State Testing for 3, 4 & 5th Grades
This spring, students in grades 3 – 8 and 11 in the Beaverton School District and throughout Oregon will be taking the Oregon State Assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Our fifth graders will also test in Science.
In addition to content standards, these assessments are designed to measure critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. The test results provide you, our schools, our district, and the state with information about how well we prepare our students for their next steps, including college and career readiness.
Hiteon School will give Oregon State Assessments starting April 25 through May 20. The tests are not timed, so your child can take as long as they need to demonstrate what they know fully and can do.
We know that a moment and time test cannot possibly tell us everything about your child’s academic progress. However, the results act as a snapshot of your child’s strengths and areas for improvement and can be used to ensure they are getting the support they need. Additionally, the tests help Beaverton School District distribute resources and support student learning equitably. When fewer students take the test, we are left with an incomplete and inaccurate picture of how our students are performing. This limits our ability to address issues, better serve students, and continue to improve our educational system.
This letter includes a form that allows you to opt your child out of testing for the 2021-2022 school year. If you have opted your child out in the past, you must do it each school year. Please click on the attached link for the Oregon State Assessments Opt-Out Form for English Language Arts and Mathematics. Please click on the attached link for the 5th Grade Exemption Form For Science. You must fill out an opt-out form for Language Arts/Mathematics and a separate one for 5th Grade Science. Should you wish to opt your child out, please submit the form to your child’s classroom teacher by Monday, April 4. You can learn more about the Oregon State Assessment by going to the district website attached Oregon State Assessment General Information if you have more questions.
At Hiteon, we are deeply committed to ensuring each and every student in our schools has the support they need to achieve at high levels and graduate prepared for their next steps. Our ultimate goal is to make sure that all students are set up to be successful from grade to grade, and that will remain the focus of our district throughout the rest of the school year.
Thank you for your support!
Headphones for State Testing 3, 4 & 5 Grade Students
Each student that is participating will need a pair of headphones for their testing sessions. If your student doesn't already have a functioning pair of overhead headphones or earbuds at school, please send some with them at your earliest convenience.
Please avoid sending Bluetooth headphones of any kind as they do not connect well to student Chromebooks. If you are unable to send your student with headphones, let their classroom teacher know as soon as possible. We will have a few extra on hand if need be.

BSD Math Placement Testing for 5th Grade Families
About 9 out of 10 BSD students will be enrolled in “Math 6/7” for math next year.
If you would like your student evaluated to determine whether “Math 7/8" or “Alg/Geo/Stats 1” would be appropriate instead, please see the BSD Math Placement Testing site for important dates and information.

Harry Potter's Hogwarts Castle at Hiteon
We have an awesome built of Harry Potter's Hogwarts Castle in the Hiteon Library. It has added some great charm to our Harry Potter section of the library!
It was built by Richard Greene , parent of Lydia in Mrs. Logan's class. Mr. Greene said it was harder than he thought and took tons of hours.
Students line up to try and get a glimpse of the awesome structure.
Thanks to the Greene family for the wonderful donation.

Student Survey Opens April 1st thru June 9th
Each year the District surveys students, staff, and parents to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District's Strategic Plan.
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the survey are anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups. No individual data will be reported.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available from your child's school and is posted at
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/accountability/research-reports
After reviewing the survey, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify the Hiteon office at 503-356-2140.
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/accountability/research-reports
- Después de revisar la encuesta, si usted no quiere que su hijo participe, por favor notifique la oficina de Hiteon 503-356-2140.

Safe Routes to School for April
Walking and Rolling is Good for the Earth!
April is the month we celebrate Earth Day and one way you can help our planet and combat climate change is to replace car trips with active ones! 2 miles of driving = 1.6 lbs of carbon emissions.
Think about local car trips that your family takes often. Maybe it is a trip to the park or a friend’s house. Map your route and try walking or biking instead. We often think places are farther than they seem. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your location and be amazed at what your body can do for you!
