Weekly Messaging from Design39Campus
Here What's Happening in the Month of October
- October 19: Great California Shakeout
- October 21: The D39C Collaborative's Fall Carnival
- October 23-27: Red Ribbon Week
- October 31: Halloween
Facilitators' Findings
At Design39Campus:
- We start with empathy
- We acknowledge one another as equals
- We are curious about each other
- We recognize that we need each other's help to become better listeners
- We slow down so we have time to think and reflect
- We remember that conversation is the natural way humans think together
- We expect it to be messy at times
These are natural tenets for our designers to use as they explore the world around them. They are sometimes difficult to abide by; however, during difficult times, these allow for civil discourse, even when having difficult conversations.
Let's come together as a community and support each other. Let us move from "I" to "We."
Coffee with the Design Facilitators
Thank you to those that attended our October 13th Coffee with the Design Facilitators. Thank you too to the Collaborative for ensuring that we were all caffeinated for our discussion. This week's topics included a presentation from our counseling team regarding the great work that they do, E bikes, solar updates, and much more.
We also hosted our first ELAC meeting of the year, led by D39C EL Coordinator, Tom Downs. If you are interested in serving on ELAC, please reach out to Tom Downs: tdowns@powayusd.com.
We will schedule another coffee for November.
D39C Board Presentation
Candid shot of 8th grade Design39Campus student, Safiya Warsi, speaking on Thursday night in front of the Poway Unified School District Board. She was selected by the 6/7/8 LEDs. She spoke of her experiences at D39C and how her educational experiences trump others in our district. If you see her around, please congratulate her on her fantastic Board presentation.
Bee Update
Meanwhile, the Showcase remains open for all students who want to eat in there during lunch, regardless of the bee situation.
What Makes You, You?
We are working on a design instillation for the Welcome Center and are seeking your active participation. When you have some time, would you mind clicking on the photo to left and adding a few characteristics that help comprise your identity.
Thank you. More to come.
LOST AND FOUND DONATION THIS WEEK
Lost and Found: Missing something? Water Bottle? A lunch box? A jacket? Two jackets? A tape deck, some Creedence tapes, a briefcase filled with some business papers, a rug that really tied the room together? Our lost and found carts are already filling up! The carts can be found outside the main gate before school and after school. Come, find yourself. The lost and found cart will be donated in a few weeks.
Lost and Found items will be donated on Wednesday, 10/18.

Equitable Spaces
Equity at Design39Campus
Design39Campus remains committed to addressing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. And we are proud of PUSD's commitment to this important work.
Last week, each of the Design Facilitators participated in Equity Walks at different school sites within PUSD. We participate in these walks through an equity lens, seeking to ensure every learner has access to opportunities that are aligned with their needs and to support their academic and social-emotional success. This practice also includes opportunities to incorporate student voice so that we have qualitative data from students about their learning experiences in PUSD. The outcome of the process is to drive improvements in teaching and learning.
Activities like these and many others help refine our abilities to serve our community as socially conscious leaders. Socially conscious leaders serve, inspire, and empower through their own examples. They explore their own intersecting identities, analyze their mindsets, and hone their skills. They seek to create equity-centered, asset-based systems by implementing and sustaining positive changes that benefit those they serve. They focus their efforts on creating equitable access with consistently strong outcomes for all students, paying special attention to the needs of historically marginalized populations.
Welcome Center Information
We Appreciate You!
A wholehearted THANK YOU from the Welcome Center for calling before 10:30am to report that your student is checking out that school day. This makes a world of difference in all of our lives. On our end, we can have the student ready and waiting upon your arrival; on your end, you probably won't be late that dentist appointment, orthodontic tune-up, or other necessary experience. Thank you for your continued support!
Advancement Via Individual Determination
AVID Tip of the Week
Our AVID tip of the week is about studying tips:
Some students make flashcards to study. Using questions, colored sketches, and examples, students can quiz themselves and peers about key terms, concepts, formulas, etc. One specific strategy to use would be the 3-pile system. After making flashcards, they'll test their knowledge, and, depending how they do, they will create 3 different piles: place the ones they 100% know in 1 pile, partially know in a 2nd pile, and completely don't know in a 3rd pile. Then, they'll repeat with piles 2 and 3 until they 100% know all the information. For more information, feel free to read this resource: LINK
Counseling Connections
D39C Hope Squad
We are excited to announce that we will be bringing the Hope Squad to Design39Campus. Hope Squads will be present on every campus throughout PUSD starting this year. Hope Squad is an evidence-based, peer-to-peer youth suicide prevention program. The goal of this program is to increase inclusion and connectedness in schools by teaching students how to provide friendship, encouragement, and support for students who may be bullied or feel isolated. For more information on the program, please visit the Hope Squad website.
At Design39Campus, we will offer an opportunity for students grades 5-8 to become a Hope Squad member and peer mentor. Students will be nominated by their peers or LEDs and selected by the Care Team. Hope Squad members care about others, demonstrate active listening skills and are trusted by their peers.
The Design39 Care Team has been trained as Hope Squad advisors to administer the most up-to-date mental health resources and training. Students in this program will not be asked to act as counselors, but rather will be trained to refer students to a trusted adult for help.
Students will participate in biweekly lessons with the Care Team during their lunchtime. In these lessons, Hope Squad members will be trained to take action when someone is struggling and look for warning signs in their peers. They will learn to show empathy, listen without judgment, and reduce stigma regarding help-seeking and mental illness.
Please contact the Care Team if you have any further questions about the Hope Squad

