In 6th grade, our Lions are working on ratios in Math, learning about world religions in Social Studies, studying energy transfer and waves in Science, and practicing their research skills with a unit on Space in ELA.

In 7th grade, our Lions are studying energy transfer in Science, proportional relationships and percentages in Math, research skills in ELA, and the Industrial Revolution in Social Studies.

In 8th grade, our Lions are studying the Dred Scott case and other Supreme Court cases in Social Studies, learning about the American Revolution with their research unit in ELA, studying the hydrosphere in Science, and working with linear relationships in Math.

6th grade mathematicians continued working with unit rates and percentages this week. They talked about pace and speed. Pace tells how much time it takes the object to travel a certain distance. Speed tells how much distance the object travels in a certain amount of time.

Two skateboarders start a race at the same time. Skateboarder A travels at a steady rate of 15 feet per second. Skateboarder B travels at a steady rate of 22 feet per second. After 4 minutes, how much farther will Skateboarder B have traveled? Explain your reasoning.

7th grade mathematicians practiced using fractions and percentages in real-world applications like taxes and tips.

Here are the prices of some items and the amount of sales tax charged on each in Nevada. What is the sales tax rate in Nevada? Write an expression for the amount of sales tax charged, in dollars, on an item that costs dollars.

8th grade mathematicians talked about slope and vertical intercept this week. Horizontal lines in the coordinate plane represent situations where the y value doesn’t change at all while the x value changes. Vertical lines represent situations where the x value doesn’t change at all while the y value changes. Use what you know and write an equation for each line in the graph in the image.

STEM students have built ski ramps using Lego engineering kits and are now putting them through their paces with a series of tests. Do you have Legos at home? See if you complete a similar challenge like the one on this website!

This week our Lions learned practiced CPR, worked on music for the winter concert, worked on their debates, built Lego ski ramps, made models of the earth, designed and built catapults, and much more! Ask your student all about what they are doing in their Encore classes!

We are pleased to offer in person afterschool tutoring in ELA, Math, and 8th Grade Science Monday-Friday beginning in 2023. The tutoring is provided by Swann teachers and is free for students who have registered. Transportation will not be provided.
