positive behavior and good character, we have scheduled our annual 5th grade SeaWorld field trip for May 30th. Your input is needed to finalize the details and the cost of the trip. Please take a moment to complete a survey that will let us know if your child will be able to attend the trip or not. The survey will be sent home soon with your child.
Nightly, please encourage your child to complete all homework, read for 20-30 minutes, study science notes and all basic math facts, and review helpful strategies taught. We look forward to a second semester of continued learning and growing!
ASD Special Program and Pre-K
In Pre-K with Ms. Frederic and Ms. Ashmeade, students improved their expressive communication skills. They are practicing how to greet others appropriately with polite words and gestures. The new theme is “Earth, Our Home”. Students participate in many different hands-on activities to learn vocabulary, math concepts, and early literacy skills.
Students in Ms. Williams’ Kindergarten class increased their ability to transition calmly. They interact more with peers and can work for longer periods of time than before. The students use music to learn new vocabulary and skills. They like writing with dry erase markers.
Ms. Carayag’s students sit and attend during whole group instruction with minimal prompting. They improved their behavior and follow class routines. The students clearly love the teacher and paraprofessionals. They also enjoy coming up to the board to answer questions.
Students in Ms. Ritchie’s class practice how to regulate their emotions and body using stretching exercises from Yogapalooza. They learned about the scientific method through experimenting with skittles and water. Students were very engaged in a lesson about “bossy r” when the teacher used movement and music to connect the phonics skill to writing.
In Ms. Ressler’s class, students are learning decimals and fractions. They also work on improving peer relationships and what it means to be a kind friend. Budding meteorologists, they analyze trends in the weather and use the data to create math problems to solve.
Specials
CPE Music ended 2023 brilliantly with a great winter concert! In 2024 we are diligently working towards programs for 3rd grade recorder players, 4th and 5th grade guitarists and a fantastic end-of-year concert. Stay tuned. 🎹🎷🎵🎸🎼🥁🎶
On the Spanish Corner, Kudos to the 1st and 2nd grade students who

BRAVO! Sra. River 🍎🏫🎒
P.E. classes at Croissant Park did an outstanding job raising money for The American Heart Association to help children with heart defects and disease. In October our students raised over $3,500 while exercising their own hearts during The Kids Heart Challenge. February will be a fun month as each grade level will be having their annual Field Days. Stay active! 🏈👟🥅⚽
Super Scientists
We have been getting Science ready since we’ve started the school year! The 4th and 5th grade students now have Science as a special included in their rotation and they have been able to conduct experiments and investigations related to the standards they are learning in class.
The 5th grade classes have been competing with one another once a month in the cafeteria, challenging one another’s Science vocabulary knowledge. As we enter a new marking period, our competition is going to start focusing on the content standards the students need to know for the end of the year.
We are looking forward to learning so much more about the world around us!
