SchoolMax Family Portal
We are almost halfway through Quarter 1. Can you believe it? Parents are encouraged to login regularly to monitor their scholar’s progress. Additionally, be sure to update your contact information in the Family Portal. This is the information that the school will use to send emails, texts, and robo-calls to keep you informed. If you encounter any issues accessing or updating your Family Portal please visit:
Free and Reduced Meal Applications
All parents are encouraged to apply for Free or Reduced Meal Services (FARMS). This information impacts school funding which equals $$dollars$$ in our classrooms.
Even if parents don't think they qualify, they are encouraged to apply at MySchoolApps.com. Online applications are processed within 24-48 hours.
Students who are not eligible for free or reduced-priced meals must pay for their meals. See Meal Prices. Parents and guardians can easily monitor and add funds to student meal accounts using MySchoolBucks.
Math Corner
Emphasizing the M in CMIT!
In math class, scholars are expected to show their work and not just provide their answers, engage in discourse and writing to math tasks. This process assist scholars when it they are prompted to explaining their reasoning or modeling. Reasoning and Modeling tasks are in the curriculum as well as on the MCAP Math assessment. To support at home, have your scholar explain how they solved one of their problems (basic computation or word problem).
Definition:
1) Mathematical Reasoning- is an evolving process of conjecturing, generalizing, investigating why, and developing and evaluating arguments.
-2) Modeling- is the process of choosing and using appropriate mathematics to analyze real-world situations, to understand them better, and to improve decisions.
*If your scholar could benefit from multiplication or division practice, this is a good website to utilize https://webmathminute.com/.

Hispanic Heritage Month
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

Quarter 1 Book Club (Mr. McSparron, RELA)
Greetings Students and Parents,
By now you should have selected your Q1 Book Club Novel (Hoot, Dogsong, Wishtree, or Call of the Wild) and begun reading. It is the responsibility of the student to acquire their novel of choice. These books may be sourced anywhere books can be borrowed or bought, including the internet. Remember that on Wednesday, October 11th we will have our first book club discussion group. The expectation is that you have read about half of the book, and answered the questions on the Fishbowl Discussion Worksheet you received last Friday. Extras are available upon request.
In addition, the Book Club Book Report template is now live on Google Classroom. These slides should be completed for the entire book, and are due on 10/27. By that time you should have finished reading the book and completed the template, following the directions on each slide.

Ms. Sutton’s Role at CMIT North Middle School
Hello everyone. My name is Kaci Sutton. I am the Mental Health Clinician here. This is my second school year at CMIT North Middle School. I am a Licensed Social Worker (LMSW). I received my Master’s in Social Work from Howard University. To those parents who attended Howard University YOU KNOW!
What ignited my passion for Social Work is my long-life drive to want to help children. I have experience working with children with special needs, low-income, and the LGBTQ+ community. My primary goal is to create a safe space for each student in individual and group therapy. My goal is also to establish a rapport with each student that needs my guidance. I am not here to judge the students. For the most part, I am here to actively listen and if necessary, share advice and oftentimes provide different strategies and coping skills to overcome the issues they are experiencing. I want each student at CMIT North Middle School to know that their voice matters and that they deserve to be heard.
I have several roles as a Mental Health Clinician in the school setting. Daily, I provide therapeutic services, which are individual and/or group therapy. I attend IEP meetings. I attend 504 and SIT meetings. I facilitate group mediations. I aid administrators in conducting restorative chats with students for conflict-resolutions. I also speak to parents who have concerns about their child/children that attend this school. I work with administration to figure out how to best support our students. I engage in classroom observation. I also run groups, such as “Friendship Circle,” “Girls Group,” "Boys Group," etc. if I believe that it will benefit the children socially and emotionally.
As many students know I have a school locker with the words, “Ms. Sutton’s Dropbox” right by the Nurse’s office. There are referral slips that the students fill out and put in my locker if they need my services. There are times when students leave me notes in my locker or email me when they would like to see me which works too. I ask the students to give me 3-5 days to pull them from their class for an individual or group therapy session. My main focus right now is helping the 6th graders make the difficult transition from elementary school to middle school. I only try to pull students from Art and/or Enrichment so students do not miss important content in class.
I meet with every student once then I give them a parent consent form to get signed by a parent/guardian. I cannot meet with students if I do not have parent permission. I also tell students that everything we talk about is confidential unless they are going to harm themselves or others or if I need to submit a Child Protective Services (CPS) report.
I look forward to a great 2023-2024 school year. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at pg_kaci.sutton@pgcps.org or ksutton@cmitacademy.org.
