The Power of Reading with Your Child
Reading to/with your children every night is a wonderful and beneficial habit that can contribute to their cognitive, emotional and social development. Here are some suggestions to make the reading experience enjoyable and meaningful:
- Select books that are suitable for your child's age and consider their interests.
- Set up a comfortable space for reading.
- Make reading a part of your nightly routine and consider setting a regular time.
- Ask questions about the story, characters and illustrations. Encourage your child to share their thoughts and predictions.
- Let your younger child take an active role by turning pages, pointing to pictures or even reading simple words if they can.
- For older children, pick up a second copy of the book at the library. Answer book club questions with your child. Share your favorite moments in each chapter.
- Connect the stories to your child's experiences or discuss how the book events relate to their own lives
- Don't rush through the reading.
- Enjoy this bonding time with your child.

Kindness Week
January 22-26 is Kindness Week in WCSD. With the support of our Student Leadership, we will be coordinating various activities for students in support of the spirit of kindness. I look forward to our students joining together to support and celebrate our efforts to ensure all students are treated with kindness and respect.
PTA is a GREAT way to support our school!
The Murwood PTA plays a vital role in enhancing the overall educational experience for our children, and we are currently seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join the PTA Board for the 24-25 school year. Why join the PTA Board?
Make a Difference: Your ideas and efforts will directly contribute to creating a positive and supportive learning environment for all students.

Return to Murwood Survey
Believe it or not it is already time to start planning our enrollment for the 202-25 school year!! This process begins with our TK & Kindergarten pre-registration (the priority window closes on 1/29/24). If your child is currently enrolled in TK or K you DO NOT need to register them for next year. They will automatically roll up to the next grade level as do our 1st thru 5th graders.
Our next step is to determine who will be returning for the 2024-25 school year. Your assistance in helping us with this is greatly appreciated. Please take a moment to complete our RETURN TO MURWOOD SURVEY. Even if you are unsure of your plans for next year, please submit a response. If your plans change at any time before the start of the new school year, please email the office.
As always, thank you for your support.

Future Squire Families…
As the calendar now says 2024, it will only be a short few months until you and your child will potentially join the Walnut Creek Intermediate School community. Later in the spring you will be receiving information regarding your child’s transition to WCI. In the meantime, the WCI PTA wanted to invite you to an event that may interest you. Please consider attending, “How to Understand A Middle Schooler” featuring our keynote speaker, Keith Hawkins. Attendance at this event is optional.
Who is Keith Hawkins?
Keith, is a returning, dynamic public speaker who captivated WCI students last January by discussing his philosophy: “Give What You Need.” His delivery and engagement with students is truly inspiring with a relatable demeanor, magnetic presence, and a million-dollar smile!
This year we are thrilled to welcome Keith Hawkins back to WCI! The WCI PTA is sponsoring this event and wanted to include our new 2024 incoming families.
The “How to Understand Your Middle Schooler” keynote speech highlights will include:
How to help students feel a sense of belonging and voice at school
Ways to build a strong, social-emotional tool box for a middle schooler so that academics and other aspects of a teen/preteen’s life can benefit
The importance of supporting and listening to your preteen/teen, celebrating their victories, recognizing their efforts and improvements, & focusing on growth rather than accomplishments
Personal anecdotes, practical tips, and valuable insight to help make the middle school experience a positive one
If you think you (and your grade 5-8 student is invited as well) would enjoy sharing some time laughing, pondering, participating, and reflecting on the challenges and intricacies of middle school, mark your calendars for Keith Hawkins’ “How to Understand a Middle Schooler” speech! It’s one you won’t want to miss! Please RSVP by January 25th to reserve your spot!
Sincerely,
Chrissy Morss