Lofty Ideas
This week during Loft visits, designers have been engaged in conversations around digital citizenship. They have identified ways to be responsible, respectful and safe while online. LEDs have or will be sharing family engagement activities around the topic your designer explored.

Redundant Repetitious Reiterating Repeated Recurrent Routine Reminders
Yes, You Have Seen This Before
D39C Halloween Costume Requirements: If your student chooses to dress up for Halloween, we ask that the following guidelines be observed:
No weapons. Knives, guns, or batons are not permitted at school. If your child does have these items, they will be removed and returned at the end of the day
No costumes that depict violence, alcohol, or drugs
No masks, face coverings, or face paint. Students' faces must be visible throughout the school day
No costumes that could be offensive. i.e., a stereotype of someone’s culture, gender, heritage, or religion
We also ask that you save your scary costumes for the evening, sending your child in attire that will not “scare or spook” our young designers. Students wearing questionable costumes will be asked to change into appropriate school attire.
Would you like to become a part of the Design39Campus Team? Do you like to be outside and work with children? If so, we are looking for a few quality Motion Managers to help support our designers during body breaks and lunch during the middle of the day. Possible times are 10:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. or 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. If interested, please apply through Poway Unified School District at the this link.
Attendance: To report your child's absence or early checkout, please email the attendance office at d39cattendance@powayusd.com before 10:00 am on the day of the absence. Please include your child's name, homeroom/grade, dates of absence, and reason for absence. We kindly ask that you avoid checking out your student during the lunch period from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Please refer to the attendance section of our Design39Campus website for protocols regarding reporting student absences and requesting early release for your student.'
California Education Code 48205 states that a student may be excused legally from school when the absence is due to:
- Personal illness or injury
- Quarantine under the direction of a county or city health office
- Medical, dental, or chiropractic services
- Attendance at funeral services for a member of the immediate family
- Justifiable personal reasons, including, but not limited to, an appearance in court, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at religious retreats, attendance at an employment conference, when the pupil's absence has been requested in writing by the parent and approved by the principal or designated representative
- For the purpose of serving as a member of a precinct board for an election
- Exclusion for failure to present evidence of immunization
- Exclusion from school because student is either the carrier of a contagious disease or not immunized for a contagious disease
Drop Off/Pick Up Reminders: Please remind your designers that they should be walking their bikes, e-bikes, scooters, skateboards, hoverboards, horses, segways, pogo-sticks, unicorns, and unicycles when on D39C campus. Also, while we love puppers and always want to pet them when we see them, please refrain from bringing them on campus during drop off and pick up. Thank you.
Communication with your Designer: If there is a need to communicate with your child during the school day, please send a message to your child’s LED or the Welcome Center. Please refrain from communicating with them directly through text messages or phone calls as it disrupts their learning.
Personal Items: For equity reasons, we are asking that students keep their personal playground equipment at home or in their backpack. Our wonderful Collaborative supplies us with enough funding to ensure that there is enough equipment during recess and lunch.
The Design39Campus Collaborative
The D39C Collaborative is a 100% volunteer-run foundation designed to be responsive to the needs of students, parents, and learning experience designers of Design39Campus. Once a year, the D39C Collaborative secures funding to expand and enhance the educational experience of every student attending Design39Campus.
This year’s 39 days of giving campaign was the school’s most successful yet. Thank you so much to all our generous families.
