PTO News
Our last meeting to "plan the playground" was a success! We did some strategic planning for sensory pathways, updated hopscotches, and 4 square boxes. Sensory pathways work wonderfully to help dysregulated students return to a regulated state so that they are able to work on problem solving and finding solutions to things they encounter at school. Parents are excited to dive into the actual work as soon as the weather improves reliably. PTO is planning a PES Talent Show for our students to participate in this spring, more information to follow on that! Next meeting is March 11th 6 to 7 pm.
If you are interested in volunteering in PTO projects that support student learning please reach out or just show up at our next meeting! We want everyone to be involved!
OBOB School Wide Competition and Final Battle!
Did you know....in one week 31 students from 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will be competing in our schoolwide Oregon Battle of the Books competition?! Please read the details below to marvel at what these scholars have done and will do.
Students have been reading the 16 selected books since September, though some started last May! They have memorized book titles and author names (including proper pronunciations). They have attended weekly practices and formed teams of 3-5 players. On Wednesday, these teams will compete in a series of 15 minute battles answering comprehension questions about the books. They will accrue points in pool-play, then battle in ranked qualifiers, and semi-finals to end the day.
Then, on Thursday, February 29th in the library at 12:45pm we will hold the FINAL BATTLE with the last two teams. All parents are invited to come and watch, but we ask that younger siblings stay home as we worry about keeping the battle quiet with younger children present. This last battle will determine which team will represent PES at Regionals on March 9th. Will it be the Legendary Lions? The Barbie Changos? The Skibbedy Rizzlers? Or one of the other 5 amazing teams?! We'll find out on leap day!
Family Math Night featuring iReady's Plory and Snarg!
Phoenix Talent Schools will be hosting a Family Math Night at Phoenix High School this Tuesday, Feb. 27, from 5:30-7:00pm. This event will be for grades K-8. We will have carnival-style games presented by OHES, PES, TES and TMS staff with prizes and raffle tickets at each booth! There will also be an iReady presentation for families to learn how to access iReady for their student's success, and a chance to meet the iReady mascots, Plory and Snarg.
Pizza will be served for dinner. We hope to see you all there!
March Harvest of the Month - MICROGREENS
Each month, Rogue Valley Farm to School partners with local farms to bring tastings of our Harvest of the Month. Last month, your student had the opportunity to sample pickled beets and beet brownies! You can make your own beet brownies at home, just check out our recipe (en espaƱol). This month, we are having fun with MICROGREENS! Your student will get to try some samples of locally-grown microgreens at the cafeteria tasting table on Thursday, March 14th. Then, they get to vote on whether they tried it, liked it or loved it! Check this fun interactive sheet (spanish version) for recipes, videos, nutritional info, kids activities - including how to grow your own microgreens at home, and information about the local farm where the microgreens were grown! Phoenix Elementary is part of the Rogue Valley Farm to School Digging Deeper School partnership. To learn more about the partnership and Rogue Valley Farm to School click here.
