Pirates Post

Good evening and welcome back from Spring Break Pirates. This is your Principal Mickey Drew with the weekly update.

As we start the final push this week there are many things happening in our school and community that you need to be aware of:

Tuesday - PCHS will host a mock crash event for all Juniors and Seniors. Students will be called down to the gym for the start of the program. This event is being coordinated with community emergency responders, the Sheriff's Department, local fire departments, and other community agencies to help our students understand the perils of drinking and driving.

Also on Tuesday we will host a College Fair in our media center. Students will be called down to the Fair to meet with college representatives and to explore options for post-secondary education upon their graduation from PCHS. A huge thank you to Ms. Morgan Gray, our college coordinator, for organizing this event for our students.

Golf will play away on Tuesday while Softball will host Greenbrier Christian Academy at 5:00 PM.

Wednesday - PreACT will be administered to all 10 grade students at PCHS during the school day. Our golf and track teams will take the sports pictures on this day as well. Women's Soccer will host Cape Hatteras at 5:00 PM and Baseball will host Manteo at 6:00 PM.

Thursday - There will be a community event at the Perquimans County Public Library. The "Expressing Ourselves Through Poetry" event will start at 5:30 PM and students are encouraged to attend and share poetry that represents them and their experiences. Golf will play at Manteo and Baseball will play at First Flight at 6:00 PM.

Friday - Soccer will host Northeastern at 5:00 PM. Our AIG field trip for 9th and 10th grade students will also be on this day.

Saturday - Prom will be held on the football field. Students must have purchased a ticket and had any guest that is not a student at PCHS approved prior to attending the prom.

As we look toward the end of the school year it is always a busy time. There are some dates and events that you may want to be aware:

May 2-6 is Teacher Appreciation Week. This is an opportunity to take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate all that our teachers do. The staff at PCHS is amazing. I encourage you to take some time to express your appreciation to your teachers for the impact they have made in your education and life.

May 6 - Senior Job Fair and 11th/12th grade AIG trip.

May 12 - PCHS Spring Band Concert

May 31 - Athletic Awards Banquet

June 1 - Baccalaureate

June 6-10 - Final Exams

June 8 - Graduation Practice at 1:30 PM on the football field. This is mandatory for all Seniors so please plan accordingly.

June 10 - Graduation at 7:30 PM on the football field.

Hopefully each of you has taken the opportunity over the past week to rest, relax and recharge. We have 28 instructional days left in the school year and now is the time to put a clear focus on completing work and preparing for exams in each of your classes. The attention and effort you give over the next 28 days can make a tremendous impact on your overall success this semester. Let's get to work and finish the semester well.

- Unified Champion & Special Olympics> On April 14, Special Olympics athletes and Unified Champion partners participated in engaging activities which included tug-of-war, stations, dancing and the finale was a kickball game.

-YHSC> YHSC members present the "Harms of Vaping" to 7th & 8th grade students at PCMS (see below).

About the School

The Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding was founded in 1919 and is the preeminent apprenticeship program in the nation. The school offers four-, five-, and eight-year apprenticeships in nineteen shipbuilding disciplines and eight advanced programs of study.

The Apprentice School is accredited by the Commission of the Council on Occupational Education and registered with the Virginia Apprenticeship Council and offers apprentices the opportunity to earn college credit, receive competitive pay and benefits, and learn a trade.

Craft Instructors

Over 100 years ago, the school introduced the role of craft instructor to help apprentices develop the core leadership principles and craftsmanship necessary for a successful shipbuilding career. Today, almost 70 craft instructors ensure apprentices receive the training and the types of jobs they need to develop targeted skill sets, document the apprentices’ skills development and provide them with regular and consistent evaluations.

Academic Instructors

The Apprentice School’s academic instructors deliver the courses in business, communications, drafting, history, mathematics, physics, psychology, ship construction, and shipbuilding technology. Academic instructors create classroom experiences to prepare apprentices for work in their shipbuilding trades, to continue their education in one of the school’s advanced programs and to further their education through Newport News Shipbuilding’s Educational Assistance Program.

Because of the unique nature of apprenticeship, The Apprentice School and its leadership are structured within Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries.
