Shark Tales Weekly Update
Sheiko Elementary: December 8, 2023
PRINCIPAL UPDATE
Happy Friday, Sheiko Sharks!
We have had another great week of learning here at Sheiko Elementary! As I am at the car line, in the lunchroom, in the hallways, and in classrooms, I wish you could see all that I see. I am filled with gratitude. We have the most amazing staff that love our kids and pour all of themselves into teaching them each and every day. We are also so thankful to you as our parents for all of your support.
We have two "Big Announcements" this week. The first announcement is to be sure to check your child's progress report this week. Please see the information below if you are not sure how to do this. You can also call the main office to receive additional support.
The second announcement is to be sure to sign in your child if they are dropped off at school at 9:10 or after. The car line closes at 9:08, so if there is not an adult to greet them, please pull around to the front. You can park your car, walk them in, and sign them in. Students cannot sign themselves in. We appreciate your support in this matter.
Again, thank you for all of your support! We wish you a restful, relaxing weekend!

HOW TO CHECK PROGRESS REPORTS
Progress reports can now be viewed on Power School! You will see a mark in citizenship, math, and reading. A key element of our District Strategic Plan includes that core belief that education is a shared responsibility and that positive community experiences and relationships are key to student success.
You can view your child's progress report on a computer or on your mobile device: Video & Slideshow to help parents view progress reports

*Students that have PE on Tuesday next week will also have it on Wednesday.*
Please help your child remember to bring shoes for PE as the weather is changing and students are starting to wear boots. I appreciate it!
MUSIC- MRS. VIRTA
This week in music, we utilized basketballs to practice a routine from the “Nutcracker Ballet” and to review rhythm note values. We also had a little time to show off our basketball tricks! In addition, we have been studying careers in music. We learned about how audio engineers prepare music for Spotify, ITunes and vinyl records. We watched how vinyl records are made -it’s a pretty neat process!

CALLING ALL "CASINO NIGHT" VOLUNTEERS!
Hello West Bloomfield Educators and Stakeholders! It is that time of year and we hope that you will join us at the West Bloomfield Educational Foundation’s Annual Casino Night! The WBEF is proud to support our Teachers, Students and classrooms by raising FUNd$ and donating back every fall. We could not do this without your help and participation, so once again, we want to thank you for your commitment, time and energy to making this year’s event a success! It is certainly going to be another exciting evening for our schools & our community coming together to raise FUNd$ for our children’s education!
Please contact Kristen Murray or Jennifer Hill by January 12, 2024 to volunteer. If you have any questions, or know someone interested in volunteering, please feel free to contact Jen at #248-672-2658.

Let the “Gaming” begin!
SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING
Calm Down Corner:
All of us experience big emotions. The question is, how do we handle those big emotions? Many children need guidance or a place to go to regulate and navigate through such strong feelings. In our classroom, we have a calm down corner with a Mood Meter as well as calming tools such as a glitter bottle, breathing balls, putty, and cards with yoga poses! It is important to know that this is not a time-out. Instead it’s a place to work through emotions and calm how they’re feeling.
CAPTURING KIDS' HEARTS SURVEY
Did you know that we are a Capturing Kids' Hearts Showcase School? We NEED you to fill out this survey by Dec. 15th. We always want to learn and grow to make Sheiko the best it can be! Thank you in advance!

OK2SAY
Dear Parent or Guardian:
Our school will be hosting a presentation on OK2SAY – Michigan’s student safety program for students in 4th & 5th grade on Thursday December 14th.
The program is designed to inform students how they can help make their school and community safer by reporting dangerous and concerning behaviors to a trusted adult or OK2SAY.
Students in 4th – 5th grade learn about the OK2SAY student safety program, including how the tipline works. Students are encouraged to always talk to a trusted adult when they see or hear about something that makes them feel worried or unsafe. Students also learn essential tips and strategies for being safe online and off. The presentation emphasizes the difference between "tattling" and "reporting" and helps distinguish between rude, mean, and bullying behavior. Students will learn effective responses to cyberbullying and recognize techniques used by internet predators, so they are prepared to protect themselves from online harm. Please take a moment to review the videos featured in the presentation.
Additional information and resources are available at OK2SAY(ok2say.com).
If you do NOT want your child to participate, we do have opt out forms in the front office.
Sincerely,
Blaine McDowell
IXL INFORMATION
We will be using IXL at school to supplement instruction and review skills. It is a great resource to use at home too:
Helping Your Child Logging In At Home
IXL is designed to help your child learn at their own pace. The program is adaptive and will adjust based on your child’s demonstrated understanding of the material. If students are working on their Skill Plan, they should select tasks in order from the top. All of your child’s results will be saved, so you can monitor their progress anytime by clicking on Analytics. Although IXL is not required, it may be something you
would like them to do 2-3 times per week at home.
Students might need your help to log in at home on a device. Here are some tips:
● When students are logging in from home on a computer, they need to use
https://www.ixl.com/signin/wbloomfieldsd and then their school google email/password.
Happy Learning!
FRIENDLY REMINDERS
Winter is upon us and students should be dressed for outdoor recess. Students are outside for recess unless there is heavy rain, thunderstorms/lightning or the 'feels like' temperature is below 10* Fahrenheit.
Please label everything. It will help eliminate the need for a Lost & Found table.
We are asking that students leave their smart watches at home. They have proven to be a huge distraction to teaching and learning. Students may have phones (but totally not necessary!) as long as they are powered down and in their backpacks. Students will have one reminder to put them away. Otherwise, these items will be turned into the office for parent pick up if they are out.Thank you for your support in this matter!
SICK POLICY INFORMATION
To protect all children from communicable illnesses, students infected with certain diseases are not allowed to come to school while they are contagious. Students should be symptom-free for 24 hours before returning to school. Please call our Safeline (248-865-6372) if your child will be absent from school. We also have a masking station at the front of the building in which students are welcome to help themselves. For more information regarding the sick policy, please see the attached document.
