JANUARY 24, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
Hello Northpoint Families!
We continue to see some wonderful examples of competency-based learning every day around Northpoint. This week, I want to share an example from Mrs. West’s kindergarten class. They recently focused on the career and life competency of Collaboration to create a mural of the four seasons on Maple Hill Farm, the setting of a book they are reading. Students discussed what they learned about the changes that occur with the animals and weather throughout a year on the farm. They collected details from the text and then demonstrated their learning by working together on their mural.
Last week, we had our latest pulse check. Thank you to those of you who took the time to provide us with your insights. We received praise, appreciation, feedback and questions that included:
Praise for meaningful communication with families
Praise for teachers’ daily instructional lessons
Feedback about gifted programming
Questions about school events
Multi-age learning has been a topic mentioned a few times each month (both positive and constructive feedback). Here are a few key highlights for our families to know related to multi-age:
We are conducting a program analysis of how multi-age learning is working since being implemented at Northpoint.
The analysis includes academic and social-emotional data, student focus groups and staff interviews.
The outcomes of the analysis will be important input for us as we design what we want learning to look like next school year and beyond.
We will communicate any changes well in advance of the end of the year.
As always, please reach out if you would like to have a conversation around this or any topic.
Comments about school events included questions on how parents can get more involved as well as how we might have more school events. You can help us hit both of these by being an active member of our PTO. During these meetings, we talk about various events, ways to engage with our families more and also have special guests (typically staff members) to present on topics of interest to the group. Our next PTO meeting is February 5 at 6:30 p.m. I hope to see a lot of you there!
Another way parents can support the school and district is by getting involved with Panthers for a Purpose. The Week of Giving is February 18 - 24, 2024 with a big party February 24, 2024. The Fund-a-Dream project this year is the Weekend Pack Program that provides food to students who need it over the weekend. Learn more on the Panthers for a Purpose event page.
Enjoy the rest of the week and hopefully these warmer temps are here to stay!!

EMT certification leads to fire station internship
It only took one class during junior year through Opportunities in Emergency Care to steer Anas Sumrin’s future direction. Last year, he became an Emergency Medical Technician – a certification he earned at Spring Lake Park High School. Now, as a senior, Anas is interning at the Fridley Fire Department where he takes a primary role in patient care on medical calls. All of his training was made possible through the Opportunities in Emergency Care (OEC) program. Students can take courses to become certified as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Nursing Assistant, Firefighter and more.
In a visit to the Fridley Fire Department, Anas shares more about what led to this dream internship at the fire department, how it’s going so far and what’s to come in the future.
Get Ready to Laugh! “Live on 65” Comedy, Thursday, February 8
We all need a laugh, and C. Willi Myles is sure to make that happen at the next Live on 65 performance on Thursday, February 8 at 7 p.m. in the Spring Lake Park High School Fine Arts Center. After surviving his childhood growing up with nine sisters and one brother in Alabama, Willi moved to Minnesota to attend college and play football. With his stories about growing up in the south and acclimating to the cold of Minnesota, Willi tells extremely funny non-offensive stories and jokes and gives a unique spin to life's everyday challenges. Will is referred to as "America's Everyday Comedian.” Don’t miss the laughs. Get your tickets today.
