Dear Talley Families,
It has been an absolute JOY to be in the library this semester! All day long we have kids coming in to learn, collaborate, share stories, and create. I say this all of the time, but I have the BEST job at Talley Street! Now that we are at the halfway point in the school year, I am sharing some important updates below. Please feel free to contact me with any questions!
Have a restful break and don't forget to read!

Winter Break Reading Challenge
Email me a picture of your child reading over the break for them to be featured on our library bulletin board and earn a house point!
Need books? Linked below are instructions on how to access Sora on a device at home!
Library Volunteers Needed
We can always use extra hands shelving books! Below is a signup genius for the Spring semester. No prior experience needed - we'll teach you everything you need to know! Thank you in advance for your generosity with your time!
Family Literacy Night
SAVE THE DATE for Talley's Family Literacy Night on Thursday, May 2!
We are so excited to host our first ever family literacy night to celebrate the end of the school year and kick off our summer reading program! This event will feature an author visit, poetry slam, and more. Stay tuned for more details coming in the spring!
A Reimagined Book Fair - Coming May 2024
The most exciting change in the library this year is our inaugural TRUE Book Fair coming to Talley in May 2024!
You may have noticed that we did not host an in-house book fair this fall. In the Talley Library, we firmly believe in the right to information access for ALL learners, and that family finances should never dictate a student's access to books in the library. Because of this, we are excited to host our first ever TRUE Book Fair! At this reimagined book fair (first started by school librarian Julie Stivers in North Carolina), all Talley students will be able to choose two high interest, high quality, inclusive titles to take home to build their home libraries free of cost.
Thanks to DEF for their support with this program!
Please feel free to contact me with questions. Stay tuned for communications on volunteer opportunities at this event coming in the spring!
Little Shop Spirit Night
In an effort to fundraise for our TRUE book fair and all of our library's other impactful programs, we hosted our first Little Shop spirit night this year! It was a super successful event where we raised $1,131.96. This is what Dave, Little Shop's co-owner, had to say about our event:
"By our standards, this was an enormously successful event. You all did a great job at getting people out on a day when the weather wasn't as cooperative as we might have hoped. I don't recall a single in-shop bookfair that brought in anywhere nearthis amount."
Thank you so much for your support! We are hoping to host another fundraising event with Brave + Kind in the spring. Stay tuned for details!
Black History Month Program
STEM Lab Needs
We are in need of some items for the STEM lab that you may have hanging around your house! Please send in any of the following either before or after the Holiday Break:

- Shoeboxes (We use both the tops and bottoms)
These items will help greatly in projects for all grade levels when we return in. January. We also have some items that you may not have readily available. If you want to help out our lab, check out our Amazon Wish List: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3NINPT45ZP9ZV?ref_=wl_share

Girls on the Run - Participant Registration
Girls on the Run is so much more than running. Our tested curriculum blends physical activity with skill development that enables girls to adapt to whatever comes their way. Girls on the Run understands the important connection between physical activity and overall emotional health. Trained volunteer coaches guide girls through research-based lessons which creatively integrate movement in a fun and motivating way. By signing your girl up for Girls on the Run, you are giving her the opportunity to connect, grow and learn how to navigate difficult situations.
The spring season registration lottery is open through Tuesday, January 16:
Our meeting team’s days and times are: Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday from 2:30-4:00 beginning the week of February 19. The program is for girls in 3rd through 5th grade. The end of season 5k will be the weekend of April 27.
The Girls on the Run program fee starts at $0 and is on a sliding scale based on household income so that every child who wants to participate can.
